Beating shiny-object syndrome (and my personal introduction)

First, I wanted to introduce myself. I've been lurking for a long time now and finally decided to jump in and join the fun. Looks like a great community! I've been making a little money online since 2006. Now I'm trying to ramp things up and make a full-time income.

Anyway, I though instead of coming here and asking for something right away, I'd contribute something, as limited as it may be.

I'm a very impulsive person and, like many IMers, I am easily seduced by shiny-object syndrome. Especially when it comes to making money online. I've learned to avoid this by following one rule:

1. The 48-hour rule. If I see something I want, I wait 48-hours. This gives me time to really think about it. 9 times out of 10, I'll decide not to buy something after 48 hours.

I figure that's enough time to really think about something and let the emotional appeal and excitement of a shiny object wear off.

Is this rule perfect? No, but it works for me and I've saved A LOT of money by following it.

The KEY to beating the "Shiny Object Syndrome" is to FOCUS on being like a postage stamp......"Stick to one thing until it has arrived!"

    Welcome Brad

You are right - a cooling off period always keeps money in your own pocket.

Unfortunately it doesn't work on some things - such as the Playstation 4 and Tag Heuer watch I have my eyes on!

I apply a similar method before declaring a place my favorite restaurant/park/hotel/resort and it even applies to people. The "second time around" rule: never state how excited you are about something, only admit that you are willing to give it another go, and if the second time around things are just as great, then you can label it however you like. It is similar and works great in preventing disappointment.

It's not a bad start, but the fact that you need to wait 48 hours before deciding is not the heart of your matter.

For example - I decide to go into the widget business. I've done research and found the best way to monetize on this particular business is through adsense.

So, my focus is going to be on building a site using adsense and learning all about adsense in every way possible. I'll focus on looking to only purchase things that bring me closer to using adsense in the best way possible, and things that might optimize my website and traffic sources for such. My other focus would be on the widget niche itself, and wanting to have the best sources for information on the subject so that I might be an authority.

You sound like (and I could be wrong) you are looking for random money making opportunities.

If you have a specific idea on your niche first, it will become very obvious on what you should be buying and you'll get quicker than 48 hours to make a decision.

This is why I believe the niche needs to come first, and then honing down how to best monetize it.

Waiting is OK, but sometimes it may stop you from purchasing something that you really need.

I like to ask this question: Is this something that I can implement into my business immediately?

If not then I pass for now

You need to get your plans in place so that it doesn't take you 48 hours to decide whether something is needed or not. You should only have one goal you are working towards at any one time and anything that does not help that goal progress is not something you need. So you should be able to tell right away whether a product or service you see is needed.

    Welcome to the Warrior Forum!

When I decide to purchase something, I do it after making a research. I think a lot before buying whatever.

However, I was not this way in the beginning of my adventures online.

Now I’ve learned my lessons (and I keep studying) but in the beginning I made many ridiculous mistakes.

Wish I had found this forum at that time…

Some of the best sales copy appeals to your emotions so if you can allow your sound, decision making to kick in as you read the benefits and just let your cooler head prevail as you assess any product/service, you will really come out much further ahead.

There is no push button setup so you have to realize that most sales copies are all about the benefits and not stressing the W-O-R-K required which is inherent in any business model/system/venture. So you have to temper the fun emotions evoked from the sales copy with the required work ethic that you'll need to have in place.

If you are not sure what to do, don't do it.

So waiting for 24-48 hrs seems like a very good idea

I always try to ask the question "Is this WSO/product going to help me with my current business I am working on RIGHT NOW"

If not I just leave it. There are some really great WSO's at the moment about off line marketing to business's. However, they have nothing to do with what I am working on right now. So, no matter how good they are, I pass.

As has been said before the real key is to become "laser like focused on a business" and concentrate on that for all its worth.
