How do you know where visitors come from?

by creative 15 replies
Hi, warriors!
I have a website for my offline business which I promote in different places online.
Is there a way to find out where visitors to my site come from?
I think those sites are called "referrer" sites.
That information would be very useful for me, because it would let me know what sites are the most effective ones.
I had a look in google but I couldn't find anything....
There must be an easy way to do this.
Thanks a lot!!!

    Hi,

Like Matt said, use Google Analytics. From there, you can click on 'Acquisitions' and it will tell you where the users come from.

As Chris And Matt have said Google analytics will give you the information needed to find where your referrals are coming from. Here is a link to the official Google analytics website Google Analytics Official Website ? Web Analytics & Reporting

if your referrer is from online world, that's possible to be tracked, but if from offline world that's harder, or if it's possible you need to invest more money....

Yeah you can definitely track where visitors are coming from with Google Analytics and you can use it to do lots of other useful stuff at the same time.

An other solution which seems to get a lot of attention when it comes to analysing website traffic is get clicky. My mentor uses that more than anayltics.

All people here know that Google Analytics is the best solution for your question, even you will know your visitor activity on your site, such as how long time they stay on your site.

With so many votes for Google analytics - allow me to throw another one in for consideration.....

Just my own personal preference - Awstats. It's in with the hosting package anyway, tells me "at a glance" what pages people have viewed, where they came from (refering URLs) and what key words were used from search engine referrals. Other stuff too. Sure, it's "quick and dirty" though that's all I need.

    Another vote for Awstats!

Webalizer is another good program for noting referring sites. Like Awstats, it's probably part of your hosting package.

you need to set up google analytics with your website. just some code you paste in then it will show you all the details of where people came from, how long they stayed, demographics, etc

    Hi,

If you want in depth tracking, Google Analytics
will let you place a script code in the background
of your website (or pages) that captures all of
    the details you want.

If in depth statistics is not neccessary for you
then just consider one of the many ad tracker
providers out there. Also, the Google URL
shortener (goo.gl) will give you some referring
    information.
