need to transfer a domain to my hosting account question....

Hi Warriors,

I need to transfer a domain that's currently live and getting traffic to my hosting account. Now, I want to be sure I don't mess anything up, so I'm double checking with you guys!

Here's what I'm thinking I need to do, so correct me if I'm wrong--

1) log on to current webserver and download all files onto my hard drive
2) change the nameservers so that the domain points to my hosting
3) add domain to my hosting account and upload all files

Do you think that'll do it? Or is there the possibility that something will get lost in the downloading of the files?

Thanks!!
Rebecca

In a nutshell, that is it. If your site is made with Wordpress or other database driven software, transferring the database can be a little tricky, but not super difficult.

Just remember to NOT cancel or delete your existing host until the new one is confirmed working and up and running. That way if you mess up the new side, you can point the Nameservers back to the original until you get it fixed.

You could also ask your new web host to make the transfer for you. Most will do it for free, but I like to go through the process myself to learn the techniques.

I agree, many hosts will do it for you. Side note, I never change the DNS until after I've uploaded everything to the new hosting, never know what might happen, want to make sure it's ready before switching.

yeah, see if your new host will do this for you. many do and it's really easy if the old host and the new host both use CPANEL. everything gets transferred over including databases, emails, password protected directories, ftp accounts, etc.

yeah, don't change the dns until everything is copied over.

    Rebecca,
    NO, NO, NO.
You have a live site and are getting traffic so it is important you get the sequence right.....

Replicate (duplicate or setup) your current website on the other host you are thinking of going to BEFORE you do the nameserver changes with your current registrar.
Make sure the new host is set up and everything is working correctly.
THEN go change the DNS nameservers. The DNS namesever could change to 72 hours to effect thru-out the internet.

Doing this will minimize or eliminate any potential downtime due to unforseen circumstances......

  • Hi...

How do I upload/replicate the site before I actually transfer the domain to my new hosting account? I won't be able to see it on my hosting until the domain's transfered, right?

    Thanks!!!!

your new host will provide you a link where you can access your site even before you change your DNS

i strongly recommend having your host do it unless it's a very simple site with no scripts installed and customizations, etc.

i've done it before and it can be a pain

Who you have your domain name registered with and where that domain is hosted on, are two separate things. Your domain name is registered with a registrar (who could also be your "hoster", for want of a better word).

You are free to choose any host you want; I recomend you do not use the one same company, to do both. I doubt here you are refering to transfering your desired "registrar"" of your domain name? You are probably asking about transfering the hosting of your site to another company. If you have registered and hosted your site with the one same company, then what you need to do (in the right sequence) to move your site to another host is important.

When you change hosts, you need to change the nameserver entries to "point" them to your new host. Currently they are pointed to whoever your current host is, and changing this record is merely updating the details with your current domain name registrar.

Hope that is not too confusing.....
Holler or PM me if you are still confused.

      Update:
the 2 sigs you have, first is different registrar/hosting, 2nd seemed to be same registrar/host.
