Guest blogging vs press releases?

Hi, this is Max. I wonder what works better to build authority in your niche and get a lot of targeted traffic.

In both cases authority sites endorse you as an expert to their audiences. So you build trust and recognition. Endorsed traffic converts in leads and sales better in fact.

To me, press release is more profitable. This is a fast and easy business solution. Let's say you wrote an awesome book based on your expertise. You just pay the same company to have a press release about it written and distributed in shortest time. You reach thousands of social media outlets with no problem.

With guest blogging you have to dance around authority blog owners trying to build relations. Spend too much time reading and commenting their blog posts, communicating with them, making content for them. Your content gets rejected, or you're forced to write for them on the weekly basis, they ask you to rewrite something, tell you what to do, etc. It seems like you work for them and they're your bosses. Meanwhile, you can't work for more than only 3-5 authority blogs at the same time as a guest author, it's too exhausting. So your circle of influence is too small.

Hiring guest bloggers is a very bad idea. First, it's too expensive. Second, they are not you and sound differently. Even if it's a ghostwriter and people don't know it's not you they're interacting with wrong person.

I recently discovered a blog, I don't know how old are they on the market, but I've found some interesting insights I personally used for my business.

Here are two articles which refer to the topics you asked about: online press releases and guest posting:

    - How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Guest Posting Campaigns

    - How to use online press releases and be Google-proof: Interview with SEM leading expert Joe Laratro

Both of the techniques you're talking about are frequently used for SEO. If done properly, they're effective, if not, you can get penalized - that's why you need to do some research before you start your campaigns.

I guesss, without a shadow of doubt, guest blogging is more effective than press releases. I spend more time on guest blogging. Mostly getting good links on high quality relevant websites. They are worthy and you can get a lot of traffic from one quality guest post on your website.

Have you tried press releases to be able to compare? I mean paid press release marketing. Free press release submission sites don't work. They're garbage.

Matt Cutts issued a video that addressed PR. To make a long story short, don't do it. Google is cracking down and PR links are definitely on their radar. I would do guest blog posts if I were you. However, I would do them with an eye toward BRANDING and ALLIANCE BUILDING more than anything else.

  • Correct me if I am wrong but there are far more sites to guest blog than to send and pay for a press release so surely more posts in the long run will get more traffic and authority follows as a result?

What do others think about what I said. Be nice please.

Yes, millions of websites to guest blog on. But you have to build relationships with their owners and work hard creating content to regularly guest post at least on 5 of them. Or you wanna go from site to site submitting guest articles? Perfect, instead of having a press release featured on a thousand of news sites - write a thousand articles and get them approved on a thousand sites that accept contributed content. You will definitely save time and money , lol.
