I have tried all the outsource sites and keep being told they can do what I want for less than $60 but when I follow up and try to continue the project I don't hear from them again.. anyone know where I can get reliable software developers??

Try the outsourcing companies - freelancer, odesk, elance etc

Best thing though is to make sure you know the basics of coding so that you can actually pick out who's good and who's not.

Also depends a bit on what language. So freelancer I've seen heaps of php, c and java and I've yet to see some good RoR devs there yet.

Thanks Tong - tried all of them! What I want is quite simple and they say they can do it in a day for x dollars but then they say the can't or else they just don't respond.. becoming a little disillusioned with this outsourcing thing!!

Odesk and Freelancer are good companies if you need outsourcing. They are "good" but not actually "great". If you want some real service, I would recommend you to post on Craigslist Philippines. But the best thing for you to do is to look for agencies based in the Philippines. Their rates are competitive and, I must say, they have great, goal-driven writers.

Are you sure what you want is simple? The reason I am asking is lot's of times a non programer thinks something is simple when it really is not.

It could possibly be that once they look at what is involved in this simple program it turns out to not be so simple.

I have over 30 years of programming experience. If you want to know if it truly is simple, just PM me the details you are giving the programmers and I'll let you know if it is or is not simple.

What do you want? Post it here and us programmer guys can let you know if it's feasible.

Or are you the person who posted this to oDesk?

You might want to partner with an actual programmer or do a one hour consult with a professional (read expensive) programmer to formalize exactly what you want to have done.

I lost thousands upon thousands of dollars last year trying to get done what was supposed to have been a simple job...so I would never go cold to an outsourcing site again.

Perhaps a fellow Warrior who gets software built all the time could give you a recommendation? Doesn't hurt to ask;-)

  • There's "simple" and there's "feasible". You may have a simple idea that you think would be easy enough to do. But a programmer looks into an idea and thinks, "is it feasible?, can it be done in the timeframe set? with the resources that I have? with the budget given?" If you don't give a programmer enough information, time, resources, and money to finish a project, it's not worth starting.

What is it that you want to get done? I have few contacts I could get you in touch with.

  • Hi,

I am a student programmer yet to release my first automation tools.
If your software idea is no big secret then care to explain what you want it to do ?
I don't promise I will build it though if it is way over my skills or too time consuming to build or seems uninteresting to me.

The biggest thing is making sure you have a seriously defined product before you give it to the programmer. EVERYTHING has to be laid out so they know exactly what to do.

We always hire from oDesk, after trying basically every other service. We find it's the most consistent and has a good review system.

Maybe you are trying to get something done cheaper than it should be too. $60 doesn't get you much code

I agree with Jimmy, especially regarding your requirements before starting the development.

What were some recruiting firms you have checked out?
Did you already try Odesk, Elance and Freelancer? If you were not able to find a reliable software dev(s) in their site maybe you should try looking here.
They have recruitment specialists who can help you conduct interviews for the applicants, give pre-tests if they are really qualified for the position, and gauge their communication skills...

If that keeps on happening to you, there must really be a problem with what you are asking them to do. Or maybe, you should have asked them first about the limitations of their service. Just a tip. If you think that what you are asking from them is very hard, let them be the ones to set the rate, especially if you are already desperate to have it done.

Try to contact one of the higher bidders - Maybe the $60 that they say it can be done for can but its not enough for them to be serious about.

I agree. You just haven't found the programmer who finds it easy to do the job that you are asking them to do. But seriously, if everybody is already turning down your request, $60 may really be insufficient. You should think about how much effort they will be putting into the job.
