Location Independent

Some of you probably aspire to work from a place you visited once while on vacation, or just travelling while you work a bit here and there a long your journey. Perhaps, even from home and not having to go into your shitty 9 - 5 job anymore, .

The question is how do you see that happening and what will it take?

My ambition: Is to make a relative figure to be able to travel and eventually stay in SE Asia. I am not a huge fan of Asia, but I know there's a bunch going on down there and personally it is extremely favourable fiscally speaking. Eventually I have an idea country I want to settle down in BRAZIL.

Anyway, by staying in SEA I'd like to just focus 100% on my online ventures. And build my income into something substantial, equivalent to what I could be making if I worked in Finance or Management Consulting. I still want to do well enough to save for retirement and buy some property!

The original dream was to build something to work on while studying for a Masters Degree. That is comparatively similar to being Location Independent in my opinion.

What would it take for you to become mobile and free to travel while working on your business...?

  • Here's the perfect thread for you that's active right now in the forum:

    How I Went Having Less....

    Good stuff to digest!
  • I saw this thread dude, and I said that it was kind of withstanding any actual meat beside the philosophic "follow your dreams, and dream with fellow like minded dreamers".

I was hoping to spark some elaboration via this thread

That's rich, coming from someone who's signature link leads to one of the worst blogs I've had the misfortune to read.

Ryan, you've sure got some learning to do.

    • What sort of elaboration do you need??

The OP in the other thread says that he makes his money through dropshipping and ecommerce stores, that's one way of doing it.

I get to live in Thailand mainly through affiliate marketing, site creation for clients and launching the odd product.

I know another guy here who offers a video creation service that does really well.

I'd say the majority of Internet based business can be location independent.

I'd start off by working on 'attitude' before hooking up with any entrepreneurs in Asia though

  • Kudos for setting a vision OP. Location independence (LI) means different things to different folks.

For my biz partner, it's freedom to move around Chicagoland without restriction. Personally, I won't be satisfied until I move around the world on a whim.

I resonate with your view of SEA -- there's a lot to like: rock bottom cost of living, friendly expat community, friendly to business, tons of internet entrepreneurs to network with and keep the motivation up. On top of all that, easy to keep a clear mind when you want. I plan something similar -- SEA for a year or two, followed by a Spanish fun spot, probably Rio or Barca.

Business is booming here in Chi though, so the urge to jet set is dying a little each day.
  • Sorry can't short attention span... Especially when it comes to nonsense threads...

FYI - Brazil is not in SE Asia :p
  • One negative about Brasil is the banking system, which is far worse than most 3rd world countries. For example, in England the amount you lose changing to foreign currency is around 10%, in Thailand 1%, in Brasil, 66%. Maybe I was unlucky, but be sure to check carefully before considering Brasil!

  • Steve C: Yes you can make money drop shipping and e-commerce. That's not elaborative. I was specifically curious of any avenues that brought him to the point of success he achieved over the summer. He obviously worked his ass off he mentioned he had put in a lot. None the less, sharing more is always nice in some cases, that is all.

Working on attitude? Do you mean one should or needs to have advanced interpersonal skills to entertain dialogue with entrepreneurs in Asia? ....

HeadStart: I totally agree with you. I love having a vision that so many others are living. The freedom to travel and not be fixated. The work doesn't scare me at all. Sometimes I think about it thoroughly and it just seems so possible. That fuels me to put in work for sure!

Haha, cheers man! On Barca or Rio! I suppose I'll see you there!

salesguru: thanks for pointing out all of that useful info. Does that mean I should bring a map?

Chris: I definitely agree that brazil has it's ups and very low downs lol when it comes to anything, bureaucracy is never far! Taking into consideration the lifestyle you have there compared to anywhere is second to none! Although that is a different topic. Banking hopefully won't be a huge issue, as I'd like to just have to withdraw when needing money and use cc for everything else..

    • I realize you want to travel the world while making money online... but what you're basically asking is for a blueprint to make money online, and that cannot be addressed in one thread. You will have to do that research on your own.

Being geographically independent and "travel-enabled" is, in a nutshell, based on one core principle: making money online in a rather passive way so you don't need to be locked to your computer any specific day (or week) of the calendar.

You cannot possibly ask in one single thread for the specifics on how to achieve that ultimate goal. That's basically what the entire Warrior Forum is about. You will need to target down your questions significantly.

PS: As a final note... as you move deeper into this game, you will realize that running (and specially growing) an online business is like any other business: time consuming and requires lots of work. So, while you can totally be geographically flexible and relocate wherever you want every few months, you won't be able to backpack around as you merrily wish, or else you will be neglecting your business and its sustainability. I speak from first-hand experience.
  • Well done OP for having a plan to go and check out some other countries.

I'll warn you though that if you're not a fan of Asia, don't come here. Take a step back and think where you ARE a fan of. If you're a guy then the obvious answer is to ask yourself which country's women you think are the hottest.

  • It already happened for me.

Here's what you need to do to make it happen:

    1. Make online income / passive income from somewhere.
    2. Go travel / live abroad.

How can YOU get there? Follow a proven online business model, pick a good niche and work hard at it.
  • Haha chicks are always on the radar!

I am working on my blog and podcasting as source of personal interest, it's fun! As far as income is concerned, that is a real doozy: I am setting up a profile on Odesk and plan on taking as many tests as I can then working.

Secondly, trying to build and audience and then maybe build my own blog network / and or play around with high PR sites..

    • Hi we just connected on Twitter right?

Of course you can become location independent. And Southeast Asia is cheap. It's a matter of how much you're willing to hang in there past the subconscious fears we all have that try to stop us from doing anything new.
  • Hi Erika,

If you mean fears of going, that's definitely not the problem. I'll write as I drive to the airport if it's time to go! haha

Unless you mean the fears of committing to projects or the subliminal issues and challenges we face in building our businesses. Then yes, that's definitely an issue for people. Facing the unknown unknowns on this journey is scary. There is no guarantee that success will reach any of our doors.

But it certainly won't if we give up!
