Too competitive for a new niche site?

I want to start a new project and build a niche site with the goal of being the go-to site in this niche. I'm not sure which niche to target so I would like to hear your suggestions.

Here are some things I would like to integrate in my site:

- blog
- business directory
- classifieds
- forum

Any other suggestions are welcome :-)

So far I had the idea to go for a specific car brand, but all big car brands already have popular classifieds, forums, blogs etc. All over Googles SERPs. Do you think it would still be worth Diving into one of these car niches?

If you have any other Ideas of niches to build an authority site in I'd love to listen.

For me, if a market is competitive that means there's money to be made. The best thing you can do is test the market with some facebook ads (create a fan page) and see if you get any engagement then take it from there. You don't have to rely on Google for traffic, there's a lot of ways to get traffic without Google.

Anyway, as soon as your site gets good traffic then Google will rank your pages simply because Google follows people and if people share and bookmark your content then that means it's valuable and you'll get ranked high.

Just build the site, if there's competition then there's money to be made.

I sometimes like to relate the online industry to gold/oil extraction or anything that falls into that group such as oil or silver.

A saturated niche is like a known oil field or gold mine. You know that it exists, you know what is in it and you know that it is possible to make profit because someone else is already doing it.

The problem with saturated niches though, such as the car market is that there are already key players in it whom are reputable, which has its downfall, it is much harder to gain traffic and become an established player in a saturated market. This is similar to how two mines could cost different prices if one is proven to have a known quantity of gold, and the other one has not been prospected, so no one knows whether or not it will have a quantity of gold.

As a result, if you are planning on going into a saturated market, such as the car market, I would recommend only doing so if you are passionate about what your doing, and have a decent amount of knowledge in it, otherwise it will be very hard to be successful.

Hope this helps, and feel free to PM me with any further questions.

Thanks for your thoughts! I think you're right with your comparison and if I join this niche it will take time and effort to earn and get traffic. The niche I thought of is about a special Kind of oldtimers and I own one of those, so yes I am interested and also have some knowledge about it.

You could get involved in it and maybe have your success. The first thing you need to go out and do though is research. How many people are interested in this niche? How many established players are there? ect.

I personally do not know anything about the niche you are interested in so I couldn't answer those questions for you but you need to determine those answers and see if it is worth your time. Remember, a successful blog/website answers a question that people for (search engines as the prime example). There are other things your website could answer (a place to meet / a way to communicated), so you need to decide what you are going to do with your website and how it will work.

        Best of luck!

No doubt knowledge of the market and passion can be very helpful. But in very competitive markets that you call "saturated" it is going to take more than that.

I've always believed that the very best way to fight lots of competition in a market is to position your business and products in such a way that they don't directly compete with other larger already established brands.

If you can't be compared directly ("apples to apples") then the advantage that the already established market leaders possess is no longer relevant.

      I hope that makes sense.

      Good luck to you,

      Steve

        Hi Steve,

that's exactly the kind of advice I was looking for here. I know that there are big site out there on the web, but if I could manage to be different in some way there's still room for me.

I don't want a site which only lists the different models, has a forum and a classified section (of course that's nice, but not unique) I want to offer something that makes people remember my site and come back, share it on social media, participate and interact on the site and all this crazy stuff!

Right now I'm still not sure how to achieve this. One idea I had were user submitted images, because I know loads of car owners like to see their "baby" showcased somewhere. Could be one element...

If you want to be the "go to site " you are creating an authority site IN A NICHE, not a niche site. Its a good thing to aim for, bt it is going to be difficult. Get some amazing content up before marketing your site, and people will respect you for it.

As fellow Warriors have already expressed, going into a competitive niche is a (good) thing to do, because you're simply going to tap into the same oil field as all the others out there.

Regarding what you should have on your site, I (highly) recommend reading a book called "Getting Real" by Jason Fried (the guy who built 37 Signals).

It'll get your mind laser focused on moving fast and launching simple, then scaling up as needed.

If you wan to venture into the car niche then yes there will be a lot of competition but that also means that there is a lot of money to be made. Its just like fishing, if there are a lot of people fishing in one spot then there is probably fish there. Usually there is enough to go around. Automotive is a multi-billion dollar a year business. If you even had a percent of that you would be richer than you could even dream of. That's why if you know a lot about the niche and you can provide value there is money to made. Whether you think you can or cant you are right.

I'm sure there's money to be made and I know the interest in this niche really is HUGE because as said before I'm involved there myself :-) It's kind of a hobby niche where people are really enthusiastic about their cars and everything surounding them.

The only thing I worry about is the already exisitng sites. I know how to use WordPress to build a prett nice community site with all the functions I mentioned above, I am able to market it in some way and so on. My only concern is that there are already classifieds, forums etc. in this niche and they are really big sites.

What I would like to have is a unique angle that makes me different from them, and that's where I'm struggeling. It's not the motivation or anything like that...

Although I do not market very extensively in a "car" niche, I do so in dozens of similarly competitive niches. In my experience, forget about trying to rank in Google within any practical timeframe; SEO professionals and deep-pocketed marketers often dominate, leaving nothing but crumbs for the average person. However, one can by-pass such intense competition by marketing directly to targeted prospects using what many consider to be "classical marketing methods" (ie old).

For example, within any highly competitive and commercially viable niche there are thousands or perhaps even hundreds of thousands of online/offline publications read by tightly targeted enthusiasts. Such is the case in car niches - especially the classics. My modus operandi over the last 16 years or so has been to build my business from other people's lists. Specifically, writing articles and syndicating them to niche publications who already have done much of the heavy lifting with their loyal subscribers.

This marketing model is described in a very old ebook (but also still quite relevant in today's marketing environment) which I frequently recommend: Turn Words Into Traffic, by Jim and Dallas Edwards. IMNSHO, there is no better conversion factor greater than an implied endorsement from a publisher who regards your articles as acceptable to their readership audience. This method can draw in floods of targeted prospects within a few weeks, in contrast to months (if ever) of getting ranked by Google in heavily competitive niches.

Sometimes old things are what works best. It's not necessary to jump on every trend that crosses your way. Thanks for the recommendation :-)

You are missing out on one thing, social media.

There isn't a big deal if there are car brands everywhere on Google search, if only you can get yourself in front of a reasonable amount of that traffic you will be able to partake in the share of that niche revenue.

It pays to offer a really better service than those of your competitor that already exist.

I guess you're right, because until now I haven't had much luck/ experience with social media. But a passionate hobby niche could be a good target for sites like Facebook, Pinterest and so on. I think this is a must have to start a successful site, but for me it's a hard bite 'cause I didn't do such a project before.

Anyway, thanks for the reminder :-)

don't worry if other big company already got a popular classified about it(car brands) , you try to offer them which they don't offer people, try to look out the site and find the gap holes, and you create your own forum or classified to fill the gaps make it exclusive, be true ,the end user must be satisfied with your work so this has no chance for the user to search for other solution if you follow this you can be king in your niche even others be top in that
