Kindle Countdown Deals: Your Thoughts?

Hey All.....

Amazon just came out with a new promotional tool called, "Kindle Countdown Deals."

Here are some of the benefits of Kindle Countdown Deals:

1) They're time-based: Not only does this give you more control to decide how long the book is discounted, but the time remaining for the promotion is visible to customers to increase excitement for the price discount.
2) Customers see the regular price: It's easy for customers to see the great deal they're getting, as the regular price is included on the book's detail page, right beside the promotional price.
3) Royalty rate is retained at lower prices: You will earn royalties based on your regular royalty rate and the promotional price. As a result, if you are using the 70% royalty option, you’ll earn 70% even if the price is below $2.99.
4) There's a dedicated website: Customers can easily browse active; Kindle Countdown Deals at www.amazon.com/kindlecountdowndeals, providing yet another way for books to be discovered.
5) You can monitor performance in real-time: A new KDP report displays sales and royalties at each price discount side-by-side with pre-promotion performance, so it's easy to compare.

I am curious to what other Kindle publishers think about it.

I've been wondering when they would do something to make Select attractive again with those free promos not working so well anymore.

There will be a few good things you'll be able to do with it.

The FREE promotions was so very effective for a while, but then lost most of its power.

Glad to see them coming up with new options.

I still think the free promotions will be more powerful than this new thing.

I think the fact thousands of people now know your name is extremely powerful, but you don't see the benefits of that until later down the line.

It's also nice giving the book away in certain places so you can get a few extra reviews.

This new idea might get you a few more sales, but will it be enough to make up for the money you're losing by lowering the price? Maybe for some people.

I think it WILL be great when you can periodically send out a scarcity-based offer to your list.

I am planning on running a test.

You either choose to run the normal 5 day giveaway OR the Kindle Countdown within a 90 day period for each book. From what I have read, you cannot do both within the same 90 day period with one book.

So I will take one book and run with it on the 5 day promo, and the other using the Countdown deal. It will be interesting to track the results.

Yes, I'm doing this to. I have one starting tomorrow. I like the bigger cut (70%) for royalties.

This seems like a good idea to me, I'm going to jump on it and test it out with my next short story compilation.

I think this will turn out to be a good idea, but right now needs more testing and feedback.

One nice thing is you get to keep 70% even if your price is below .99.
I am testing it this week.

Yesterday I read an article about the KDP program because I have just published my first Kindle ebook and I wanted to know if it was a good idea to let my ebook remain in this program more than 90 days.

By reading this long article I understood that you make more money thanks to all the promotions organized by Amazon, than after the promotional period ends.

So, it’s a wise idea to accept all kinds of promotions. I will try this one after the first 90 days. Thank you for this information!

I will be testing this out on my ebooks as well. I think it is a brilliant move on Amazon's part. They're doing everything to accelerate Kindle ebook sales while offering options that keep the authors very happy (especially with the royalty rates).

I think this can be great if you have more than one book in the same niche. It allows some powerful combinations.

        Indeed.
I'm sure it's all a matter of creativity on our end. It should also do well with some seasonal titles.

KDP Select is good as-is, but it also lacked certain interaction, making it feel a bit bland. This feature just brought new life to the program by allowing you to play around with a broader set of options.

It might also be a positive for authors with a series. Rather than pegging the first in the series to $0.99, say, peg it at the same price as the others but run regular promotions down to 99 cents (or lower). Maybe run it the first five days of each 90 day period (about 4 times per year).

I'm thinking that timing the initial publishing so that one could run the promo for ten days straight, starting on Black Friday, might be worth a try. Too late for this year, but worth keeping in the back of your mind.

Another idea - how about five days starting Black Friday plus the five days leading up to Christmas for those who put off buying stocking stuffers, etc.?

I remembered you today when I found interesting information about selling ebooks at different places besides Amazon (because you made this question in a previous thread) and I also remembered this thread about Amazon's promotions.

It seems that the best option is to promote your new ebook thanks to KDP Select for a while, and then distribute it everywhere.

Here is the information I found:

Is it worth my time to publish other places than Amazon?
