Affiliate Marketing + Adsense in one website

Is it considers counter-productive if I placed both affiliate links and adsense ads in same page or website? Will this increases the potentials of earning money or it will reduces the overall sales and incomes?
I am asking this because I am under the impression that I can fully utilizing the revenues if the visitors are not interested of buying or clicking the affiliate links, and would prefer to clicks on the adsense ads, which it means that I at least still earning a penny over nothing.
However, I also have the feelings that the same visitors may be actually interested to buy or click the affiliate links in my website but got distracted by adsense ads that I placed in the same page, and ultimately clicking on the ads, thus reducing the overall money that I am supposed to earn....from affiliate products.
But then, is this really how the world works? I know there is no perfect answer for this but I would gladly to hear you guys opinions and thoughts about this approaches.
