Hey everyone,

I've been wanting to start a list for sometime now, but I have a sticking point when it comes to the sequence of emails. I understand that you need to give away a free report in order to get subscribers, but once they are on your list, how do you communicate with them?

    You send them followup emails that provide great info for them to stay on your list and then send them some other items that they can purchase through you to make $$$. Just don't sent them junk and sales pages if you want to retain a list. Its trust building is what you are after.

    There a lot more to it then that but that's the basics. There a ton of classes on mastering this as well. If you need more pointers please let me know, be glad to assist.

    How often do you email them? The answers will vary. Even if you have high quality content, people don't always like very frequent mailings. Don't make all of your emails ads or people will unsubscribe fast.

      So would it be cool if I gave them a survey to take on how often they liked to be e-mailed?

        Maybe not. They might not know (at least until they've seen enough of them to know what they're like), and it may make you look, to some of them, as if you're inexperienced, and - however honest - that may not be the best approach for building credibility and trust (which is the whole purpose, here, after all!), and it'll be difficult to come to a conclusion from the sometimes-conflicting replies you'd get, anyway. To a large degree you have the opportunity, with email marketing, to set their expectations however you want to fulfil them, so don't give up that advantage.

    You could use follow-ups or you can simply send a broadcast every now and then. It all depends on the type of list you want to build. As for the mailing frequency, it depends on the e-mails you send and other factors. If you send only promotional e-mails, then you shouldn't mail them too frequently, unless your list is large and you add plenty of subscribers daily.

    I personally like an email 1 maybe 2 times a week from a person. Anything over this -- I get overwhelmed and hardly ever open any of their emails.

    As stated above though -- it will vary from person to person and what niche you are in.

    As to what you send them -- simply find helpful information that will help your prospects out. This can be a new tool, a video form you tube, or a tactic you used that helped you in some way.

    If you still are unsure what to send to them -- you can always send out a broadcast message, and ask them what is the most pressing problem they are facing.

    Then simply email each person that replies to you back with a personal message. Your subscribers will love you for this, and you will develop an even better relationship with them.

    To communicate with your list you can easily send them an email. For those 12 people closest to your business I talk to on a daily basis. But for the most part you set up a series of emails in an auto responder. And the communicating is done on auto pilot.

    You don't need to give a free report to get subscribers. You need to give a gift to get a higher subscriber rate. The free report is a simple easy gift.

    You use an auto responder to hold your subscribers emails. And that auto responder allows you to keep track of their follow up. Example- you make one email, and the auto responder sends it to each subscriber at a specific date, and time.

    The top 2 mistakes people make when using an auto responder are, Spamming, and asking for money too fast.

    All my auto responders have a once a week email at most. Unless I really need to talk to them. Each weeks email contains better content than the last. Usually the 6 month mark you can make some money.

    Thanks everyone for the advice. Basically, starting out I would be using my list for affiliate marketing, and later on down the line I would possibly make my own product and use the list for that.

    I was just unsure about when to "sell" them, and what to send to them in between.

    You don't necessarily need your own product to sell anything to them.

    You can always promote something as an affiliate, and amazingly people will still buy through your link as long as you can convince them that what you're promoting is good stuff.

  • Hi,

    This is a very good question and we agree with those who answered that your email sequence should go along the lines that follow:

    Email one sent immediately they sign up asking them to confirm it really was them who subscribed by clicking a link which takes them to the download page to get their free gift/report. They had already seen the "Thank You Page" telling them to go to their email box to do this? This is easily set upon your autoresponder.

    If they confirm then the next day send a thank you email welcoming them and telling them what to expect from you and when the next email will be sent to them. On no account try selling anything to them yet unless you want them to unsubscribe?

    As for when to send further emails, we disagree with those who say wait a week? In a week they may well have joined another list and won't read your emails or simply unsubscribe? We believe in keeping them focused and excited for more by sending the next email the next day or the day after at the latest. As long as you provide real high quality free no sales pitch emails here, they will mostly look forward to reading what you send them?

    We continue sending information packed emails not more then 1 or 2 days apart in the first 2 weeks before adding an affiliate link at the end of the follow up emails so that they are not asked to buy but can choose to click on your link if they like what they have received and wish to learn faster and more about what they signed up to receive in the first place. Only from week 3 increase the gap to 3 or 4 days if you wish?

    Only emails which blatantly sell with stupid messages such as "My good friend Joe has just released a product that will show you how to make "$10,000 within 10 days, click here now!", are the ones people unsubscribe from in droves! Most who send them have never met Joe but are simply wishing to put their greedy hands into your wallet. Softly softly catchee monkey is the better way. Keep writing good free information without fluff or filler with a link at the end and few will leave you.

    If you are lost for ideas swipe emails you receive and modify the good ones to suit your business? Or do an online search for email swipe files or buy a book or maybe a free or low cost ebook with some examples and rewrite them in your own words?

    This works for us.

    Just try to be relaxed and send them some good, warm mails... do not try to sell it too much (no matter how funny it may sound).

    The thing that helped me was:
    "Give 90% of knowledge for free, and 10% will sell like crazy. Do not try to sell, be cunning and make friends... your sales will go crazy..."
