Clickbank...don't screw this up

Not long ago CB gave their site a "facelift" with a new red/green/what the hell color scheme.

I thought it was hideous, but whatever.

Today they have made a new change that has left me baffled though.

The checkout page has now joined the fray with a new cinnamon color scheme and red logo that I believe will depress conversions.

Outside of CB I have sent thousands of transactions through split-testing software and I can tell you that checkout page colors that convert are at the top white and also a pale or "business blue" which is what they had previously.

I know CB usually rolls things out after testing but I have a hard time believing they tested this change...I just can't imagine a big red logo and a brown background outperform the blue they previously used.

I've snapped a pic of what I'm talking about. I love CB, but I hope they reconsider bringing these colors to their checkout page.

That's the funny thing about stuff like that.

    Not everything works for everybody!

Just because a particular color scheme works for you, doesn't guarantee it's going to work for me, and vice versa.

Yeah, a blue background with a white forgeground works well for you, but I've never seen McDonalds use it.

It also doesn't do particularly well in selling sports gear either (I'll let you guess which one does).

Perhaps it also doesn't do that well in shopping carts, at least as far as clicbank is concerned.

    We will see.

Many of the "gurus" relate that these same colors are at the top of the list for them as well. I would not have made this post if I had not done extensive testing not only for myself but for others as well.

Traditionally, reds and browns are at the bottom for transactional pages.

Saying that McDonalds doesn't use blue...seriously, that is to the point of ridiculousness. How is that relevant to the discussion of a checkout page? Reds and yellows work well for the food industry...but that is neither here nor there.

My point was that I hope CB did not simply change this color scheme to match their updated website without thought to their overall conversion rates.

i think clickbank will be watching closely, and if their conversions/sales go down enough, they'll revert the change.

But as Floyd said, you don't know what will work for the general public =)

While I have no scientific reason, I agree with LB, the new colors on ClickBank are hideous!

Only time will tell if the "digital products buying public" will be turned on or turned off by the change.

Looks to me like they could have taken the time to split test it before rolling out the new colors.

          Thanks for posting this, Harvey!

All I'm seeing are the new colors. Good to know they seem to be split testing.

Red is the international language of Wealth and Success.

Where ever you go, shop stores, quite a few out there, use red text, or red banners....

        Pizza hut
        domino's pizza
        mac donalds
        tescos
        sainsburys
        target
        marriot hotel

        etc.

you'll also notice a lot of landing pages using red too.

I have to agree with you, I think the new colour's hideous too.

I'd like to think Clickbank will be smart enough to moniter the conversion rate. I hope.

    Agree: The new colors are not a good idea;

    1
IBM (until recently) forced its sales force to wear a
    Blue Suit...because it works.
    Blue=trust. Red=power.

    2
People with red/white colorblindlness ( about 3% of population )
may have trouble seeing things in read against a white background.

On a postive note, they now have a LOGIN buttion at the top.
Only took them 10 years to get that right.

    HI All,
Although this color will not gonna change any of the functionality of the site and people will gonna earn like what they were earning before, but what I think that this new color will not attract newbies so much and they will not get registered on this site and certainly this is direct loss of business.

I hope they will change the color soon.

Me too. I had several pages with "For your safety, the order form will look like this:". It would have been nice to know they were split testing so I could have removed that first.

They should make it so that it's customizable. There's no way that they can make 1 page that will convert for every site. However, if they'd let each of us choose the colors individually, they'd get better results.

the colour is so boring but i believe with time both the vendors and the affiliate will start loving it.

What is happening to us now is just the principle of change.

We all know that change is constant and always good but hardly adapt to it.

So, let us create adaptibility mind to the change.

The business blue have a sort of comfortable trusting mellow affect on the senses while some colors make you slightly uneasy especially while paying for something with your credit card online. Thats been my experience.

I'm very glad that Clickbank is split-testing color schemes. They're only trying to improve conversions for all parties involved.

Also, it should be noted this is a similar color scheme to Amazon's checkout. So they can't be that stupid.

I especially dislike the home page, with its red and orange colors. I don't mind the payment page as much. In fact, mine just came up blue.

It's good to see that they appear to be split-testing. I have a phone meeting with my CB rep and this was on my list of things to ask them about.

It's very disappointing though that a change like this was not communicated to vendors. As others have said, I have a screenshot that explains the checkout process and this will definitely hurt conversions...

Why change it if it isn't broke?

Additionally, the little favicon they have going on now looks very similar to how some browsers display an unsecure connection alert. Red is not a good way to go CB.

one thing that we have to constantly keep in mind is that... if sales go up, clickbank (and vendors) make more money. The opposite if sales go down.

clickbank are doing this with the benefit of both vendors, affiliates and themselves in mind. it is important to remember this whether the move is correct or not.

let me know how conversions are going with the new order page.

    regards

    Simon

  • I agree with the Creator of this thread. I've read a lot of research on colors and their use in marketing. And it doesn't line up with the new look. Hopefully they actually did do some testing, or they are testing now and if it's a dud they will be smart enough to make the change. But not all companies are smart. So what can you do really?

I guess we'll know in a couple of weeks/months if the colors suddenly go back. Perhaps there is a consultant somewhere that told them to make this change.

Just curious, but, how many of you have actually tried to buy something and said to yourself "Well, I was going to buy this, but now I'm not going to because they have red(or any other color) on the checkout page"? I can honestly say I never have.

      It's not linear like that.

Especially in markets that are not so internet savvy it's very important the whole process is congruent and flows smoothly.

People may be set off of the sales course by the slightest change or thing that gives them pause.

I understand it sounds sort of implausible but I have tons of split-testing results that tell me colors DO matter in a huge way.

I agree w/ LB - If I'm looking at a sales page, and decide to buy, I'll get spooked if the payment page is drastically different from the sales page. They need to make it more customizable. - Or they need to pick a color and stick w/ it. I know many vendors that have designed their websites around the old payment page colors just to improve conversion rate.

You have to understand though that they are the retailer. Its kind like its their store, they can display the payment page as they wish with no need to tell anyone.

With thousands of transactions per day it should be a quick test and hopefully they've reverted to what's most successful.
