I read a post on here not too long ago that said that you need to provide some sort of a service if you want to succeed in this IM stuff. I know that most IM'ers usually begin by blogging and monetizing through advertisements and affiliate links.

I know that others work to build a list and then "earn the trust" of those people on their lists, so that they can make recommendations for affiliate products.

However, what I'm uncertain about is what exactly is the "service" that is being provided by the IM'er?

For instance....

Someone gets put on my list because they came across my blog/website (which has advertisements and affiliate links on it). That person then downloads my free eBook which puts them on a list.

Okay...so how do I "build a relationship" with them? How do I continue to "give" them things? Write email articles related to what my website is about?

This is the part I'm confused about.

Any suggestions?

    Hi

I am not sure if you are asking about one aspect of marketing right now. Your headeline talks about providing service but your description talks about list building.

As far as providing service is concerned, you first need to find that you are good with. It may be graphic design, coding, word press site development, content writing etc. These are just a few of myriad services you can launch. Once you know what you want to do for others, promote your business and get orders for the same. Once you get the order, fulfill it and keep growing from there.

For information regarding link building please do some search here you will find a ton of great content. Two people I would recommend you check out when it comes to list building are Igor and Anwesh Rath. These blokes now their stuff.

    Hope that helps...

I will look more into list building.

However, from what I've read so far, all of the successful list builders on this site always talk about "building a relationship" with those that are on your list and earn their trust. I'm guessing that this is accomplished by constantly keeping in touch with them and offering them some sort of value (the "service"). This is as opposed to constantly try to sell everyone on your list stuff, which would more than likely be perceived as spam by most people.

One of my favorite quotes of all time is this:

"The amount of money you make is proportional to the amount of value you bring to the marketplace"

The way you do that is simply by becoming a more valuable person.

Dedicate yourself to becoming a student of the game of marketing by reading books and listening to audios by people who make a lot of money.

If you want to provide a service that people will pay you for, simply work hard at getting really good at the service...whatever it is....simple as that.

Receive that message, and nothing will stop you.

To "build a relationship" you give them value, i.e. write free info that they find valuable. That makes them trust you, and so makes them much more likely to buy something from you. That is the point of having a list.

As for "having to have" a service, that's one option. It is one way of monetizing content, but a relatively minor percentage of internet-marketing. Other methods of monetizing content are products (instead of services), and affiliate marketing, neither of which involve you providing a Service.

Providing a service can be a good way to make money. Services for IM would include things like content creation (article writing etc.), SEO (on-page, backlinking etc.), website creation, WordPress install and customization, graphics, programming (PHP etc.) and other stuff that IMers need.

First of all, you gotta have a targeted people on your list.

Secondly, find or create a product or service that solves the needs of your target list.

Building up relationship with your list is just about sending worthwhile unpromotional newsletters to your list consistently.

A lot of marketers start with providing a service because it's an easy way to get in to business, so if you have a talent for writing or creating awesome graphics then it's something you can get started on straight away whilst building your list.
