How to Sell ObamacareEpicFail.com Domain Name for BIG $$$$$?

Hey Warriors!

My hosting provider recently told me how a friend of his sold two domains (dog.com & petpotty.com) for between $800,000 and $900,000. Whoa!

Well, I was watching the news while purchasing a new domain name the other day and had a eureka moment. I checked and ObamacareEpicFail.com was available. So, I picked it up. With the 2014 elections centering on Obamacare, I'm hoping I have a winning lotto ticket. Timing might come into play since I'm guessing whoever buys will want to start using it in early 2014.

My question is what are the steps for selling this sucker for big money in a few months??? Create a blog? Use Adsense? Contact the major players (Democrats/Republicans) directly? Use a domain name auction site? Build a strong following first?

Or, am I dreaming here??

Any and all suggestions are super appreciated! You rock!

-John

Do you understand the difference between dog.com and obamacareepicfail.com? If you do you won't get your hopes up too high.

How many people are searching on the phrase "obama care epic fail"?

      Exactly . . . . . . no one.

dog.com & petpotty.com are actually premium domain names and worth money. Yours is a pretty crappy domain name and probably would be hard to give away even if someone believed the premise.

  • I will not buy obamacareepicfail.com even for $10, let alone big $$$$$.

I think you should not buy it, but it is up to you.

Wow John - great idea - I just picked up ObamaCareEpicFail.org and ObamaCareEpicFail.net - can I sell those to you for $10,000 each? I bet you could get $50k for each of them easily!

Okay Okay - sorry I"m being an ahole, just because you have a long tail domain name that SOUNDs funny - doesnt mean it's worth a dime.

Build a site on it, get traffic and revenue to it - THEN you can probably sell it

The only domain name you'll be able to sell would be like: obama.com or ObamaCare.com

That's too long tail and too broad to be worth money on its own

Actually, you might have something here... Ignore the nay-sayers and rude people... If you were to establish this site and make it an outlet for people to post about their experiences with obama-care, you might be able to start enough buzz to get it rolling. Once it is, it might not be a bad idea to put it on sedo or flippa and see if you can get something for it. The key will be getting massive ammounts of traffic and exposure to the site. If you're looking to sell it, once its established, it might not be a bad idea to contact a few of the tea-party/libertarian/republican establishments and send them your proposal..i.e. you have an anti-obabacare website with X ammount of members/followers.. The political machines are ALWAYS looking for more people to influence. Make it easy for them and you'll get paid.

Wow. Another epic fail. They're breeding like rabbits around here. Must be something in the water.

      John,

This forum can be harsh! No one tells you that when you join. The first thing I will say is that please do not take it personally, this forum can, at times, be as helpful (if not more) that is can be harsh.

Secondly, hats off for being entrepreneurial in nature, but as the others have stated, I do not think your venture, as is, has any merit. After Google's EMD update, lessened the value of domain names that were an exact match to a search query. Not to mention, the people most up in arms about Obamacare are not the same people who have "epic fail" in their vocabulary.

I agree with everyone else: that domain name is too long and too esoteric to garner big $$$. The most valuable domain names tend to be very short and either encompass a broad range of products or ideas, such as dog.com, gay.com, bicycle.com, or EqualRights.com.

If you had managed to snag something like Obamacare.com, HealthReform.com, or Healthcare.com, you'd be in business.

But all may not be lost. I'm certain that health insurance affiliate marketing is right around the corner, and you might be able to use that domain for that purpose.

I honestly don't think the domain itself is worth all that much. It's too long to be in the same league as dogs.com or something.

That said, if you gave it a little TLC, posted some good content, relevant ads, etc., you might make a little money on it (not $$$$ though). I think most people will be interested in the traffic the site gets, and the quality of traffic.

    Good luck!

Here are the sort of domains that go for big bucks:

Digital Assets for Sale: Top Level Domain Names Go to Auction

    MutualFunds.com, Suit.com, Tie.com, LuxuryBags.com, EqualRights.com, etc.

ObamacareEpicFail.com is funny, but it's too long and too esoteric.

Thanks for the feedback! Positive and negative, that is exactly what I was looking for..."whether to," "how to" and "where to."

I'll make it a video site where people can vote, link it to Facebook and slap on Adsense.

I'll report back if anything comes of it.

    ...from my jet. Hahaha!

I recommend you to create a website or a blog with your domain and display adsense advertising, you can get easy traffic from youtube with good videos, or sell your domain, i think you can sell it over $10k

I think there is value in the domain its just

that the content will have to be valuable too.

Good concept and thinking for capitalizing on a buzz.

You can try to sell it. Make a bunch of "lolzy" humorous images, put it on a Tumblr style blog. Like stuff that you can see getting retweeted. Lots of pop culture, pictures of cats, some stuff with the Avengers/Arrested Development/etc. Maybe Kathleen Sebelius/Lucille Bluth mashups?

You put some jokes together, TCOT's spread it around, suddenly you have something viral and somebody buys the blog or some old guy gives you a gig somewhere. The traditional flippa rules of having to monetize the site don't apply in this situation, just get some eyeballs. Don't know if it will work but if you want a project you can try it.

EDIT: If any of your jokes have facts attached to them, source various rw blogs.

Ya doubt that anyone willing to pay good money for that domain would not suit your target market... "epic fail" not great in my opinion but who am i to say?

I would suggest listing it on domain marketplace
