Quick Survey for Kindle Publishers (And Other Authors)

Hello Guys....

Just trying to get a barometer of where Kindle stands in the Warrior Forum. This is simply for curiosity's sake. I have certain publishing goals that I am focusing on, regardless of the responses of this survey.

I have been publishing to Kindle for several months now. It has given me the stable and growing income that I have wanted. I had tried just about everything else, with varying but unpredictable results. Different strokes for different folks because Kindle seems to be something that works for me.

Quick Survey:

1. How long have your been publishing your books?
2. How many books do you have published on Kindle?
3. Where else do you have your books published?
4. What percentage are fiction/nonfiction?
5. What's your average length of book (by word count or page count)?
6. How much to you generate in total each month from your books? (I know that many of you don't like to give specifics - I don't either - so just say how many figures you are making each month - ie. "I make in the mid-3 figures a month.

Here's my answers:

1. How long have your been publishing your books? Several months.
2. How many books do you have published on Kindle? 21 titles.
3. Where else do you have your books published? Nowhere yet. Looking into Smashwords and CreateSPace right now.
4. What percentage are fiction/nonfiction? 75% fiction/25% nonfiction.
5. What's your average length of book (by word count or page count)? 20,000 words for nonfictions. 10,000 to 50,000 words for fiction.
6. How much to you generate in total each month from your books? (I know that many of you don't like to give specifics - I don't either - so just say how many figures you are making each month - ie. "I make in the mid-3 figures a month. I generate in the mid-3 figures.

There's no hidden intensions with this post. It's just for fun.

Best wishes,

KateD

    1. 2.5 years
    2. 300+
    3. Only Amazon
    5. 75% non fiction 25% fiction (I've found fiction to be MUCH more difficult to outsource successfully)
    6. 25-30k
    6. I have a partner and I think we each earn in the high 4 figures just from kindle book sales. It can become difficult to tell at times since Amazon loves to send like 10 different payments each month.

I kind of like getting all "checks" from Amazon, Amazon.uk, Amazon.ca, etc.

Great, Since you also involved in fiction I hope you (or someone) here clear my doubt.... I know there is a minimum 3000 words restriction is for non-ebook fiction ebooks. But I am not sure of fiction ebooks. What about micro-fictions & flash fictions which are probably less than 1000 words. Is it possible to publish these 1k words micro/flash fictions in amazon kindle store?

You'll want to have at least 2,500 words of content in anything you publish with KDP, so flash fiction is best published in anthologies.

Out of curiosity, do you guys use ghost writers to write your material or write it yourself? I appreciate this may sound like a rhetorical question in this forum but I am curious about the fiction ebooks...

      Not bad, Mr. Good.

Any tips or pointers to help those of us on the road behind you?

Certainly, learn how to make the covers yourself.

It sounds simple, but that's been the key to my success. I downloaded gimp for free and I bought a subscription of stock images. I practiced how to make covers over and over until it was to a high standard, and that allows me to stand out from the crowd. It's much easier than you'd think as well, because I had no experience when I first started doing it. It allows me to have total control over my books, and it gives me a massive boost over my competitors. (not to mention that you learn a valuable skill that you can then monetize as well)

There is a direct correlation between sales and the quality of your cover. Recently, I started writing under a new pen name. I put up 4 books (3000 words at 99c each) and each book has been averaging 4-7 (only including .com) sales a day. I then put them into a collection and the collection has been doing similar numbers. Those 4 stories took me less than a day and will make around 500-700 dollars (probably more as sales have been increasing) this month. I have 16 books (12 are 99c, 3 are compilations and one is a stand alone book) and they are all doing these numbers.

I haven't promoted these books, and I only made the author's page a couple of days ago. I don't have a twitter, facebook or even a blog. Also, they are pretty generic (ie, the sales are not attributed to being part of a taboo genre/niche). I've never asked for reviews on any of my books, although they do tend to get pretty good reviews as I make the word count abundantly clear to the reader.

If you don't want to invest in stock images then just download gimp and use images from google to get some practice (only use them for practice, never try to sell them). You can watch tutorials on youtube to help you along as well if you want. Then when you feel you are ready you can sign up for a stock image subscription and start selling!

Besides, with your mad skills you can try to sell covers on fiverr, enter contests on 99 designs, or (like I've been doing) set up your own website and sell premium covers for a handsome price.

It is definitely become more difficult as more competition floods Kindle with their published work. My very first Kindle title sold in excess of 400+ in its month. I was under the incorrect impression that all titles will sell as easily. They don't.

That first book dropped down in sales significantly. It's been out for several months, and is averaging between 40-80 sales a month now.

That being said, I'm in it for the long haul. I know that as long as I keep adding new Kindle titles to my portfolio (and start using other sales channels like CreateSpace and Smashwords), then I will eventually increase my royalties to the levels that I want.

P.S. In regards to Good, I do create my own covers. I paid for my very first one (on Fiverr), but I was not impressed in the slightest. So I got some images from RF123.com (I paid for them) and have made evry once since. And once you get the hang of it, it really isn't that hard. I have done over 20 Kindle covers so far for my own Kindle titles (and am doing one now for a client - this isn't part of my typical ghostwriting service - just a very persistent client who wanted me to take care of everything - content, formatting, cover image). The customer is always right.

Well it's good to know that you make your own Kate, and I haven't seen any of yours so I can't be sure, but I'm talking about having them up to a very very high standard. For example, whenever I write a military themed book I will alter the person on the cover so that he/she is wearing a military uniform. I add dog tags, change eye color/hair color and skin tone. Often he/she will be wearing denim so I change that to look like military combat pants.

Or, for example, I made a cover for a customer recently in the YA niche and I made it look as though the man on the cover was transforming into a werewolf. Gave him sharp teeth, black claws, some fur on one part of his body and glowing blue eyes.

Another customer wanted an angel book cover so I gave the man on the cover wings.

Just a few examples, but this really does help. It's important that the cover is not only of a high standard, but relevant to the story. It's okay to go to these stock image websites and look for a picture of someone that already has wings/ is transforming/ has a military uniform, but don't forget that everyone else can do the same, and the only way to be truly unique is by learning how to edit a cover image to suit the narrative of your story.
