Is somebody doing this?

First: This is only an idea and I do not have a technical solution how to do this yet.

I got the idea when checking my logfiles. Some visitors have certain websites shown as referrer. When I click on the referrer url I arrive at a website, but on this website there is no link to my site. How can this url have referred my site without a link?

Could this be some blackhat method to generate traffic. Visit as many sites as possible and when people check their logfiles they will visit your site. One will probably have to visit very much sites to get a decent amount of traffic that way. So this has to be automized. And than there is the question how to let your site appear as referrer without having a link (thousands of links) on your site?

But can it be done? Since all people with websites checking their logfiles are webmasters, a squeeze page with an interesting offer for webmasters could make a profit.

      The links are only temporary.

  • You could make the links invisible. Same colour as the background. Paste in a large number, click on them, erase them and start with the next load. But this would mean you have to do it by hand. May be some people know a better and quicker way. But I think as long as you do it by hand you are not violating any laws. Same as with email spam.

Yes that is an black method people use to make some "quick traffic", however don't worry, it's harmless and they don't do much money because the traffic is untarget.
