I'm having a difficult time finding a really good Directory Wordpress Template. I have purchased three in the past two weeks and have returned them all. I am looking to create a long term project and I am looking for a professional as well as flexible Directory Template or website.

Does anyone have any Directory experience that can recommend a quality theme that works?

I am running phpLD for about two weeks now and so far i like it very much.
Its not WP but a PHP template thats very easy to set up.
I purchased a WP premium theme before and paid good money for it but then found out that it didnt have all the options i wanted so i wasted my money on that.
    Good luck

The reality is there are no many good directory templates out there. When I was looking I went through a lot and the best one I could find was this:

    WordPress Directory Theme | AppThemes

Will, you are one of the warriors I look up to the most. I'd like to see what about Vantage you liked better than the other themes available now.

I am between Vantage and GeoPlaces by Templatic right now. The thing I like better about GeoPlaces is that I can basically use it for multi-cities right out of the box, with just a little tweaking actually. The thing I don't like about Vantage is that you have to buy a mult-city plugin for $29 in order to use multi city.

I also don't think you can limit what shows up on a free listing on Vantage - like if you want to offer a free basic listing, but not show the phone number, website, and videos, you can do that. This gives free value to any business that you can get in your funnel and upsell, and it gives more value to the paid listings.

I sort of like the look and feel, and ease of use of Vantage.

Vantage doesn't have a recurring payment option now, they say they're working on it and it will be ready in December, but i don't like how ANY of the themes make a business register. I prefer to bypass the registration process of all of them and do it on my own.

The reason I don't like the registration process is that all themes make it too difficult. A business has to register as a Wordpress guest, then fill out a bunch of stuff that you set up. The way I do it is I have a Google Form set up that collects some very basic info, and then I contact the business owner. This makes it a lot easier on the business owner to sign up, and it puts me as the directory owner in control of the process. I can tell my value story, build a relationship with the business owner, and maybe set up an upsell.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Are you building a link directory or a directory people will advertise on?

I've been VERY happy with eDirectory. They keep adding in features that nothing else comes close to touching. You can login for free to their demo at demodirectory.com.

I too looked at the Vantage theme and it would do some of what I wanted but it would only be a short-term cheap solution.

There are also some eDirectory knockoffs but if you are selling stuff, do you really want someone who builders knockoff software having access to your data???

But yeah, that is my recommendation. I know it sounds like a sales pitch and I guess it is. But my angle is that I am a user and the more people that use it, the better it gets and we all win.

Think about if WordPress is really the best choice for your project. If it's primarily a directory you might save a lot of headaches by simply using directory software, like phpLD.

Thank you for the recommendation. We've been doing directories since 2006. We also get a lot of people who are tired of their modified wordpress getting hacked. Because the source code for the plugins is often closed, it makes it that much more difficult to solve problems. Our source is completely open (though requires a license) so you can easily get help as well as hire your own developers for customization.

  • Take a look at WPMUDEV. They have about everything you'd want for WP and are rock solid. Not the cheapest, but a worthy investment.

eDirectory seemed the best after considering for one of my websites. Sure it costs a little bit more than a WP option, but may be worth the investment depending on your end goal

Welcome, new member! I see you joined today!
What led you to believe it was the best option?
By the way, isn't edirectory closed source?

eDirectory is open except for the license section. But to say it costs a little bit more is a tad misleading. The wordpress options are $100 or less and edirectory is $2k for an unbranded version. They both have their advantages and for 10 times the price, yes eDirectory is superior.

I agree with someone above about the registration process of all of them though. I think its ass backwards to make a business go through a thousand registration hoops and THEN ask for their money.

I for one, have been frustrated in the process of TRYING to register one of my businesses in a directly and just left before paying. So I know that has to happen to other people. I would prefer to have them pay first and then fill out the details.

I looked for a good directory theme as well and I like Vantage the most, but only if they manage to add a recurring payment option. They also have multiple language translaions available which is a big plus in my eyes!
