When did internet marketing "click" for you?

Hey guys,

Been thinking about this --

It took me about 2.5 years before I started getting a real idea of how to make money online.

That's when I finally broke the $1,000/month goal, and really started to bring in the profit.

When did internet marketing "click" for you?

It looks like it hasn't clicked for anyone.

When I realized that making money online was the same as making money anywhere.

It all starts with a sale. And a sale happens when you provide value to another person.

So, instead of trying to make money, I started trying to add more value to people's lives.

I started giving away more content, advice, and anything else I felt would help someone else FIRST... before I made a dime in return.

That's when it all clicked for me, and that was about 12 years ago. Since that time, I've never gone under six figures a year income-wise.

Before that "ah ha" moment, I was making $100 a month, if that.

I was lucky in that I was a voracious reader, and read a quote by T. Harv Eker that said...

"Those who make the most money provide the most value".

A few days later, i noticed another quote that said "He who profits most, serves best."

Well, I really started thinking about it and realized that for the first year online, my focus was on making money... and NOT helping people.

When I turned it around, and put my focus on helping as many others as possible... things will naturally start to happen for you.

    1. you'll start to focus your marketing on the other person... and showing them how you can help them solve problems.

    2. in order to help more people, you'll realize that you need all the traffic you can buy that returns a positive ROI

    3. you'll realize that helping people continuously is the key to making money. That means upsells, backends, repeat sales... when you can continue to add value, people will continue to buy.

I promise, if you're focused on making money... you're looking through the wrong end of the telescope.

Turn it around and start to think of as many ways as you can to help others, and to add value to as many people as possible.

Create your "platform" that helps you do this... and your money-making worries will be over, I can tell you from experience.

People think IM requires some magic formula, and that isn't always the case. How would you make money offline? With common sense and knowing your target audience.

Pretty simple, really. Once I stuck to a single plan and saw it through. Far too many people have "method ADD" and simply jump from idea to idea. Sit down, come up with a solid plan, and put it into action. If you're seeing results, even if they're fairly small, think of what you can do to increase them. Turn that first dollar into ten, then twenty, then 50, etc.

And don't jump to the next idea unless you are willing to invest real time into it.

Yes this was really my main problem for the first couple years -- was always jumping from idea to idea... its really unhealthy for your business growth.

This is actually another huge one.

I call this the "expectation setter"!

I used to think with one clever idea I would become a millionaire... haha.

I agree with giving more value... I have spent years building business and to be honest IM has kicked my ass a few times.

The big key I think is to stop thinking of it as IM its just marketing. You do what will appease your target market and you find new creative ways to get in front of as many people in the niche as possible.

If you give great value and don't spend all your time trying to sell them something you will find the loyalty and the loyalty tends to lead to them sharing your info with their friends in the niche.

Once I understood that it takes value it all changed fast.

Its hard sometimes because you will spend a ton of time writing and not making money. That value lasts forever so not to sound cheesy "If you build it they will come" Its just true.

I stopped writing to SEO and as soon as I did I picked up more traffic for searches I never thought of.

Write good content and give more than you take and it will come.

It hasn't clicked for me yet, but I think that I'm beginning to realize that I need to create my own product and sell it, instead of relying on other people's products to pay bills.

    Is that right?

Well, that depends on who you ask. There are many affiliates that only promote other people's products and earn a substantial amount of money.

True dat. But the above is what my IM mentor said, and I think it makes sense. I would rather have my own product, and have it promoted by tens or hundreds of affiliates on Clickbank, giving them 75% commission for a $70 product, rather than trying to sell somebody's $50 product at a 50% commission 16 billion times .

Do you have your own product, Matt? Thanks for the insight!

Pretty instant for me 15 years ago or so.
Got a sale from Costa Rica within a couple of days and it's been like that every month since. Was hooked immediately on all this.

When my daughter joined my business and helped me out with all the technical stuff, if it wasn't for her I just would've gone round in circles buying the latest fad product!

Being able to do all the technical side of things with her help has been a blessing. I wouldn't of even been able to create a twitter account let alone a Wordpress site!
