I want to make a restaurant search and review site, where to begin?

Hello warriors, i am interested to build a site where people can look to see if there is a restaurant that sells a certain kind of food when they are traveling, i would like it to be possible for customers and restaurant owners to both submit entries and a rating and review system for the food.

How would I go about building a site like this with no web design experience?

Wow. So you have no experience and want to make the next yelp or fouesquare? Why not start with something smaller first to get your feet wet

it wouldnt be as complicated as yelp because it is only listing 1 type of dish, so it would be more simple

It would be to your good to find out first if anybody wants such a site before you start off building it.

Its an interesting idea, there are a couple of things I can think of that might be good to know first.

How many people are searching for this?

What would make them pay attention to your site instead of some other more authoritative site?

How you are going to get the information to put on your site?

How are you going to get money (if that is your goal)?

I agree with eljeffe77, if you want to make the next yelp your going to need to know some web design and programming skills. That's not something they make an ebook for. Start out with something like a food reviewing website and state where they can go to get that food. Good Luck!

Decide your scope . . . are you going to review every restaurant in the world, or limit by geographical area, cost, quality, interestingness, style of food, or what. Make sure you know how you're going to monetize the site (unless you want to do it as a free resource). Then do some research into relevant keywords (use Google Adwords Keyword Tool), pick a domain and hosting, and get your site up.

Since this is likely to be an ongoing project, i.e. more reviews coming continually, WordPress is ideal, since it is designed for blog-type activity (although can work fine for static sites too). One of its many advantages is that you have lots of good free themes to choose from, so choose one which has aesthetics which fit your chosen range of restaurants (you can pay someone to design a new header-image), and make a start.

Make it easy for visitors to find what they want . . . so search, index by location, type of food, cost, ambience, or whatever.

    Good luck

    Chris

Step 1) Figure out how yours is going to be different (and hopefully better) than the tons of others out there.

Step 2) Make sure you have enough money for development (guestimate between 10 and 15K to get going)

I'd say take on a smaller project. It's very hard to make such a large jump like that considering your experience.

I’ve just found your idea and have to say that your plans are wider than Napoleon had. You need to hire the web developers, designers, marketers etc. because it can take tonnes of time to make it all by yourself.
Start from a small town - to make a test, and then try to expand. But frankly, I think it's not a fresh idea and it would be desperately difficult to defeat competitors.
