You can install something like PPC web spy and you'll see which kw are being used/bid on.

You can look at a web pages page source and see their keywords sometimes.

You can go to alexa.com and search to see a sites kw too.

Google has such a tool. Do a quick search for it on google. You can also use the keyword tool. Instead of entering the keyword, just enter the site you want to spy on and voila, google pulls up all possible keywords your competition is bidding on

You cant' beat this and I have a lot of paid tools!
      It's fast, easy, and free.

I use the one in my adwords account so I don't know
if this external one limits your results.

Just grab your competitors url and put it in there.

I just did this for a customer on Thursday and got
back a few hundred great phrases.

Have no idea what kind of site it is, but you could check the source code of the homepage from your internet browser and look for the Title, Description, and keyword meta tag.

Try the suspect words you find there with google, MSN & Yahoo, and see where they rank.

yes spyfu is great make sure to watch Michael Jones video tutorial on spyfu's site. Keywordspy is another great tool it has a free trial, but the pro membership will allow you to export your competitors keywords to text or excel file.

These are both free tools to use and will provide great info for you. Also make sure to watch the video tutorials for keyworspy and you can also spy on affiliates with it.

The video tutorials are great and walk you right through using them.

Blaise is right - the Google Keyword Analysis tool is all you need.

In addition to grabbing keywords from a competitors site, it can tell you how many searches are actually made for any keyword you're interested in, and in any country or countries you want to market yourself at.

This allows you to focus on keywords likely to generate traffic, rather than chasing after 101 useless keyword phrases.

      Well, actually, no it isn't.

In addition to grabbing keywords from a competitors site...
The "Web Content" option of the Google Keyword Tool just looks at whatever website you enter and generates a list of keywords that are relevant to its content. That may give you a clue as to what keywords your competitors are using, but it doesn't tell you the actual keywords your competitors are using, which is what the OP wanted to know.

OK, so aren't the words that Google gives you in the results
of that search what Google sees and is reporting?

So aren't they important to Google?

I am not saying that this is the end of your work, but it does answer the question, the actual keywords he is ranking for is in that list in most cases.

Unless 1000's of people are keyword bombing the site.

I will admit that you don't know the exact words that the
competitor is ranking for, but they are in the list.

So take those results and run them through Google search in quotes
and see if your competitor comes up.

I do have one question MarkMilan, that is how do you do it?

Sure, but those results don't necessarily include all the keywords for which a particular page is getting traffic. For example, if you search for ".pdf" in Google, the top result is an Adobe Reader page. If you use the Google Keyword Tool's "web content" option on that Adobe page, Google doesn't suggest ".pdf" as a keyword. If you search adobe.com on SpyFu, it will tell you that they receive organic and paid traffic from the keyword ".pdf". Since the OP asked for "the keywords from which the competitors getting traffic and rank well in search engine", it's clear to me that the Google Keyword Tool doesn't specifically show those keywords; sites like SpyFu do.

So take those results and run them through Google search in quotes and see if your competitor comes up

Along with being incomplete, since not all keywords that a site gets traffic from is listed by the Keyword Tool, that method would also take a load of time.

I agree with the spyfu recommendation. But just open up a site's source code (right click and choose "view source code") and look for "keywords". That alone can give you some good keywords for your niche. Then just go down the list of the top 10 websites that are listed in google for the keyword you are after and find out what their backlinks are. Many will surprise you...

I get hits from keyword spy on my sites quite frequently showing up in my stats.

Also, on most sites you can just right click and choose page source and see what keywords they have in their meta tags.

    Cheers,
    Zac
