Top reason most newbies fail at online marketing?

One of the biggest reasons why folks fail to make any money online is because they run around in circles hunting down the latest shiny object rather than concentrating on just one or two methods and then becoming really proficient at them.

There are loads of methods to make money online, such as blogging, SEO, email marketing, article marketing etc and they all work. However they all require effort. Many newbies might go and write a couple articles, submit them to a couple of directories, make no money and then go around saying that internet marketing does not work.

The key is to decide on 1 area of IM that excites you the most and then become good at it because the more you love something, the much more likely you are to learn more and attain mastery over that topic.

This is what has worked for me. What do you guys think?

    I completely agree. You need to be consistently doing 1 or 2 things, and promoting 1 or 2 things, and stick to it for at least 90 days and some!!!

    Agreed! The reason why most people FAIL to make any money online is not only that they are hunting every shiny object and lacking focus. But also they aren't seeking out the "Right" people. I think it's extremely crucial to be mentored or following the right advice, since most crap nowadays is either re-hashed, outdated, or stupid lol

    I too completely agree with your decision. Posting articles in article directories or email marketing or SEO is not only the way of sustaining in this field. You need to have huge patience, hard work and sincere dedication to succeed. Failures are the pillars of success. So, keep on trying and trying and finally there surely should be a new bright, sunny days to be bloomed after fierce full, stormy night.

    I think the key to failure is assuming their are 'methods' at all when in reality -- its just all business. If they would just scrap these ideas of making money with adsense and start solid companies that provide products and services and do even the most simple marketing they would get results.. instead they run around trying to get rich fast for no reason with no talent to support it.

    Making Money is serious business. You need a business model to follow. Research, Focus, Perseverance, dedication are prerequisites to any business. I would suggest stick to one and gain mastery. Business is built over the period of time and not overnight. Loads of patience and perseveramce is also needed to succeed.

    Yes i agree, I remember coming back from my first IM conference and being completely confused and bogged down in information overload was trying to learn everything at once,chasing a magic bullet for success.I gave up and started again quite a few times before i made my first Dollar.

    Funnily enough it was through adsense that i first made money so i would not be so quick to throw that model to the scrapheap so easily.Especially for someone new and not so good at the technical side of things.I totally agree that product and service creation is a worthy business model and one that i have invested my adsense profits into developing for myself.I no longer use adsense myself but iff it wasn't for that first monthly income from it i might not have been able to generate the funds to build a ''proper'' business plan so to speak.

    I think beyond just lack of focus is lack of understanding how to make serious enough money to really make it worth it.

    When I first started, I found a bunch of ways to make one time payments of $5 or $10. Those were ok, but they honestly didn't excite me much, and I couldn't scale what I was doing. I had to work hard to keep searching for a business model that would bring in better money, be something I enjoy, help people, and wouldn't take tons and tons of time. That's not an easy mix to come by.

    People are chasing those shiny objects because they think (or hoping for) that "new" thing will be easier to achieve results with... Especially since each one of seller of those "new" shiny objects describes its product as such...

    On the other hand, there are people who are making money selling those "new" shiny objects, so for them those "new" shiny objects are actually good... That's why we have tens of new WSOs every day, along with new products on other networks, although 95% of them are selling the same, old, well-known and reharshed information in new & shiny packages...

    I think it is a double edged sword:

    You need to try different things until you find a method that feels good for you, trying not to spend a fortune in the process. After you have found a method that brings results and feels comfortable to do, only then you focus on that.

    I see newbies running around buying tons of WSO's and asking how to make $10/day and I see newbies doing ad sense for 3 years with no results. Those are opposites but equally bad for your internet business.

    Another big issue is the lack of investment: time or money. People want Made-for-you solutions. $97 WSO which is build for you. Then you can complain to the seller how lousy the product was when you didn't make a dime of it.
    At the same time people are too afraid to risk $100 for paid traffic to test different landing pages or sales copies.

    Internet marketing is easy and hard at the same time. It is easy because it is dead simple. And it is hard because it is so easy.

    Personally, I failed massively in the beginning 'cause I was getting excited over every single thing that was out there. Had a subscription with JVZoo Daily Pick and WSO of The Day. Bought most of the things that caught the eye and in the end had loads of methods to make money online but dunno where to start...

    In the end, I got everything straight; got laser targeted in what I did and finally made my first dollar online.

    Using the Internet to market is a HUGE challenge for newbies just because of the fact that you have not only so many different IM products staring in their face but you also have the highly distracting nature of all the commonly used time wasters that you have to be disciplined to shut down (Facebook, email, etc.). IM requires a lot of self discipline. If you're the type of person that goes crazy as soon as you arrive in Las Vegas then you might find that temptation is a tough enemy to squelch in this environment!

    In my opinion, newbies fail because they've got the newbie mindset where they don't want to take any kind of risks. But the thing is that if you don't take risks, you don't make mistakes. And when you don't make mistakes you don't know what works. And when you don't know what works, you don't want to take risks. You see, it's a vicious circle.

    I failed TERRIBLY at online marketing simply because I joined the wrong business. I saw a lot of hype and hoopla but it was a sucking money funnel. I was going to conventions and paying boocoo money for solo ads and never made a dollar. Joined a different company and now I'm making money every single day with not even half the effort. I would say getting into the right business is KEY to any sucesss.

    because i've been there for years, doing something here and somehting there, but never won a living!!!
    Untill i focused on one thing and one thing only, now i'm living my dream, and i say to every newbie, don't give up, you should do the things over and over agian, so you can have the needed experience to start your own IM live =

    #1 reason would be having no mentor or teacher. IM is a tough skill. Trying to learn how to be a successful IM on your own is like trying to be a successful piano player on your own. GOOD LUCK. It's damn near impossible without structured guidance. Sure, there are always exceptions...but not everyone is born beethoven.

      Uhhhh...I would seriously doubt the validity of the teacher. If you cannot inspire, motivate, and enthusiastically share your passion with a student...what kind of teacher are you?

      A teacher who doesn't encourage, is like a salesman who doesn't encourage. That's like a salesman saying, "Hey, I'm just here to take your money...it's not my job to encourage you to give it to me."

      Being an instructor in my offline life, I have so much passion for what I do and I'm able to teach it to anyone. Not everyone can be great, but surely everyone can improve, learn, have fun, and enjoy success with it.

    As usual, a lot of common sense and on the button information and I would like to add something that I heard soon after I started in the MMO arena and was suffering from a lot of the issues discussed here.

    Basically the advice I read and found hugely helpful was:
    1. Find a process, concept money making theory you like the look of
    2. Set yourself a small profit figure (say $50)
    3. Commit to following the strategy until you reach your figure
    4. When you have done this you will have the information you need to decide whether that strategy is for you (did you enjoy it, did you find it easy, did the money come in quickly, would it be easy to upscale, etc) or whether it's worth trying something else.

    It's a deceptively simple idea, but then again some of the best ideas are.

    knowledge is power in this industry. Most newbies fail because they don't have the knowledge to be profitable.

    NO serious marketer is letting the cat out of the bag outside of their own little circle on how to generate profit.

    Newbies need to plug into a mentor that actually wants to help them, not just take their money.

    I agree with you... mostly. The shiny objects are a problem because they make you lose focus but there are other reasons. I think newbies expect to make a LOT of money EASILY. They are not prepared to work hard and when an obstacle comes, then they look to the next shiny object, and sooner or later they give up.

    I do not think it is necessary to love something and focus on it. Personally, I do not much like Facebook... until I earn a lot of money with this traffic source.

    In addition to focusing on a method, newbies should also focus on a traffic source at the beginning and stick with it until they master it.

    To follow one method only and/or find a mentor is the key to success for newbies.

    I agree with you. But those shiny new objects are so addictive especially when the going gets tough. They all seem to promise a better way than the way you are doing it now. Yes, having the dedication to stick to one way and seeing it through is very important to achieving success online.

    I think most newbies fail because they expect miracles. Because they do no get informed well enough, they believe you get money the second day, the latest.
    Another reason is that they do not take into account the risks. So they are surprised things do not go the way they want and give up.

    Many newbies tend to follow processes that are not repeatable and this results in failure. Secondly they do not stick to one proven method and make it work, info overload and shinning object syndrome also cause a lot of damage.

    Totally agree with shiny object syndrome. Partly it's because newbies will typically sign up to 30+ newsletters, all screaming loudly about must have IM products, services, techniques... so they keep hopping from one system to the next, and to the next still without succeeding in any.

    I definitely agree! Most newbies will EXPECT a quick return on any time or money spent. They think that everything is a matter of days or minimal effort is usually going to help. Time may be of the essence, but real money is made over time.

    Unless you bring something to the table when you first come online to make money you will struggle badly. If you have no existing business skills or your completely technophobic you really are peeing against the wind.

    Knowing what to focus on is the hardest part. I was totally focused, willing to work hard, had money to invest but put all my energy into the wrong things. Oh well sht happens as they say

    It really is hard to know the right way to go when you are buried under an avalanche of shiny object offers every day, that for me is the newbies biggest challenge.

    It's been a long time since I've posted, but this thread caught my attention in a moment of ADD between tasks.

    Here's my take...

    The reason people fail is because they, in large, fail to identify and eliminate the true constraints physically limiting their progress towards the goal of creating a consistent and stable income online.

    I've done a LOT of thinking on this, and if you sit down and do a bit of critical path analysis to actually define what is absolutely necessary for success "consistent profit" online to precipitate and then you look at what people actually think they need to do and thus end up doing - they are two completely different things.

    What makes things more convoluted is that those that do succeed tend to attribute their success to things are not really the true mechanisms for their success without knowing it so the marketplace, in following said successes, ends up chasing unnecessary and in many cases inhibitory objectives towards the realization of their ultimate goal.

    I'm tired of these threads. The reason why most people fail at IM is because they're no-talent a$$ clowns who think that the internet can make up for their lack of skills or marketability. You need skills to pay the bills with IM! (writing, editing, coding, design, filming, networking, specialized knowledge, networking, etc). You also need to develop your skills and the skills that you need to run an online business, but don't have. OR, you need a budget and the know-how to outsource what you can't do yourself. You also need an operating budget. You also need an advertising budget. You also need to keep up to date with the trends and news and adjust accordingly. You also need to build a business network. You also need to be creative. Most people don't fit these demands and so they fail. Most people who come into IM can't do anything else...even flip burgers, yet they expect that they can make 10 million in 10 months. L-O-L That's why most people fail at IM.

    totally agree! need to pick ONE thing and master it. don't go jumping around from FB marketing to Youtube marketing until you figured one out. if you really focus on the task at hand and get good at it then this is where you will see progress. most people don't stick with one thing long enough to even learn it. to really learn something it can consist of buying several different courses on the same subject instead of just one and calling it good. you can learn a lot of tips and tricks from a lot of different people within the same space

    To sum everything up... the top reason is lack of action...

    Somehow newbies find a way to buy product after product without ever actually taking action on anything, then they just end up buying another product to avoid never really doing anything at all...

    I'd say that cycle is the biggest reason people fail online, and it's what leads to the biggest problem in our community (information overload)

    I think most newbies work their butts off for weeks and then finally get 1 sale. And then they reflect and say, "I did all this work for 1 sale? This internet crap sucks." Then they quit, and go and sell on etsy lol.

    They dont understand the mechanics of online marketing nor the math to make everything simple - and to gain their money back from initial losses.

    Ok so like many others..this was me....running around in circles...lack of focus...although I haven't achieved success yet, I know I will soon. Why?
    1. Focused on one area
    2. I made the shiny object syndrome dull and boring
    3. Found info for free on here to help me in my area of IM
    4. Found someone who is successful at what it is I want to do, and copying him, actually them. I follow three people...all cut from the same cloth, and very successful at what they do.

    Now I can truly see success with clarity...

    Don't be afraid to fail...use it as a lesson learned.

    is already profitable. Then work that niche. If you run around like a chicken
