US Affiliate Programs SSN & TAX ID

So far, I have not done a great deal with affiliate marketing and the programs I have joined thus far, did not require the SSN/TAX ID number(s).

Recently, I came across a program I really like and so started to investigate the matter of obtaining a ITIN (Individual Tax ID Number). I read this article which I thought was very interesting ...

Applying for a US Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN): A Saga in 3 Parts | Catherine, Caffeinated

So my question is to Non-US affiliates who have had to jump through this hoop: is it really that fraught with difficulty?

    Hi Will,

See if the affiliate program will accept an EIN number instead of an ITIN.
If so then it is slightly easier to get. You literally make a phone call and fill in a form over the phone. You are given your EIN on that call.

I can send you the phone number by PM if you need it

Do I need to have a registered business name to get a EIN? I was going to incorporate a generic business name (because I want to keep it separate from my personal SSN) and then I was going to just have dba's under that Generic.inc company and also put my bank account in the generic.inc name....however...i see on the articles of incorporation form that the corporation has to pay $800 a year tax...which Im not sure I will even make sense im just starting out...is there a way to keep my personal SSN separate from my affliate business? If I can get the EIN without a business name..do you have that number?

    Hi Ken

I appreciate your offer, but apparently the issue is that they will hold 30% of any commission generated until an affiliate can prove they are exempt from US tax and I understand this goes for many other US affiliate programs too.

You can find the correct answers here for aquiring an Employer Identification Number :Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) Online

and here are the restrictions directly from the application page
    https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/modiein/individual/index.jsp

    Restrictions

Effective May 21, 2012, to ensure fair and equitable treatment for all taxpayers, the Internal Revenue Service will limit Employer Identification Number (EIN) issuance to one per responsible party per day. This limitation is applicable to all requests for EINs whether online or by phone, fax or mail. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

If a third party designee (TPD) is completing the online application on behalf of the taxpayer, the taxpayer must authorize the third party to apply for and receive the EIN on his or her behalf.

The business location must be within the United States or U.S. territories.

Foreign filers without an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) cannot use this assistant to obtain an EIN.
If you were incorporated outside of the United States or the U.S. territories,

you cannot apply for an EIN online. Please call us at 267-941-1099 (this is not a toll free number).

you could open a business if you want then attach DBA's to that. you have to publish the announcement usually for a set amount of time in a local paper. Check your states .gov websites for the steps required. Then you just show the bank that DBA once approved and they will add it to your account.

Also, I'm in California, and yes there is a minimum fee of $800 per year paid to the franchise tax board regardless of profit . Not sure if that is the state you are planning to do business, but the fee you mention is the same amount.
