But you can only connect the dots looking backwards!

My biggest bit of advice: Time is your biggest asset. Don't waste it.

  • Don't procrastinate and don't wait to make everything perfect. You really have to jump right in and give it your all. Mistakes are needed to get better so don't be afraid to make them. Sales and marketing is every bit as important as your product/service so don't put it aside.

Think BIG. Don't try to make $50,000 or $100,000 per year, shoot for 5 million or more. Don't try to change a few lives, try to change the world. Don't let anyone else's low expectations lower yours.

For me, it's to find people who will complement your strengths. It's tough to start a business on your own. Not to say it's impossible to go solo -- that would be silly as a lot of us IM'ers are DIY, do-everything folks. But, if you like coming up with ideas but you aren't that skilled at making them happen, look for someone who is action oriented.

That "you complete me" movie line? Perfect for entrepreneurship too

Almost everything has been done already, so don't try to reinvent the wheel. Unless you have a truly unique idea. Do your research and find ways improve on existing ideas. Find something that you are passionate about and be ready to work your butt off. A favorite quote of mine is "The dictionary is the only place where success comes before work." Vince Lombardi.

  • I've been coaching for over 20 years, and I've discovered that you can give two people exactly the same business information - even a detailed step by step plan - and one person will run with it, and the other will SAY they are running with it but will actually be finding 10 reasons why today "isn't the right day"- or try to get me to do it for them.

It all boils down to mindset. Everyone wants to change but few are willing to let go of the baggage of their past to let it happen. People organize their vacations with more detail than they organize their futures.

For anyone wanting to succeed in business - any business - I suggest they spend at least three months reading everything there is on the mindset of success. In particular, go onto YouTube and check out all videos by Brian Tracy, Bob Proctor and Jim Rohn. And it's free!

Then join a gym. Get control over something - and that something is yourself. Lose/gain a few pounds. Be confident in the knowledge that you have gained control over something. Then extend that something to your goals.

    Above all, change your mind!

    To your success

I would say focus on making income that is passive. Don't trade time for money. If you must trade time for money start investing some of the money you earn in yourself and start developing the skills you need to develop passive income streams. Never ever give up. Always fall forward and remember failure is not failure but stepping stones to a lesson or breakthrough.

As others have said... Focus is the key to becoming successful very quickly online.

Many people mistake being busy with working -- when in fact the majority of the time people usually are watching videos or reading forum instead of creating content or tweaking their sales funnel.

So my advice -- become really good at one thing, this can be a traffic method, copy writing, creating videos, or Facebook ads. You can learn how to do it if you buckle down and focus a whole day on it.

Then immediately implement what you just learned and record you results. After that move on to another area you want to learn and become better at.

Do this for a couple of weeks to a month you can easily have a profitable sales funnel and be bringing in constant traffic and making sales -- or you could be doing this within 1 week.

Don't get discouraged when you're getting new customers but your profits are still in the negative. Don't forget to sell. I wrote a blog post about it on my website in the 'chrisandyourlife' section.

    To summarise:

Start-ups are usually a single person who is having to take on all the roles such as: marketing, admin, web design, etc.

Often selling gets forgotten or is passively avoided because of a fear of rejection/failure.

The most important thing I have learned about being an entrepreneur is that belief matters more than anything. What we tell ourselves will create the outcomes we achieve, good and bad. It took many unsuccessful businesses to learn that it's an inside job... it starts with what you say when you are talking to yourself. Good book, I recommend it and was a major breakthrough in understanding the power of believing in myself. If you can't fully believe in yourself at the moment get around people who will and encourage you until you can. Have faith and most of all to take massive action, after all I'm the only one who's going to be responsible for my successes.

Step back and look at the big picture. While I agree that you you need to focus, too many entrepreneurs I have known were so focused on what they were working on at the moment that they lost perspective. A lot of successful companies today, including Facebook and Groupon, took their products in different directions than their founders originally planned because the founders realized that there was a better path.

    Don't be myopic.

    Hi Zephyr:

I have a business that I started in 1985 and it is still going strong. Although there have been a lot of downs and a few ups, made a profit every year. Level of competition is going up. Also, rates are going down as companies out source more. Mostly, that puts us in a squeeze.

A lot of advice that was good years ago... well, it is now crap.

Education was once a ticket to high pay. Trust me, that is no longer the case. Well, there are computer programmers who work inside a 7-11 for near minimum wage. Back in their home country they made $200/month programming computers and they feel lucky now.

There are two college professors, one from Honduras, the other from Nicaragua waiting tables in miami... Hey, they both make more in one week than they did back home in one month and they dream of owning their own restaurant in a few years. Ask them what good an education is. Don't ask me.

I hope this already hasn't been said but the biggest tip that I can personally give to any newcomer to the industry is to not be afraid to fail, embrace failure and take immediate action when you learn something new and don't be the guy or girl that has to get everything "right" or "perfect" before you launch your next venture because you will never get it "perfect" or "right" to begin with.

Lessons I learned the hard way through my own experience.

Don't look for shortcuts. If it takes you one week to make $10 stick with it till you make more. If it takes you one month to make $100 stick with it till you make more. And vice versa...

Often times we are our own enemy in that if we think it is taking too long to make a million bucks, we try to look for a quicker way or stop, give up and search for another shining object.

Formulate your plan, stick with your plan, and after it becomes autopilot then you can jump onto another plan.

Look for ways to make the most amount of money in the least amount of time with the least amount of effort required.

Basically don't spend 20 hours doing something that will make you $1 when you can spend 20 hours doing something that will make you $20.

Shoot for the stars to reach the moon.. Surround yourself with people that think alike, people that you can learn from.. Make new connections, networking is important. If you have the opportunity, always think of stability. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Most importantly, if you have a great idea, try to make it on your own. Finding investors does not always benefit in the long run, you got to be in control of your creation.

Never listen to people who say you will fail. And, trust me when I say that most people online will tell you what a huge failure you are going to be. Those people are speaking from their own experience as many have failed. Maybe these people think they are trying to help you out by sparing you pain. But the net result is that if you listen, you will quit without trying or only put in half the effort required to succeed.

    BE HONEST and AUTHENTIC

For me at least, that is the biggest thing that you could show as an entrepreneur. the people in the outside world are real, they have their own lives, problems, pains and needs... Whatever business or service we are in, we need to stand and help them either with our product or even a simple help that we could offer.

    Do not focus on MONEY!

Money will only give you more freedom if you think about it, what matters most is the relationship that you are building with people...
