The Malware Warnings

Like it says in The Guide:

Don't Panic


Anyway... Folks using Firefox and Chrome have been seeing a malware warning when trying to log into the forum. First things first: As far as I have been able to tell, there is no actual threat posed to the members by the issue causing the alerts. From what I have seen, the problem is that a seller linked to images in their WSO which are hosted on a site that has since been compromised. The affected site is jvwithjj dot com.

It is unlikely (but not impossible) that the images posed any threat to viewers, and the WSO in which they were found is old, and has only seen a single post in the past month. Not a lot of people exposed to them.

Still, we deleted the thread. Our technical geniuses will need to see if there are other instances of that link, and then contact Da Goog to ask them to review the listing before the warnings will stop. Just be aware that the cause does not constitute a real threat to you while using the forum.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled mayhem.

      Not sure. The tech wizards will need to double-check to make sure there isn't anything else going on, and then there's the wait for Google to review the issue. That's usually pretty quick, but I have no idea if the guys are even awake at this time of the evening, much less online.

          When you go through Google search, you are getting an error message FROM Google: Malware Warning

          When you use Opera and type the URL directly, there is no issue.

    None of my anti-malware/anti-virus/firewall software/hardware (which is always kept up to date) has found any signs of malware. Very interesting.

    It's likely that advertisements are introducing the malware.

    Only Chrome, Firefox, and SeaMonkey (and now Safari too) seem to be tied to that third party that is reporting the issue.

      Just started getting it in Safari, too.

      I haven't gotten any alerts from Norton Internet Security. That's up to date as of 15 minutes ago, and I'd expect them to be on top of any of the image-based exploits. No warnings when I went to the affected page.

            In all my years as a member, the format of the WF has always stayed perfect in FF. But opening the WF in IE, the format is perfect :confused:

    It might be a good idea to block external images in posts. There's a lot of crazy shenanigans one can employ with the help of images displayed in forum threads.

    It's been suggested in another thread that people use Sandboxie when browsing the internet. Very good advice.

    It creates a virtual partition of sorts on your hard drive, so no malware can effect your operating system and cause you problems. It's free.

      Yep, firefox is a dogs breakfast with WF at present, l have tried IE, without any problems, except this one! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...US/Capture.JPG Hopefully this image will show up, but if not it was a popup that occured in IE over the top of the WF listings. I also accessed one of my threads with some %^&*, creating a dodgy link with a word. Seems like the tech, people have the firewall down for repairs and it is a free for all for hackers and trolls! Shane :0} PS glad l didn't install Chrome in IE, IE apart from a popup is working fine!

    I'm sure its affecting traffic. There are reports on other sites from people saying they can't get on WF. I'm sure there are many more that have simply given up. Hopefully they'll try again soon.


    If you are concerned about malware/viruses on your system. I very HIGHLY suggest that you install MalwareBytes (free), update, and run it. You can install and run it while your computer is in safemode (with networking) as well. Press F8 while starting up on most computers.

    In the past, I've had MalwareBytes find a dozen various malicious files and McAffee find ZERO, while running them at the same time.

      I think it's the new traffic that's getting affected the most, because most of returning users will find their way in.

      I was searching for a comparison of different autoresponder systems. I got the malware warning in FireFox and then googled warrorforum.com attack page or something like that and came to a different thread which was closed and redirected here. I still get the warnings coming from google. But once I get inside the site, it is somewhat ok. The site itself does not have a background and looks kind of weird. But the forum still works. So I suppose a moderator can post to this thread when it is all back to normal?

        PrevX was awesome, and did extremely fast scans. It's now part of the Webroot Secure Anywhere suite, and from what I can tell, works exactly the same as PrevX did.

        I used Prevx (now Webroot) for several years, but discontinued a couple of months ago, only because I'm trying out something else at the moment, but will probably go back to Webroot soon. I really liked it, and miss its fast scans and overall protection of my PC.

        I would highly recommend Webroot to anyone who wants a fast and effective antivirus/anti-malware suite. Look for online coupons for discounts, I think you can get about 50% off for multi-year subscriptions.

        I have used Malwarebytes and Spybot Search & Destroy synergistically for years.

        This year, I upgraded to Malwarebytes Pro - about the only difference from the free version is auto-update. This is the only reason I purchased the Pro version.

        Spybot Search & Destroy is also an excellent FREE software that works great in conjunction with Malwarebytes. You just need to remember to update it weekly.

        As for the recent issues with the WF, neither software nor security detected any problems at all.

    (I ran a virus scan with Avast, just to be safe. It didn't find anything.)

    At first i was shocked to see the warning, but after some guessing game, i thought some user might have shared some link with malicious content. So, decided to check details and came to know about the limited infection:

      Uhm...Paul *is* an Admin/Moderator. Not Allen (site owner) Admin but he's authorized to speak on such matters. There's nothing Allen or anyone else could have said that Paul didn't in the first post. They traced down the source of the malware, deleted the threads & it was a waiting game from there. There was nothing more anyone could do or say as it was all in Google's hands (as is about everything we do on the innerwebz). Now the world seems to be back to normal.

      I,am using firefox and I have not seen any of these issues at all ,I would not have even known anything without seeing this thread.

      Yesterday the 24th, it seemed their were some issues with the server but "no" other nonsense Like googoodoodle was warning.

      It has been noted that they do not like internet marketeers anyway.

      I hope this is not some new animal they are throwing in the mix.

    For you gambler types, lets put this in perspective:

    Since Google reports there were 4,487 pages tested here and had found 9 instances of pages that had malicious software, that means statistically saying that IF nothing had changed since then, the odds of you getting that infection, had your anti-virus failed, and you were lucky enough to open one of those pages/threads/images...

    There is approx. a 1/20th of 1% chance you will get the infection... or your computer will. LOL!

    However, since the OP stated in the first post that one infected thread was deleted already, then the odds go even more in your favor. Then you factor in since Google's report is revealing as to the source, etc, the forum here will make likely changes. Even further reducing your odds of catching an OTD... ie, Online Transmitted Disease!

    I signed up for the War Room 3 days ago, and got a bunch of Fraud Alerts from my credit card overnight.

    I can't say for SURE it was this site...but it was the only transaction I had made other than my cable bill on that card in 6 months...

      I'd also get and run some really good security software on your computer. It's possible it's been infected and you have a keylogger or other malware on your machine.

          I agree with the suggestions to run a few other programs. I typically run the free Adaware, Avast and Malware Bytes, and it is always amazing what one will find that the other didn't.

      Now that I've read this thread, my judgement that I could safely ignore the warning seems to be correct.
      This time around it looks that way.

      I not only viewed the thread the graphics were in, I visited the site that was supposedly the problem. Got the badware warning, but there's nothing in my logs to show any active incursion attempts from the site. Neither Norton Internet Security or Malwarebytes found any malware issues or other threats on the machine I used for the tests.

      As far as I can see, only 3 people visited the problem thread yesterday anyway. The guy who reported a BS post, the one who posted it, and me.

      I wouldn't assume it will always be that way in the future, though. If you aren't using solid security software and something like Sandboxie, I'd avoid sites throwing that warning. It's right way more often than "wrong."
