Have you ever ACCIDENTLY bought something?

Just curious:

We've probably all seen this at least once in the past - a customer contacts us after buying something, and says "I pressed the wrong button. I didn't mean to buy. Please refund me."

I've always assumed that was buyers remorse, but I'm curious:

Have you ever accidently bought something?

Clicked a wrong button, and bought a product you didn't actually want to buy?

Clickbank this would be pretty close to impossible with, as you'd need to accidently enter your credit card details, but with Paypal, perhaps the person just clicked on the sales link to see what the price was, and logged in for some reason?

I really am curious - have you at some stage HONESTLY accidently clicked something and bought a product you didn't want?

And if so, how?

I'd love to hear some experiences!

cheers
Sam

I get these refund requests too.

    Nope. Never.

I can see someone doing that with an upsell, sure. Especially the way some of the things are set up. But it'd be kind of hard with most initial purchases.

Last year I bought one of those free-with-shipping/forced-continuity newsletter things from one of the IM gurus...

The upsell pages were set up differently than I was used to seeing. There was only one button at the bottom to get you to the next page, so I clicked on it without thinking. Unfortunately, a box was checked by default, committing me to a $497 product, and since I had already given my cc info, I was billed for it.

Totally my fault for trying to speed past the page too quickly, but I was still pissed off. I got it reversed a few days later, but it screwed up my checking account. I got hit for a bunch of overdraft fees and had a wonderful "discussion" with my wife about my IM purchases...

I got the fees reversed after I explained to the bank what happened, but it wasn't a fun experience. I still think the upsell page should not have been constructed that way, because it made it too easy to buy the expensive upsell by mistake, although the responsibility was still mine. (This is the cue for the hard-liners to scold me for not going over the page with a magnifying glass before I moved on.)

I haven't personally, but I know someone who purchased the same product when offered at different price level. Contacted the buyer, thinking I could refund, didn't hear back so I didn't offer refund. If he still asks about it today, I will.

Another customer meant to purchase two different affiliate products from me, and I noticed from the Paypal transactions that he purchased the same thing twice.

I quickly offered refund before hearing from him (because I had previous contact with him), he then thanked for the refund, proceeded to purchase the second product, which he meant to buy in the first place. We were both happy.

He said he didn't want to make a big deal when he realized he made a mistake. I told him that he shouldn't have to purchase the same digital product twice.

Hahaha, that's one of those times where "But honest, baby, it was an accident!" doesn't really fly

But I know what you mean - sometimes you've got to be really careful about what you're actually buying. A similar thing I've seen often is you can get all this great stuff for a certain price, but it's not until you get to the Paypal screen that you see it's that price MONTHLY - not a once-off fee.

I agree with Paul and Ken, it could happen with upsells, especially one-click upsells, but has anyone done this with an initial sale?

Don't be embarassed if you have, this isn't for finger pointing, I'm just really curious about how it could happen!

I've seen a similar thing before, Takuya: people buy the same product twice for various reasons via Clickbank. Sometimes they use a certain credit card, change their mind and go back, not realising they've already bought it (or realising, but just wanting to refund that one and put it on the other card anyway).

I don't mind refunding double puchases - as you said, in most cases theres no need to buy two copies

Nope - never accidentally made it through all the steps of buying a product. What happened, the guy was sleep-surfing or something?

However, like Ken, I've twice gotten caught up in tricky forced continuity programs. First time it was fairly easy to cancel, once I realized my CC was getting billed for something.

The second time is still ongoing, and I'm finding it impossible to log into the one and only website where I'm "allowed" to request a cancellation.

I found the seller's Facebook account and sent an email - no reply.

Found his office phone number and discovered he only had voicemail. Left two messages - no reply.

Yesterday I found yet another CC charge. I guess it's time to do my first-ever chargeback. This, even though he states on his terms and conditions page (found it afterwards) that he may charge a $150 chargeback penalty. Don't know if that is enforceable, but I guess we're headed toward finding out.

That case was more or less accidental. True, I didn't read deeply enough to find the relevant weasel words at purchase time, but even after I knew they were there somewhere and went looking for them, it took me 10 minutes of careful searching to find them.

Anyway, your accidental buyer sounds like he's probably just a serial refunder. Time to write him off and move forward.

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,

Yep, it's happened to me a bunch of times. I "accidentally" bought this product from this Australian Mate that offers a product called DL Guard. Not only that but I "accidentally" bought his yearly upgrades, and to give me further trouble I "accidentally" bought something called "Hopguard", and to make matter feverishly worse I "accidentally" bought something called a "Corporate Site". He must be a really devilish fellow, but I can't prove it because anytime I have a question he answers right away.

    Ha ha, liked that

I think the person couldn't think of a better excuse so thought the'd go with the old bought it by mistake.

Personally, I think it is very unlikely to be able to go throught the paypal process by mistake as there are a few screens and a final accept.

Nope. But I accidentally didn't buy something once. A buddy of mine and I were in a music shop. He went up to the till and I assumed he was making a purchase. We were by the entrance and he handed me a tape (yes, this was many years ago). I assumed he was showing me his purchase, so I walked out of the store while looking at the track listing on the back then handed it back to him. He was so surprised he just kept walking. He didn't even tell me he hadn't actually bought the tape, and was just showing it to me until the next day. Dodged a bullet there. Would have sucked to get busted for unintentional shoplifting.

Nope, I can't see how anyone can make a mistake on the initial sale.

I agree with you guys about an upsell, especially since last year, but come on. I don't care what kind of processor the seller is offering, the buyer still has to log into the processor account to make a purchase or at the very least, fill out their CC info!

So it's not a matter of clicking the wrong button, or making a mistake in clicking. The "mistake" was the fact that they went through with the purchase lol!

It's buyer's remorse as you say.

Impulse buying is a better way for putting it in perspective. I don't buy stuff when I'm not 100% sold on the product. If I have doubts about the product, I postpone buying it. Later on, I end up not making the purchase at all.

It's practically impossible to buy something by accident (?!?). Clicking the "order" button is not enough, you also have to fill in an order form with all your personal info. It's impossible to do this by accident (unless you fall in a trance or something like this :-).

What happened to me instead... I bought the same ebook twice. The reason? Forgetting, of course. Maybe I should ask for a refund, but I didn't dare - I don't know why. (Fortunately, it was not an expensive ebook).

I get people doing that all the time. Most of what I sell is evergreen, and folks forget they bought it last year or whenever. I try and keep an eye out for those, and immediately refund the second order when I spot one.

A lady yesterday had a problem with PayPal and didn't think her order went through. She tried again, and I got a second order. You should have heard the sound in her voice when I called to ask if she'd ordered a copy for an associate or wanted a refund on an accidental double purchase.

If you goof like that, get a refund. There's no way you should have to pay for the same thing twice, unless you're giving a copy to someone else. Any merchant who has a problem with that isn't worth dealing with.

          Hi Sam,

Have you ever ACCIDENTLY bought something?
I know some people who were led to believe that they were being given something really nice, only to find out later that in reality they were actually purchasing something that turned out to be not quite as nice as they were originally led to believe. It was a difficult, lengthy, painful and expensive contract to get out of, too.

          I won't elaborate

If I was in a coma and half way between purgatory and hell I couldn't
accidentally buy something on an initial purchase.

It's just the lamest excuse anybody has ever come up with for wanting a
          refund either because...

          1. They had buyer's remorse.
          2. They intended to get the product for nothing from the start.

Now, I've accidentally slipped and fallen on my head (which explains why
I'm like I am) but that was only because one of Kevin Riley's hamsters
tripped me with a tommy gun.

Sam, to be completely honest, yes I have accidentally bought something.

Right when the war room opened, I somehow bought 2 subscriptions.

I asked for a refund on one, and Allen obliged.

Allen once stated there were only two refund requests on the War Room, and one was a double bill.

    The double bill was me.

    Does that qualify?

Well it happened to me once. I had been a member of eBay for a while and
never really used the service and I pressed one of those "buy now" buttons
thinking that it would require further input on my part, only to realize
that I had bought a $10,000 product accidentally.

The seller wasn't too happy when I emailed back to say that I made a
mistake. He asked me to tell that to eBay and the listing fees he had
to pay. He filed an infraction against me.

Well, lesson learned. But again, I never thought that it was a one-step
process and found out the hard way.
