Registration Privacy?

Looking to purchase a domain name on GoDaddy.

Looking at the privacy registration add on. If I dont do this anyone can simply go online and look at the Whois directory and see my name / details etc?

With it no one would be able to find out who owns the site?

I am confused here. Would prefer my personal info not be accessible online.

If you don't want your personal info available for all to see then you need to have the privacy option.

I've got all sorts of spam, offers of alternative domain names and spoof renewal notices coming through because I didn't keep my domains private.

BTW Namecheap give you the first year privacy free if you register with them, but then you might have a better special offer at Godaddy too.

Yes, whoisguard protects your details so people must go through the hosting company to contact you. Bear in mind though if anything illegal comes about then authorities can still very easily get hold of your contact details through your hosting company with the necessary legal action.

But if you just want to protect your details for the sake of protecting, by all means you can do that. Or just get a PO box and use that rather than a physical address.

There are some people who will tell you Google penalizes sites that use whoisguard because it makes them less credible. Whether that is true or not is another story.

I would also strongly recommend NameCheap.com over GoDaddy.

If you want to protect your personal info then you should go for privacy protection. This is particularly helpful if you are promoting niches that you don't want your personal name to be associated with.

Why would you go with GoDaddy? There are many better domain registrars out there, I'd personally go with name.com, they often have FREEWHOIS coupons available you can get your whois privacy protection for free.

Frankly, I never bothered with the Privacy Protection for any of my domains.

Sure I get offers of domain names for sale and a few other bits and pieces. But nothing of any consequence or that I find annoying.

That said, it's only a few bucks so if it worries you, then just pay up and sleep soundly

Whoops, sorry - I forgot to add....

I agree there are many out there better than GoDaddy. But whoever you go with, be sure to google "(registrar name) coupons for (month name)".

That way you'll be able to use the coupon to get as much as 40% discount off your purchase. It's worth doing
