Want to get input on potential success

Okay, so I just read a post somewhere here, I looked and I couldn't find it again. Anyway, they guy had stated basically there should be no problem in success with IM as long as you have some sort of technical background.

Well, I don't have any kind of technical background. However what I do have is about 8 years experience running my own online business. I was a ticket broker for 8 years whereas I bought and sold concert and sports tickets. 100% web based. Of course this was before the economy crashed, very lucrative business, 6 figures a year income. Of course it is no where near as lucrative today which is why I am looking into IM. Anyway, I feel this qualifies me enough to make a beginning in internet marketing and after some hard work be very profitable.

I don't know, I just read the guys post and kind of took it as I am setting myself up for failure because I have no formal education, expecially with any kind of marketing. However I believe there is something to be said for a guy that can take $1600 and turn it into $150,000 a year several years later. There was not a whole lot of marketing involved in ticket sales whereas they pretty much sold themselves and I never had to worry with rankings or traffic because my inventory was on a network. My inventory showed up on the big guys websites that were always ranked in the top 10 on Google and other search engines.

Perhaps I read the post wrong!

Actually, you don't need technical background or formal education. Most people outsource what they don't know how to or don't have time for. It also appears that you've proved him wrong anyway, so why worry about it?

You can't learn if you don't try, so when yhou start in IM you learn on daily basis, secondly warrior forum is a huge informational site, you can ask about any problem and solve it with the help of experienced warriors.

  • I agree, you don't need a technical background. The most important part of online business and internet marketing is the strategy behind it. You can assign different parts of your strategy to other people who do have technical backgrounds. You can also learn to do things yourself, but that will take a lot longer.

Its helpful to have some technical knowledge, so even if you are outsourcing, you know what to ask for in the terms that people use on an everyday basis.

I have helped some clients set up their sites and have found on occasion that they learned their vocabulary from marketers for example someone once asked me to set up their homepage ATM, which I had no idea what it was until they told me they had been through Burchard's course and that was the language he used for putting an optin box on the home page.

So its helpful in outsourcing to be able to speak the language a little bit to ask for what you really need.

It also helps to know a bit tech stuff so you can at least evaluate what the outsourcer is offering you for the price they are charging.

A technical background is certainly not necessary. I'm an IT guy (computer networking, CCNA, etc), and it took me years to finally figure this thing out.

Find a niche, build up a large list of targeted subscribers, give them good info, promote a related product, and wait for sales to come in.

You could be a world class race car driver as long as you have some mechanical ability.

Doesn't really make sense does it?
