Is it possible to make money with a website without specific theme?

My question is, is it possible to make money with a website that doesn't focus on specific themes, products, or goal?

I mean the website that provides random general information, and those information can goes from "how to cook a delicious dishes" to "how to get a girlfriends" in a same website?

Does this kind of website works with adsense? or I should focus on specific theme or information for the website? The reason why I am asking this because I had a old website that the domain name was kinda broad in term and it doesn't make any sense even if I tried to focus on specific theme or products.

You guys opinion are very important to me because it will decide whether I should abandon the website and start a fresh or don't give up on the old website which probably has around 50++ articles and 2 or 3 years old.

I would say yes. Is it a blog? Like you said random posts about anything? Once you have a good following of people that enjoy your posts and have trust in you I don't se why you couldn't make money with it with well placed affiliate products. Like you said a post on dating. Why couldn't you drop an affiliate link in that post to a dating product from clickbank.

You probably won't kill it and you would have to bee really cool about it. You don't want to push products down their throats every post and you don't want to look to salesgirl but I could see it working. I would not go overboard with a bunch of banners and crap like that.

I may even give it a go. A personal blog with random posts about whatever I want to talk about, get them to join a newsletter maybe have a few affiliate products on this site then when the time is right very very slowly start steering them towards your money sites.

  • If there is a way to pull it off, your content better be smoking. Websites that do stuff like this tend to have really good articles with a lot of personality - often humor.

I somewhat agree with Superior here, there is always a way to make it but without a purpose your advertisement would just be floating out there and once a person gets to your website they would not have had a purpose for going there and hence probably will not buy anything.
The best way would be to promote something specific on your website, then once you get your customer to the website you can broaden their variety with all the extra's the website has to offer. Otherwise you better be ready to spend a lot of money on advertisement.

Dammed phone!!! I read about this once and I was not involved in marketing at the time. A young guy started a blog with no intention of making money. All he wanted to do was voice his views on politics and political news. Over a couple of years he developed a huge following and some news agency or someone with money came in and gave him 13 mil for the site. He was not even a marketer!

It is generally best to pick a specific niche and write about that topic to attract readers interested in that subject. Random posts with no unique theme run the risk of not attracting any reader. "How to lists" on a variety of subject might work, but think that a specific niche will be more successful and profitable in the long run.

Would also recommend that you choose a niche that you are passionate about so that you will avoid burnout and like the work you are doing. Surely, there are people that have the same interests and passions that you have.

If you look at the longevity of sites like ehow.com, you have to admit that it is possible to make money on a wide-ranging website.

Do you have the wherewithal to create such a massive resource?

This is the key question, I think.

Of course it's possible to make money from a website without a specific niche, but that doesn't necessarily make it a sensible thing for most people to try, when you think about what they could be trying instead (e.g. making money from a website with a specific niche ).

Very good point. As the old saying goes, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should". Niche has proven itself time and again to work better in today's IM climate. We dabble in broad ventures like the one below but it's not our mainstay. The niches have served us best to date.

It should be possible if you can turn it into a site with user generated content.

There is numerous websites that use multi niche approach and monetize that with adsense.
    One good example is ehow.com.

Thanks for everyone's posts. Now I have mixed feelings on this. I am completely aware that it would takes a lot of efforts to make it works like ehow, but at least I know it is possible. Now I have one more option for me to consider for.

I guess you didn't understand the comparison with eHow. You cannot expect to achieve their success.

You seem to like the idea of a general website about life problems in general terms, but the online users prefer specific websites about every problem.

It's going to take a lot more than just effort. It's going to take some serious coin. Ehow hires hundreds of writers and scours search results for questions. This is not some back bedroom website, it's a serious investment.

You would be further disadvantaged because ehow already has a position in the marketplace. You would have the twin challenges of creating a massive resource and knocking the current 800 pound gorilla from its perch.

Given your original question, lotsa luck...

As everyone has already pointed out, it definitely is possible.
The problem with doing so is that it does take a lot more effort than it would if you were targeting a specific niche.

I've actually tried this out myself. There was a time that I wanted to be able to publish any content without focusing on a specific niche. Squidoo and Hubpages were available for this but I wanted to earn 100% from my content rather than a portion of it, so I set up a generic blog and started targeting long tail keywords for each article. In the long run though, it was just so much easier focusing on a specific niche.

I've been working on my own e-commerce website for a long time. What I've learned in the three plus years is find a specific idea. Try to narrow down what you want to do or sell and specialize in that. Also, never consider something your final idea. There are always ways to improve. My focus for my website went from selling everything to one specific idea, and that idea has been revised so many times I've lost count. Stay focused and try to stay specific.

How much traffic are you getting organically right now? If you are getting lots of traffic then your website must be ranking good with the search engines.

If it's not, then you would be better off starting out with a new blog or site and a 'specific' niche that you are well versed in already.

Also write for the love of money instead of just making money.

Your main goal is to get an audience and a consistent following who contribute or comment on the articles. The tricky part is to know what product to offer to your audience. You could use Adsense and Amazon products tailored to the topic of the article. Beware that this approach is going to be less profitable, with a diverse audience, than if you concentrated on just one large niche.

Assuming that I am going for niche articles website, it is appropriate for me to converts the existed random/general website that I had now into a niched website; by removing other contents and informations?

And yes, the web domain name remains broad as ever.

Think about the effort that you'd take in making money out of this broad niche. And time. You have to do a lot to make relatively little money. This is opposed to targeting a specific niche, and having an audience whom you can talk to, feel and sell to.

What are your options? Keep it, and continue posting several articles. But have another website (maybe 3) with targeted audience and specific niche.

With the diminished importance of exact match domains, keeping a broad domain name is fine.

Pretty general question that I don't think will solve your problem... I would suggest finding a specific niche to work in so that you can find people who have already been successful in that niche and you can model your business after that success. Sounds a bit counter intuitive but there's a reason that the health, wealth, and relationship marketplaces are so crowded.

I understand that specific niche works much better when it comes to earning/selling...but why can't a random posts website work well with adsense?

Am I supposed to believe that specific niche with adsense going to trumps random posts with adsense by miles?

I always under the impression that people lurks and read articles from random websites, and click the ads if they saw something interesting or wish to divert the attention to other sites. Isn't this is how adsense works? or adsense only apply to the buyers, and that is why specific niche is better?

With Adsense, it's all about the numbers. The more people, the more clicks, the more money. Chasing organic traffic is much easier for a site that revolves around a more focused theme.

If you can find a way to cost-effectively drive enough traffic to a random-article site to make a living, have at it.

hodgepodge websites don't work with adsense unless you have tons of traffic and even then it's not worth your time, not in my opinion
