.org for blog --> worth it?

Fellow Warriors,

I have a good domain name, not branded, not trademarked but the .com and .net extensions are taken by those nasty domain hunters.

Do you think a .org extension will work for a blog? Do you know of any?

Would love to hear your ideas on this!
Tijs

It will work if you really want it to, but you're definitely fighting an up-hill battle with a .org...I can't think of any successful sites out there with a .org, though I'm sure there are a few.

As much as it sucks to hear, it's probably time to think of a new name

Yes, it can work (and for SEO purposes it makes absolutely no difference at all, of course), but to me that wouldn't be relevant.

The point, surely, is that there's little sense in starting up a site on a domain-name of which the .com extension already belongs to someone else?

It doesn't matter whether it's used/disused/parked/for-sale/whatever: if you don't own it yourself, you can never control or influence what can end up on that .com domain. The only certainties are negative ones: you'll lose some traffic to it, some time; you'll lose a little credibility, some time, to some people; your resale value will be next-to-nothing, etc. etc. etc.

    However
you look at it, it's all downside and no advantages at all.

    Just my perspective.

    Thanks both!

That 's bad, I actually hoped you would say: just do it your blog will be successful anyway

I already have another .com name that's pretty good, though this one was just a bit better.

It's a pity that there are so many domains being parked and never used!

It might be! Someone else owning the .com has very little impact on that, at all. To me, this issue isn't about "whether my site will be successful anyway". It's about not being willing to build a business on a domain-name of which the .com variation already belongs to someone else - they're two different issues.

.com domains are more common. So, if the .com domain of the website that you are trying to build is not yet taken, I think, taking it would be better. But, for me, that is just for the sake of having a better recall. How you will monetize your domain is still the thing that will help you get the success that you are aiming for.

I have a question to all SEO experts here...
What about all those new extensions that are introduced those days to the market?
like .fun .cool .travel .green ,design ....
i understand that ,com will be a history soon, or maybe I am just deeply wrong...
I am talking about the change explained here: www.whatdomain dot org

I am just not sure if it is better to wait and get new extension or grab any available .com out there

It you want to create a brand that people remember, talk about share then I would use .com everytime.

If your blog is purely content driven and people find it via searches the .org would be ok (but remember people will automatically assume it's a .com by default!)

Have you asked to buy the .com?

.org domains are fine. But consider that .com is the most common. By default, people will assume that websites end in .com. But it's your call
