Free Images: Understanding Creative Commons Licenses

You should also be aware that the license:
  • Applies Worldwide
  • Lasts for the life of the Copyright
  • Is not revocable (cannot change)
  • So do not fear that the owner will change the rules on you after you use the image, or that you are using it in the wrong country or way.
However, you still need to be sure you are using the right license.
An excellent, quick and understandable read of image licensing.

Several years back I was introduced to Getty Images. It cost me several thousands of dollars. I was a paid member of a site who provided themes. When I used one, I was soon approached by a Getty agent. I appealed to the site owner to no avail.

    So:
I never use images that I did not create or know their original source.
I read and keep all documentation concerning their licensing.
If I question an image, I go to Getty's website to see if it is listed.

    Bottom line:
If in doubt - DO NOT USE the image, video, content, etc.

So thanks for your link. It will assist me in avoiding the Getty regime.

Thanks. I was just thinking a few days ago that I needed to get a more accurate understanding of the use of images. I have always "assumed" I was compliant since I mostly use purchased images but it is something we all need to pay more attention to I think.

Thanks. I always try to see the Creative Commons terms for the particular license to make sure I don't misuse it.

    Just keep in mind.....

    1. You have no idea if the person offering it as CC has the rights to do so.

    2. If the actual owner does offer it as CC but then claims they never did, can you prove otherwise?

This has been very helpful to me.

Please note that search.creativecommons.org is not a search engine, but rather offers convenient access to search services provided by other independent organizations.

      Definitely a legitimate concern.

A quick screenshot of the item with license should do the trick in most cases.
