Is it worth hanging out with the target audience on a large forum which does not allow link to the squeeze page / or any link in signature ?

It depends really, if you can build a reputation of being an expert then it could be beneficial. You could find threads of individuals having troubles and PM them to offer your help.

I may get banned anytime If I message them the link myself, it would be considered as spam. However it would be good if people ask me the solutions themselves first, then I believe I can send them the link. But that way the business won't be on autopilot.

This is my first month in IM, already made a giveaway report myself and a squeeze page, written 1 week of autoresponder messages and now looking forward to send traffic to my squeeze page. So I thought i should start by forums first because it is free and I would be able to know more problems in my niche and I don't want to get bankrupt by sending out paid traffic for now.

Can you please tell me some more ways to get free traffic ?

      Thanks

    It definitely is.

If you take active part in popular & informative threads, show your profound professional knowledge in some sphere, help people with their issues, etc. that will help you build good relationship with influential forum members.

If you manage to win support of those guys, you can benefit from it in many ways outside of forums.

You can send them your contact information

to get around the link problem.

I doubt it would be regarded as spam.

Speaking of no link in signature, I notice a lot of these posts don't have any links in their signature... Any ideas why?

It only worth it if there is a lot of discussion in that forum and you can be clearly seen as an authority.

But it will surely take a lot more time to get traffic from there without a signature link.

If you are good at networking you could create a Facebook Page and try to get them as your Facebook freinds . after having build a good relationship of networking , you can try to get them in any type of contact, if any is allowed. in forums you should use your Facebook name, so they can searche after your name

I've thought about this many times before,
so this is a good point! I would imagine so
since many forums will allow you to have
a profile created. Often times on the profile
you can have your links displayed.

I'd also suggest using your actual name
in the forums especially if you hope to
brand yourself. No signatures, no worries....

    By contributing consistently (keeping good
SEO in mind) search engines will rank your
content. Of course, the content should be of value.

Ya really signature traffic shouldn't be a reliable source of traffic for you so don't worry about it. If you continue to contribute to the forum, ask questions when you need, answer them when you can, then the connections you make will be much more valuable than the tiny bit of traffic you can siphon off here...

I'm such a selfish marketer lol... i dont participate on forums that dont allow me to promote something in a signature. Waste of time for me really. I dont care about this form of brand recognition in a niche. My true fans are on my subscriber and buyers list. These are the people who like me and pay me money... every month too.

Linking directly to your website is really not neccessary, If only you provide value and you have a unique and easy to be found name, they can probably search you on social networks.
