Question From Aging Warrior

Hey all

I have been down in the Internet Marketing trenches for a long time but have never actually built my own website. Not really anyway.

I am very proficient with blogger as that is what I have used since I first started online 8+ years ago and so have gotten my head around all of it's intricacies but blogger is really designed to be used as a blog and not a website.

Blogger is also hard to customize and have working the way you want if you want something unique, plus there is limited support if any for customized models.

All the other websites I have owned I have had built for me.

I have decided I would like to try my hand at building my own WordPress based website.

What is the best resource for a newbie like me?

I want something that will take me by the hand from starting and downloading WP, all the way up to uploading it to a host, customizing it and then eventually going live with it.

I have seen a ton of videos and read a ton of tutorials but it really seems like most of them are missing something.

Can someone recommend a great proven resource paid or free that can help me?

Cheers.

Just jump right in. It's really quite simple. All hosting accounts include automatic WP installation with a few clicks. Then you choose a theme, do some basic configuration and start adding content.

Yeah but what I need Is kinda not something you can get from a theme or any specific plug in.

What are you trying to build? I bet you can do it with WP.

For now just install WP with ANY theme and teach yourself how it works. You can change your theme later.

Yeah I know you can do it with WP thats why I want to use it, but Im saying that I dont think that just by jumping in I can do it all as fast as I want to. No doubt ill work it out, but I dont have time.

Id rather a simple yet in depth guide.

      Thanks

WordPress really is fairly simple. It's just a matter of getting your hands dirty. You will experience frustration, but it's no different than anything else that's worth doing in that regard.

Then you'll probably have to move beyond WordPress. Even if you come up with a plugin that does what you want, WordPress doesn't do anything optimally. So then you end up needing a more powerful server. Drupal is more optimal. Joomla is in-between the two.

Personally, I would look for a raw PHP script and just use that if you don't know PHP.

UHH I cant really say here, but I can say that its no theme that I have seen or any type of plug n play plug in. I have seen the J Q scripts that I want used on other sites.

Wordpress is really not that difficult, and I'm sure you can find some excellent online training with the help of Google.

Wordpress.org is also very active, and support questions are answered pretty fast.

As for plugins to use, again, just google, best wordpress plugins, or essential wordpress plugins.

Sink your teeth into a site, make mistakes, pull your hair out a little, but, it's the only way, just do it... you'll have it off in no time...

I remember I used to have to hard code a site, it's so easy these days.

  • Installing wordpress plugins are amazingly easy Once I got into it. I highly suggest that you consider looking into going on a free plugins and themes site, and then downloading the info on how they install it. This should help get you started on the right track.

      Hi guys

      Thanks for all the replies.

It has motivated me to just jump in and make mistakes. After all only I can build exactly what I want.

My question is, If I cant find the theme I am looking for paid or free, what then? Do I simply download the basic WP and begin customizing myself? Or do I get a them that most closely resembles the one that I want and go from there?

I have heard that some already customized themes are extremely hard to tweak further and with limited support.

This depends on how well you get to know WP and what you want.
If you have a strong design sense to what you want - then go for some of the flexible WP sites that are practically fully customizable such as Atahualpa (free in Depository). There are others, but I'm sure other warriors can name them.

Or you can look at something like this - 7 Highly Customizable WordPress Theme Frameworks and Website Builders to see if any of these connect to your idea.

          Thanks Professor that's really great.

I got my hosting and domain set-up this morning so will begin working on it tonight.

Just for others reading this that have seen me around here for a while and that are wondering why it's taken me so long to dig my finger's into the dirt so to speak and finally build my own website..

I have built sites before using blogger which I am proficient at, but blogger really restricts what you can do.

The other sites I have had built have pretty much all be custom coded. I have been lucky in sense because I have disposable income and so the bigger websites I have made I have always paid for developers to put together for me as well as designers, logo people etc.

I was never completely satisfied with what I had originally envisioned and so like with anything if I wanted something else the developer would start the meter ... you know how that goes.

So my decision has mainly been because I now have some free time on my hands and I really want to try building something myself from my own mind and learn how to use WordPress from a development point of view (I have used it as a blog platform previously) also I'm pretty technical, already know a little HTML and I'm a fast learner so it all just kind of makes sense and plus now days with the way technology is and how easy it is to implement and use, why not?

          Thanks guys.

I'm sure you will see me begging for help in the design and development forums very soon, lol

This is a good question. I have my preferences but everyone is different. As far as what I use? I use the old version of Optimize press. There is a learning curve but the flexibility is off the hook.

What is difficult about WP themes when starting out is that as you buy other themes the UI dahboard navigation are each different. I'd recommend finding one WP theme provider that you like. THis way if you ever decide to build another website there will be no learning curve as you'll already be able to navigate that theme dashboard quickly.

So, I know I didnt solve your problem but hopefully I added some insight.

    CHeers,

    Duncan

Thesis Theme is considered to be the best WP theme and most powerful. You have to pay $197 dollars for it but it is well worth the price. It looks professional, uploads fast and is set up to be SEO friendly. I jumped into Thesis Theme without any coding background or any IM background and have been doing okay since. It is pretty easy to use, but I have had some help setting up the site with a professional coder. There have been some bumps in the road, just trying to get the design right. Am still in the design phase, too. Anyway, my experience with Thesis WP Theme has been positive and just wanted to add my two cents.
