Exact match vs. brand name domains

I am trying to start a long term business strategy(ton of information website with ads or a few promoting product). I try to start with micro niche website. I know micro niche website is not 100% great, but I have a low investment and barely anything to pay for marketing( stupid bills). It the cheapest way to start(I think)

Micro niche website is not the problem; it is this brand name vs exact domain name thing. I hear that brand names are the way to go if you are looking for a long term business, but the problem I keep reading b logs or forum, and some says that exact domain still works. I don't get it!

Also people say brand name can cause trademark or legal problems, but can I just make my own brand name.
#brand name #exact domain name #frustrated #micro niche website

    Rageki,

I think you're barking up the wrong tree. I doubt seriously that the EMD / brand issue is what's holding you back. Some of the worst domain names I've seen have been very profitable.

EMDs are great if you have your own product. In fact, some people re-name their products because the domains they want are already taken. That being said, EMDs are not critical for success and profitability. SEO benefit is not what it was awhile back and may actually be nothing if you are in a competitive niche.

Branding your site takes time. It doesn't happen quickly and doesn't make a lot of difference unless there is large competition for what you're selling. Branding gives you name recognition and differentiation but really . . . what good is that if you are the only one selling a unique product?

EMDs vs Branding is typically not the difference in success or failure for a new site or even a site that has been around for awhile but hasn't gained traction with its audience.

That's why I'm saying that you're barking up the wrong tree. Your site and/or approach to marketing is not successful for other reasons. And since we don't know about your site, we don't know how to help just yet.

    Good on you,

    Steve

Here is a website that has an exact match domain Coffee Tables With Storage

It a information website with just ads, no product promotion.

If that website use a brand name for it domain instead of filling it domain with keywords, would it matter?

Heres my advice on the matter.

First of all, it's good that you are looking for something long term. Understanding that as your goal will reflect your choices.

If you want to go for long term game, you MUST start with a brandable domain name. The only caveat to that is if you have a MASSIVE budget (which you dont) and can buy a super premium EMD.

If you are low on cash. Make your priority this:

    - Invest in a good, high quality, responsive theme.
    - Get a good logo designed.

Then spend the rest of your time creating, LOADS of high quality content. And by loads i mean, write your ass off until you cant write anymore. Build comrephensive sites that people love. Set up authorship, verify with webmaster tools, set up social profiles and update them.

Once you are at 100+ pages of content, start link building. Start with HQ directories, guest posts. Be very NON AGGRESSIVE and don't do anything too shady (If you want to do that, do it on another site, not a long term site like this).

Trust me, hard work pays off. I've used this strategy over the last year to build up 1000+ page sites and they are ranking on their own now with very few links and outrnaking people who have been spamming.

The aggressive, emd, spam links approach will work over a short span (1 month to 1 year) and CAN make good money (I have used this approach extensively) but long term, we both know, building beautiful sites that users love is the way to go.

Good luck, do things right :-)

        3. Although i wish i had just one. Its much easier to build something massive up, than trying to build 3 up and maintain 3. $1000 a month would be doable if you put in the hard work. It might not be quick, but its doable within a year.

The best way to start your business and succeed is to create content first, don't listen to people who talking about copy past content in their sites and bombard their visitors with ads everywhere in their pages, what I suggest is:
1/ create good articles first, may be 10 to 20 good and unique articles, and promote your affiliate links in your articles, don't put more than 5 links per pages, this is not good for SEO and ranking.
2/ Add some banner ads in in your sidebars for example, let's say 2 banners per page, this will let visitors reading your articles and view your ads at the same time,
Thus, you find yourself mixing the two ways, promote products and put ads, both are good with moderation, don't use exessive ads, nor exessive links.
For Brand names, you should build your own Brand, nobody will let you use his Brand protected by low "watermark", what if you make a great site and then lose it by low? so chose your unique Brand, keep it short and simple, then promote your brand within your social networks, Twitter, Google Plus and everywhere, and you can advertise it later.
I hope I helped. Good Luck

Exact domains work and they will always work, simply because they are relevant to whatever the person is searching for.

HOWEVER, it doesn't mean that a brand domain can't outrank an exact match domain.

Getting the domain right is only the first step, but more important is the fact what you do with the rest of your website.

      Rageki,

I doubt that it would matter at all. What's on the site and the value that the site brings to the viewer that's shopping for a coffee table is what's important, more so than the domain name. Both EMDs and branded names can be ranked highly if you're worried about that aspect.

      This ^^^ exactly.

Exact match is always good, sure, but people have also put the whole thing up on a pedestal. You can actually rank and populate your site just as well even without an EMD, so what's there to lose by having the extra benefit of a cool, catchy name to go along?

Also, judging by the amount of concern and thought you're putting into your question, you're implying that you plan to rely primarily on Google. Google will always be fine and dandy, but try to have it only as a backup source of traffic, as opposed to your primary source. If you can rank a few keywords, then more power to ya. And if not....well, there are lots more ways to still get traffic.
