Clicks but no sales, need some website feedback

Hello marketing veterans, I hope you can help a newbie out here.

I seem to be having the same problem a lot of people here have with new retail sites. I can generate 50 to 100 clicks a day with my Adwords budget, but they are not converting to sales, at all.

I have a sense that the product line and prices are viable since I have had sales on Amazon without even trying, but the overhead there at my low volume is crushing any profit. I am marketing to a niche that is pretty specific but it has resulted in traffic response (they just don't seem to like my site).

So far I have repeatedly trimmed my ad copy to try and shed the casual clickers, and really tried to get just people who are ready to buy (so I thought) by including prices in the ad, free shipping, etc. I have also been trying to use a blog to drive some interest, and posting in forums as well, with some success as far as traffic but alas no sales. Analytics says people spend 3 to 5 minutes browsing 5 to 7 pages per visit.

Can I invite you to have a look and give me some feedback?
The retail side is here and the advice/blog side is here.

Be brutal, I am determined to try harder before throwing in the towel, so I am open to any and all criticism. Color scheme? Prices? Just a lame product idea? I don't have more than a couple of thousand invested so far am prepared for the worst (up to and including the fact that it may simply not be a good idea to continue).

Thanks in advance, great forum!!

I'm thinking you might do better to establish yourself through a place like Ebay first. Get some sales going there and then keep feeding people over to your website in the coming years.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Thanks for the fast reply and advice! I was doing EBay for a while but it's even worse than Amazon with fees and seller-unfriendly policies (feedback policy for one) so I walked away. I may have to reconsider that and just bite the bullet for a while to get some traction. I would still love to figure out what is turning people off at the site in the meantime, it's becoming an obsession trying to tweak it, lol.

          Hi,

Here are a few quick thoughts,

          1) When I went to your estore there was no product that was visible to me above the fold. There must be some product related to what I am searching (based on the ad I clicked) or some pointer stating that there are some awesome products on the page.

          2) Above the fold part of your page is precious real estate which is looking clumsy to me and compels me to move away from the site without scrolling down.

          3) The images are not clear. High quality sharp images go a long way in attracting customers to stay longer on the site and eventually buy.

          4) Have you checked your abandoned cart data? I have not tested the ordering system, but can tell you from experience that there might be a few abandoned orders because of system glitches. See if those can be converted by personally getting in touch with the customers.

          5) Have you heard of Zopim? Take a look at it and see if you can make use of that to improve conversions...

          6) You have a ribbon on the page running vertically on the left side stating adventure, that is distracting in my opinion.

          7) Please look at having a cleaner layout and background that attracts attention to the products.

Hope some of those points are helpful to you.

          Cheers

              Heres my observations:

              1. Very small product range, this doesnt lend much conviction that the site is an authority in this niche.

              2. Confusing tab layout, tabs both horizontally and vertically, You should just have tabs in one direction, across the top of the page.

              3. Very little content on the site, gives very little - no information about the site, company, products and the people behind it.

              4. Colour choice not really appealing, I would suggest a white background to the site.

              5. The whole site gives the impression of someone selling stuff from their garage and who used free software kit to build the site. Its just not very professional looking.

I would concentrate your funds on improving the site before spending more money on traffic to it.

              Hope this helps...

    * Give a short explanation about the quality of your products and more information about them in the beginning, before presenting them to the public.

    * Find an editor for your articles.

    * I didn't like your colors and the feeling I had when I opened your links. Use white.

The site appears overly focused on wanting people to buy without providing visitors any incentive to do so. You need to provide a good user experience. Stop focusing on what you want visitors to do, and think more about what your visitors want your site to do for them. Put yourself in their place and think about what you would want to see if you were the visitor.

First, remove the "Free shipping today only". The fake scarcity and coupon code make it look cheesy, especially when they are placed at the very top of the screen. Plus, that is taking up prime real estate at the top of the page. Those are also the only words you have bolded. It makes it a little too obvious.

I don't know what your reasoning is for the coupon code, but it would likely come across as more professional if you simply stated that you had free shipping. Even then, only have it on the store page (or maybe in the sidebar).

Instead, provide some information on what the purpose of the site is. What is it your visitors are looking for? Whatever you have at the top of the page should let them know that they have come to the right place.

The blue-green background under the text makes reading hard on the eyes. Change it to something a little more off-white.

Overall, the text is a bit too small, especially the post titles.

The posts need some images and better formatting

Though, I think the blog is completely wrong for the site, anyway. At least as a home page.

The images in the sidebar linking to products is unnecessary and a waste (your selection isn't that big). Put in a real sidebar. Have links to the articles there rather than expecting people to scroll through a blog. Blogs rolls are good for certain things, but not really great for stores.

The navigation at the top is confusing, as it changes depending on the page you are on. They need to stay consistent. Anything labeled "home" should take you to the home page. On the store page the link for the store turns into "store home", and the link to the home page turns into "blog and travel tips". Confusing visitors like that does not build a lot of trust.

You can keep the blog roll, but put it in its own link in the navigation, and get rid of the word "blog" and just call it "travel tips". I would still have a listing of "top posts" or "recent posts" in the sidebar to attract attention.

The home page should focus on what the site is there to provide, along with, maybe, vacation images, and/or links to important pages/articles on your site (with explanations as to why a visitor may want to visit those pages).

The store pages has almost no description as to its purpose. You need some info up there. What are you selling, and why would they want to buy it?

You suggested pack lists page has a heading listed twice in different sizes. Remove one. I would also suggest removing the "First a list of" "next, a list of". They make the sentences much longer than they need to be. People tend to scan pages so you need to make them as concise as possible.

The listing itself is just a wall of text. Too small, and too scrunched together. Bigger text and better spacing, especially between the bullet points. Maybe bolding on the items themselves so that they stand out from the descriptions.

As others have mentioned, the store itself is rather light. Adding more products would help. In the meantime, your best bet is to give the appearance that the store is not the focus of the site. The site is to provide visitors with information they need to have a better travel experience. The store is just there as a convenience. Build up the rest of the site with quality content, and they may stay and shop.

I really can't say if the items are a good idea or not. I have no idea of what your customers might be looking for, or expecting. I also have no idea if the prices are good. You could try some split testing with different prices to see if it makes a difference.

    1) Change your headline. It can be much better

    2) Put your text on a white background

    3) I like the header graphic

    4) Your right sidebar isn't appealing

    5) Something about your site just makes it look bland

I am wondering- does it have to be specific for cruises? I think these kits would be good for any vacation or roadtrip. They make things easier because you are getting everything in once place so you won't forget to pick up that essential item. These might make great gifts for people who travel often for work. Also, are there are specific for families traveling with kids? Those might sell big.

I would try to stress the key points that these kits make it easy to pack, that you won't be on a vacation without essential items and the utmost comfort that you deserve, and that the kits ca save you a lot of money compared to buying the items individually. Now you can have all the comforts and conveniences of home away from home.

Do you have a social media presence? I could see these getting popular via Facebook especially if you did occasional giveaways to a lucky person who shares your page. This would also be a good place to share your blogs.

Echo the sentiments of a few others in here. Get rid of the blue container - it makes the text nearly impossible to read - black on white (or as close as possible) is the way to go.

What I see that is good is you are working on your branding. EXTREMELY important for an eCommerce store. You need to differentiate yourself from the competition in order to justify your higher prices. I think that 'Cruise Comfort' is fantastic, keep working on the branding!

The Bad - Your flagship product - The 'State Room Comfort Pack':

      Cabin Comfort Pack - Deluxe

Is TERRIBLY represented. The image is horrible, and it looks like a pile of garbage instead of the 'luxury' item that it is supposed to be!

Here is what I am thinking if I am looking at that item as a prospect (judging the image you have):

Wet ones? .25 cents. Charmin tissue? $1.00. Surge Protector? $4.99 Some funny looking plastic Bags? What do I need those for??

Harsh, I know, but get what I am saying? As a prospect, I am seeing less than $10 of value here. Why would I pay a store I have NEVER done business with $60 for $10 worth of stuff?

Of course, I know that stuff is worth more, but unless you are really really digging into it, it really doesn't look like it is. Make the value of what you are providing immediately apparent to your prospects, otherwise they will leave and shop at eBay or amazon instead!

You need more content pages do that they can get indexed. Maybe get some backlinks to your website as well. You have none. It looks thrown together. Something on the first page needs to jump out and tell the reader what the website is about.

I think that you can just tell that the site is new or not used much. There are only 2 reviews...

The sidebar is kinda strange, it says "Our Products" but there's nothing there. And I would integrate Twitter or something on that sidebar so people can see that the site has a little "life" to it.

And yeah, change that light blue to white as the main background, the pictures of the products look really good to me but they look odd on that blue background.

If the site seemed more ALIVE or ACTIVE I think your sales would pick up...

For the retail part, I would make the product descriptions more personal and user-friendly, to determine readers to actually imagine the items and underline why they are worth buying, even for people who have no idea what they are.
For the blog, I noticed the posts are dated at over one month distance. Although they seem well written, they do not actually answer a need. Who's going to read a post about what reviews to pay attention to. Instead, I would focus on posts that talk about the product categories and how they can make one's life easier, all in the format of "how to...", "What is...", "Why....", "10 tips/steps to...".
This way, the visitors would stay longer on your site and, hopefully, buy. Also, try getting traffic through Ezinearticles, Squidoo, etc., as it is all targeted traffic, more likely to turn into paying customers.

This feedback is like gold to me, I see some definite quick-hits to help in the short term. I will have to give some sincere thought to breaking away from the cheapo godaddy shopping cart site and maybe getting a pro involved for the design and articles. I'll do the low-hanging-fruit changes in the meantime while I decide whether this is worthwhile.

I can't thank you all enough, what an awesome resource this forum is
