Finding Images for a Commercial Blog

Hi everybody,

I'm about to start a commercial blog and I'm trying to find the first couple of images for my posts, but the process got me a bit confused. There are several issues:

1. I found a pic I really like on Flickr and just created an account on Yahoo to get in contact with the person who owns it (pic is not free for commercial use, so I need to contact them). However, I don't see how I can get to the pic when I'm logged in at flickr, and neither do I get where I can log in when I have found a flickr-pic over google search. Maybe this is really stupid, but I don't get it...

2. I found another image I really like on google, but it doesn't show up under the "free use" search results, but only under the ordinary results - so I guess it's not free to use? I see that several small blogs have used it though, must they all have done so illegally? How can I find out who owns this pic?

3. What are the best ways to find images, free or not? Any favorite websites?

I would appreciate any help of this fine community a LOT.

There a number of sites where you can get free and small fee pix for commercial use.

Morguefile.com
Kozzi.com
sxc.hu (although be careful here, they are now owned by Getty)

I have purchased some CD's of nice photos that I use often and there is a site called wpclipart.com that has a lot of images on it in the public domain.

Lots of people do use pictures without permission, but it is getting to be a riskier and riskier thing to do from a legal standpoint.

The way I see it, many images just cost a couple of dollars anyways (at least I hope so...), so I'm not even starting to steal them. My blog should become big and it's worthy that little money. But amazing to see the restricted images pop up on all sorts of blogs...

  There are a lot of photo licensing sites that offer millions of images that can be used on a blog. Be sure to read and obey their license terms. Prices are very reasonable, especially if you buy a subscription - otherwise they'll be in the range of $1-$3 per photo. Some of the ones I use include

I use this website The Leading Source Of Free Stock Photos - stock.xchng you have to make an account but it is free.

Seems to provide a decent selection.

I used to schlepp all over cyberspace looking for free images. But I found out that the sites offering the freebies usually didn't have anything decent. Sure you can occasionally find something but I found it a lot easier to go to a site like depositphotos or one of the many other paid sites and find exactly what I need. You might pay anywhere from $2 to $7 for just the right pic but that's cheap compared to the time you save browsing every so called free pic site.

I have resolved my little Flickr problem. I really like Flickr. Of course, it depends on what you are looking for. Maybe I should have mentioned it: I'm looking mostly for drawings/paintings/etc as opposed to to photographs. My blog is about fiction writing and the fitting style will be to pretty much completely leave out photos.

Any original, witty work is good, also looking for drawings or paintings of famous authors. Can anybody tell me which ones are the best sites for these?

Btw, the guy on Flickr wants 25 pounds for his collage, I'm still talking to him about which rights would be included. Does anybody have experience in buying on Flickr?

Would you rather buy some image for 25 pounds or use it for free and give credits and a link underneath? I guess a link distracts from the article and looks somehow ugly, so I almost prefer to pay.
