My spam has jumped through the roof

19 replies
The spam to my blog has increased massively.

Aug = 50
Sep = 200
Oct = 500

All caught by Askimet but why the increase. Is it a result of being more available in search engines etc?

If I ever want to buy Ugg boots or NFL shirts I know where to go :-)

Thanks

    Likely just an influx in people using one of the many comment spammer programs mixed with the better availability of your blog.

      I don't mind them trying and actually, if its because my blog is more available, isn't that kinda good?

        I have 3 blogs and the spam message really irritates me!
        We have to adjust with it as you have told getting into search engine.

    What ElusiveEnd said.

    A sudden spike is definitely because of an increase in visibility, so congrats.

    The only solution is to stop the comments those article which are older then 14 days, when you stop the comments no spam will come.

    Only open comment those blog which you are regularly logging in and doing activities then you can clean your spams easily

    I just stop all the comment on my mini websites, cause I want people to take action rather wasting time on commenting

    I hope this helps

    You need to change your spam defences once in a while. Plug in writers get lazy and stop updating their anti-spam plugins.

    Craigslist is really getting bad for spam. I have several personal items listed and I get spam bombed wanting my email address and phone number. It's terrible! craigslist needs to step up their game to combat it.

    lol thats a lot spam comments.

    I remember when I first got an email from a comment made to my blog.

    I approved it because it was complimenting my content... so fail.

    So is there anyway to block these spams coming to our blog to begin with?

      I use the Askimet plug in for Wordpress, it has stopped every one of the spam and still allowed a genuine comment, held for me to moderate.. im happy with that and its just a 1 click button to delete all the spam

        Since you spelled it wrong twice maybe it wasn't a typo?

        Akismet = https://akismet.com/

        I have never actually found that an increase in spam commenting attempts correlated to an increase in the targeted traffic I wanted. Spammers are not my audience but they find us anyway. I think spammers and other black hat operators share with each other so that is why you see the exponential increase.

        I don't have commenting options at all anymore on any of my sites. I just have never found it worth it for all the time it takes.

    I am having the same issue, and with spammers signing up on my site. It sucks, trying to find a solution.

    Ive gotten a big increase lately too... seems some morons cant get it through their skulls that this lazy backlinking strategy doesn't work anymore.

    Ive been getting like 20 a day from 1 website. I looked them up and saw they are actually a real brick-and-mortor business in florida. Which to me means that they hired some SEO wannabe to "increase their web presence" and all they did was buy a $5 scrapebox blast.

    im about to make some SEO guy really unhappy when I call this company and explain how their website is about to be deindexed because of junk links.

    Here's a question?..how do you decide what comments in your blogs are spam or genuine.

      90% of them time I can tell from the name of the author. If their name is "nfl jerseys for sale" or whatever keyword they are trying to spam it's easy enough to mark them off as spam.
      For other comments where spammers are using a legitimate name, just a quick glance over the first sentence will tell you.
      If it says something like:
      "I visited and bookmarked your site..." Most of those are spam.
      OR
      "My cousin referred me to your blog and I must say..." Most starting with that is spam.
      OR
      "Resources like the one you mentioned here will be very useful to me! I will post a link to this page on my blog..." Mostly spam
      OR
      "I do not even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was great. I do not know who you are but definitely youre going to a famous blogger if you arent already..." Spam

      And then there is the hundreds of comments that have a comment that does not even relate to your article.

    I thought as much, I'll keep that in mind..I have the same problem with email, uninvited emails like
    "Ä friend of mine sent this over to me, thought you would like it"

    Anything I havn't subscribed to, with similar heading I tend to look of as spam, in which case gets deleted.

      I LOVE Akismet! I have also seen an increase in spam attempts on the blog I recently resurrected but I personally credit it to increased visibility with the increase in action I've caused. Akismet got them all

      But I've also noticed something new, to me. I'm sure it isn't really new online in the blogging world but it was a first for me... thousands of log-in attempts! In one day...

      I removed the visible log-in link but I know that anyone who understands Wordpress can find it easily enough.

      Now I have to pay more attention to passwords... again
