Looking for a good hosting service that works well with Wordpress

Hi,
I am looking for a good hosting service that works well with Wordpress and is reasonably priced. Would be using my own domain and a custom theme. Any suggestions and/or comments?

Much appreciated.

Hostgator, and I know a lot of others here recommend the same. Great up time, great support, great prices.

There's a hosting offers section here: Web Hosting Offers

How many sites are you looking to host? What features are you looking for and what's your budget? Do you have a location preference?

I am looking to host one site for now, but might add other sites down the road. Don't really have a budget but am looking for something reasonable that has a good compatibility with Wordpress. US based preferably.

Most shared plans should fit your needs. I'd recommend staying away from the "unlimited everything" however. I'd contact a few web hosts and ask questions to gauge their responsiveness as well.

I'd recommend Hostgator. All my sites are built using Wordpress and they work well with it.

The reason why I recommend it is it's support. Excellent support.

I think you'd better edit your link from avoiding affiliation; otherwise, infraction gained.

OP! Stop listening to Hostgator promoter anymore because they're not like before. If you've found your desired hosts, you could do some research about the review in Google, especially, in WebHostingTalk to see their reputation. You could also check Shared Hosting Offer section there, too.
Note: Don't forget to do your homework about researching the reputation of that hosts before you decide to host your site with them. Your site is your asset!

I wouldn't recommend hostgator at all...increasing problems every single day since EIG bought them out.

ones I would recommend, even as direct competitors are webhostingbuzz, stablehost, hawkhost, mddhosting, namecheap etc. Hostgator isn't anywhere near what they were years ago, its just another EIG brand now.... Do your research and choose wisely.

Wow. Lot of negativity against Hostgator.

I've been using them since 2009 without any issues.

I hope I don't run into any problems now that they're being run by EIG.

(Off Topic) Anyone know an easy way to migrate an entire cpanel to another shared hosting provider?

yes, your new provider should be able to do this very easily given they know what they're doing. Unless you have root access, you can only upload files and import a database; you cannot restore a backup.

    HostGator.

You can literally install Wordpress in about a minute and the support is pretty decent.

    BlueHost is also recommended.

    My order of preference:

    2. Hostgator - but a lot of controversy surrounding them at the moment
    3. Bluehost - owned by the same company who just bought Hostgator

If you are specifically looking for only wordpress hosting provider, you might go with wpengine, though their price seems too costly but it will worth it.

I don't think that whether or not a host offers "unlimited" bandwidth is a reasonable factor in choosing hosting. Mainly because, while companies will promise unlimited bandwidth, no company is going to actually give you unlimited bandwidth.

They'll give you Unlimited* bandwidth, for sure. But you won't get Unlimited bandwidth.

      * = a lot of restrictions that will prevent you from getting unlimited bandwidth.

Think about it, if anyone could really give you unlimited bandwidth, wouldn't high traffic web sites like Google.com, Wikipedia.org, and Yahoo.com use a Hostgator plan that advertises "Unlimited" bandwidth? Ignoring other reasons based on security and other technical concerns, why wouldn't those sites go with an "Unlimited" bandwidth hosting company?

Also, you must realize that most people who sign up for "Unlimited" resources hosts, probably yourself included, don't actually need a lot of resources.

Also, going by the content found at the page linked to in OP's signature, it's obvious that OP is a millionaire (see his page titled Introduction-How I made my first Million), so there's no reason that OP should restrict himself to a low cost budget host like Hostgator.

Lots of hosts offer "unlimited" bandwidth and "unlimited" domains. It's not that big of a deal.

Hostgator will do fine if you dont need very much resources, I used them for 1 year with no issue and excellent support but it seems to be that when you are getting nice traffic they start bothering you to upgrade your account, I am know using hostmonster vps and I am very pleased with it. Great for Wp sites and also cheaper than HG

Funny, since both Hostmonster (former Bluehost subsidiary) and Hostgator are both the same company/host now -- EIG. Those are just brands, to hide the real host.

      You've been duped.

I can recommend HostGator. It's a pretty good service, and WordPress installation is quick & easy. I'm not sure about the custom theme, though - I use StudioPress themes, and it works fine.

However, there was a problem with a theme with my first WP installation. All I had to do to fix that was re-install WordPress, which takes a couple minutes.

If you need to go dedicated WP, then you can choose WP Engine or Synthesis.

Hostgator performance has deteriorated in the last 1 year. All my websites hosted on hostgator are very slow now. You can get much better hosting at a much lower price. BTW, you can get some real good price from hosting vendors in the next few days (Black Friday).

I'm surprised how different the experience with Hostgator seems to be for different people.

I've been with them for years (not always without problems) and right now I'm not having any problems, and when speedtesting my sites they are the fastest from my 3 hosts.

I'm also hosting with the often recommended Liquidweb / Storm and for several months now I'm having problems over problems. After they moved my server instance my sites have almost daily downtimes and they aren't able to fix it. I've made a gazillion optizations, yet the sites are down again and again. Other servers handle ten times the traffic without downtime.

So I'm actually considering moving my sites from Liquidweb to Hostgator, which seems ridiculous given the reputation of the 2 companies.

That site appears to be a reseller of Liquid Net Limited's services (liquidnetlimited.com). It also appears to be your reseller site because the name associated with the domain record is the same as with the site in your sig. Could you please try to be a little more transparent?

BTW, you might want to fix those broken image references on your order page. It doesn't inspire confidence:

After reading all the reply threads to the OP's I have noticed that Bluehost hasn't been mentioned much. Bluehost has some excellent support, competitive prices and has wordpress plugin right on the CPANEL. So far in the years of doing work on the internet they seem at this point to me among the best. If you're referring to a "One Click Wordpress Install" type feature, damn near every host has that.

When saying Bluehost is "among the best", it would be helpful if you could say what other hosts you've tried, just to offer people a bit of perspective.

They had years of giving excellent service, and the new owners are riding on the reputation that was built up, while service is going downhill. It's just a question of time until the majority of people catch on or that they go back to Brent's idea of giving good value and customer service. I had 2 accounts with them, and will not be renewing the remaining one when the subscription is up.

So basically, there's either SHARED HOSTING or VPS Hosting.

Shared hosting is pretty cheap and either of the big names like Dreamhost or Bluehost will work just fine for a smaller and less popular site.

If you're serious, get to VPS hosting. I use Linode.com and it's by far the best out of 10 companies I've tried over the years.

The reason why I don't consider those "Dedicated Wordpress" hosting services is because for the price you pay, you can get VPS which will be far better. If you're a techy and know how to read online guides, VPS will definitely be wayyy wayyyyyyy better. If you need some hand-holding, ok, maybe in that situation, getting a dedicated Wordpress plan might be a good option but ultimately VPS gives you the best performance.

Yet another "get a vps" reply. Why? In 99% of cases a VPS isn't the solution. A better host is. Sorry, but a VPS isn't a cure-all either.

Explain how a VPS is "better"...

The majority of people being told to get a VPS have ZERO experience managing a server, and most companies "managed" servers are not "we do everything and fix your website too". The server itself is managed. Tack on additional costs for licensing, backups etc...

Hostgator sites down again!!! It was very good before the acquisition but lately having more and more problems. Not sure if I will switch just yet, for the price it provides enough of the hosting I need right now. A recommendation is to get a tool like pingdom to watch the ups and downs and have valid metrics to compare.

I'd say it's time to move. The problem though, is people are complaining about their sites being "down" due to these issues, but then never move, they just "deal" with it...

When your sites are up, monitor them on 1-5 minute intervals, I bet you'll be surprised at the results.

Good idea. This is something that is easy to set up. It only takes a minute or two to get started https://www.pingdom.com/free/

Yep, another good one is http://statuscake.com - I'd recommend using 2 monitors from 2 different companies to get accurate results.

True. True. I listed the pingdom free membership as it seems the easiest to sign up for. Baby steps.

I am leaving Hostgator soon. They're not the same company anymore.

It used to be the best.

I tried Hostgator last year and the best thing I did at that time is that I have installed site monitor with that, to my surprise my site went down couple of times every week and the excuse was maintenance.

Try out Ipage, I got thr plan for $24 unlimited hosting for two years. I am not sure if that plan is still thr or not, but they are still reasonable.
GreenGeeks is another good option to check out. Don't go for Hostgator's overloaded servers and overworked staff, it is on the top charts because of thr affiliate program.

I don't know anything about GreenGeeks, but iPage is pretty bad.

Here's a simple experiment you can try that I believe will demonstrate just that.

Set up identical generic Wordpress installs on your GreenGeeks hosting and on your iPage hosting.

Edit the footer.php file of the default theme for each install. Right after the line that says <?php wp_footer(); ?>, add the following line:

      Page Generated in <?php timer_stop(1); ?> seconds.

      Save it.

Now every time that you load the homepage of each of those sites, you can scroll to the bottom of the page and see how long it took the web server to generate the page.

Load each site and record the amount of time it took to make each page. Repeat, and repeat some more. Take notes of the page load times and see if you notice if one host is able to generate the default Wordpress install faster.

EIG (Endurance International Group) is laughing all the way to the bank. You left HostGator, then signed up with iPage - the same company, technically, you never left.

Usually, it goes fast until they jam that server full of thousands of accounts.

Yep. The person "switched" hosts.

You need to get away from the fake "top 10" lists online that list EIG, and get away from the cheap "unlimited" account for $4. Actually leave EIG.

There are many other non-EIG companies out there, and many are really good.

I came up with a short list of shared hosting providers that seem reasonable and don't get many bad reviews:
    Glowhost
    Frog Host - Web Hosting
    Site5 Web Hosting
    Siteground
    JaguarPC
    Arvixe
    PacificHost

I moved several of my sites to Glowhost, because they seemed to be the best deal for me. They handled the relocation of more than 25 sites without a glitch, no downtime.

Hostgator, Hostmonster, Bluehost, Ipage, JustHost and FatCow are all heavily promoted hosts that are owned by EIG and most are hosted in the same datacenter owned by EIG and are quickly gaining a reputation for bad customer service and lousy performance.
See a complete list of EIG sites [to stay away from]here:

I have been using dreamhost and they work great for me. One click install, automatic update of Wordpress, great up time.

I found a promo code to get $20 off hosting if anyone wants it.

Abuzar, no downtime at Hostgator? Seriously?

There are much better coupons for Dreamhost than $20, when I signed up I got $97 off (just insert the word COUPONS on the promo code field).

I used both Bluehost and Namecheap web hosting. Both recommended. You might want to try Namecheap hosting, they are running Thanksgiving promotion right now.

Uh-huh. Do you realize their entire datacenter went down TWICE in the past few months, for almost a day each time? Bluehost was 100% offline, and most of Hostgator was too. (And BOTH are the same company: EIG.) And if you're an HG user, and you've not been migrated to Utah from Dallas yet, you will be.

This is what happens when people do not monitor sites -- they assume all is fine. It's not.

There are better hosts for WP. Use one.

I've used hostgator for years and never had any problems with them. I highly recommend them unless perhaps you're driving insane amounts of traffic. I'm sure they are still good in that case as well.
