If you don't change, you'll be left behind

"Thankfully, I keep all of my emails, otherwise I wouldn't know what a fraud you are. I heard you on a radio interview saying how you do not support a certain method, because there are better ways. I have an email from you dated August 2010 where you say the method works just fine. You talk out of both sides of your mouth, you creep."

That's a message I woke up to a few days ago. It made me giggle. The method he was talking about absolutely did work and work well in 2010. Times change and it no longer works well, now. I explained this in my reply and went into detail about why it worked then, but does not work nearly as well today. He responded with, "Whatever dude. You can't endorse something one day and change your mind."

Yes, I can. And so can all of you.

It is vital to continuously follow marketing trends. Methods that worked a few years ago may not work now. It's the evolution of the technology we work on. The Internet changes. Sure, basic marketing skills have been the same for hundreds of years, but the way we deliver the message and collect the leads changes very rapidly, these days.

Don't become a dinosaur, like the guy that emailed me. Keep up with the trends, learn emerging technology, and understand that you can and should be changing your minds and methods, when appropriate.

Not only are they dinosaurs, but too dumb to know it. They are the ones who'll go extinct.

All kinds of things "used" to work, but the only thing that really stays the same is that things change.

My wife should have been an Internet marketer. She used these exact words almost 28 years ago when I stayed after work to drink with the boys. 28 years later we are still happily married. :-)

Good advice here. I might agree with that person if you were STILL promoting the old method (continuing to sell an outdated ebook, not revising an old blog post that gets a lot of traffic, etc.) But since its clearly a 3 year old email that was only sent once, it sounds more like a grudge.

Typical! And unfortunately, someone that blind is probably not going to make it far in the marketing world. If they don't understand that what works now might not have worked in 2010 and vice versa.

It's like the old days of spamming backlinks to pages won't rank you in Google any more.

Sadly, you get all types. There is a large number of people who want you to SPOONFEED them success. They don't expect to think. They don't expect to put in the effort.

An ENTITLEMENT MENTALITY is the biggest barrier to success many people suffer from.

I think that person was more shocked by the fact that the method became obsolete in such a short period of time. It can be a bit overwhelming to see everything change so fast, it's almost like someone is constantly pushing the fast forward button on things.

Still, it should be exciting that there are so many new methods to look forward to. I just wish I had the time to explore them before they become outdated too lol.

I agree with you that being able to change to be able to succeed in the changing world of internet marketing. Also, the guy that sent you the email it would seem is unlikely to succeed with the attitude he has.
I think it is an understandable he thinks that way especially about IM as he probably has got jaded by the sales letter promises of easy money etc that some marketers use. Its then easy to think everyone is tarred by the same brush. Hopefully he'll come round for his sake.

99% of the time its better to evolve with your business, but believe it or not, sometimes its better to stay the same. I find it very annoying when some big companies constantly keep on changing the design of their products, the UI of software etc - if the old one worked perfectly for what its designed to do, why change? Ugh, microsoft word -.-

  • It's true, like any successful business you need to adapt with the times. Its the core skills that make you successful - creativity, motivation, how to scale, how to manage a team of outsources, networking.

Just because 5 page EMD adsense sites went out of vogue doesn't mean you give up. You take what you learned and adapt it or focus on different parts of the cycle.

I'm 99.9999% certain that the guy that sent you that e-mail is still busy sending out negative e-mails to people and blames his bad luck on others. People like that don't listen to reason and he proved it by his reply when you actually took the time to explain yourself.

Which leads me to one of my favorite quotes:

"You can be a victim or you can be rich, but you can’t be both. Listen up! Every time, and I mean every time, you blame, justify, or complain, you are slitting your financial throat."

So he is not going to use your 2013 method and from his email you can tell he never used your 2010 method either. I seriously doubt if he is using ANY method. Anyone that has the time or even the inclination to go back and find a specific email from 2010 is clearly not focusing on running a real business.

the way an entrepreneur survives and thrives is by embracing change - and being brave when change is necessary - change is scary, after all.

the truth is most people are deathly afraid of change - that's why they are not really entrepreneurs and generally give up when the going gets tough.

not everyone is cut out for that uncertainty - the knowledge that in order to evolve we have to keep moving. Many people like constancy - change to them is too stressful, I think.

Actually, most of the people that research or buy products on doing business online, don't actually try what they buy. When I was selling WSOs, I would often poll my customers on how well my method, software, or training was doing for them. The most popular answer was, "I haven't had a chance to start yet." The funny thing is many of those people that answered like that would buy my products again and again.

I try to encourage my customers to use what they buy and even flat out told them, on many occasions, not to buy if they were not going to take action. However, that is like telling a gambler not to gamble or a drinker not to drink. Some of these folks are just addicted to buying products. Others think the mere purchase alone will make them successful. And others just want to know how a trick is done.

So, in response to your post, He probably has no idea what still works or what doesn't, because he never took any action.

lol I swear I think some people just love to be miserable.

I had an unsub the other day because he said he feels like I'm trying to be an "everyday woman."

Hmm well okay - I work, I take care of my kids, I'm a single Mom, I pay all my bills, I do the grocery shopping, I do carpool and all school activities.

And yeah, I share HOW I juggle it all in my emails sometimes because THAT'S WHAT I TEACH - Internet Marketing isn't just about building a business, it's about managing it. And most manage it poorly and get paralyzed.

People unsub for some of the weirdest reasons. And even after you explained - he should have "gotten it" but he was stuck in his tinfoil hat mindset. Oh no! An evil dark guru is out to get me!

I have an email from you dated August 2010 where you say the method works just fine
    I am confused

Did you sell him an old method that worked in 2010? or is he finally getting around to a product he bought in 2010? There is always two sides to a story.

I agree methods can be good one year, and bad the next, but why is that guy so upset I am sure he knows that

Dude is obviously upset over something else, if he is nitpicking on things you have said. I have emails from 2010, but buried behind 19 thousand other emails. Looks like you may have a stalker on your hands
