What to sell to Christians?

I'm a Christian and I have a pretty huge network of contacts all over my country. Now, I figured there's gotta be a way to make money off of it..

Books, cd's, shirts with print -- meh, already many people selling that. Websites for Christian organisations -- nope, someone's already doing that, and besides, Christian org. in my country are pretty dang good at keeping up their online presence.

Any other suggestions? Maybe there's something "non-Christian" I can sell them, only I use my network to get sales?

Gotta make a livin, ya now.

I think you can do a lot with inspirational and uplifting quotes. AS you mentioned, coffee cups, T shirts, etc. could be popular. Don't be cynical, Christians are like any other market, they buy things that suit their wants and needs. Go into a Christian bookstore and look around at the various merchandise for ideas.

I agree, Christians are just like the other markets.

It does not matter if other people are already selling something and have a lion's share of the market. That tells you what people are buying - and you want to sell what people are buying. Coming up with something new and trying to explain to people why they need it is no fun, I can tell you. I've tried it and it just doesn't work out well. You need to do good research and testing and position yourself to get a slice of the pie that already exists, imo.

Just because others are doing that doesn't mean that you canNOT do it. You just need to be able to do it better.

Go into a Christian book store. All those products are what targeted at our market.

books, cds, dvds, shirt, knick knacks & more stuff.

Why try selling something unrelated when you could sell something related? Have you ever gone into a Christian bookstore and found an insurance store instead, lol.. no way would you try that in real life, so why would you think about it online?

Give people what they want, they like it.

Since there are other people selling to Christians, you could start a directory site, where all these vendors advertise and list their products/online stores for a regular fee, and you send your list of contacts to that site; you could also promote the site to get more suscribers and from time, post good content to engage them.

    My 2 cents though.

As you say you are also a Christian, what would you like to see someone create and/or sell? Where is your pain/problem? What would someone have to offer you to get you to buy?

Be your customer first in this case, what are you eager to buy? What makes you buy?

Bible quotes on tshirts, mugs, glasses, bags, etc...

Laptop and tablet cases/covers with bible quotes, bible graffiti...

Tshirts printed with stuff like "Ask me about my God..." or "Ask me about my ticket to heaven..."

    Clever stuff...

The email marketing for that would be so easy. You have an entire book of material. heh I'm tempted to actually doing something similar now that you brought this up.

Someone was already selling books before Amazon, talk shows before Oprah, rock 'n roll before the Beatles...you get where I'm going.

Most likely, anything you can think of that your market will likely buy, is already being sold by someone. That someone can't stop you from being as successful or more at it than they are.

All the grifters who invoke the right names and insinuate they can get you into heaven if you just give them a big enough "offering", have proven one thing; that market has plenty of money they don't mind spending if they think it's a "Holy" investment. I should think there's room for one more peddler of fanciful tales.

Developed 2 bible apps: Kougo-KJV (iOS) and Dual Bible (iOS-19 languages, Android-4 languages), 1 visual gospel game: Rejoice (PC, Mac, Linux), and 1 paid iOS game with forgiveness & reconciliation of Father-Daughter as the main story.

Think that I can promote my apps & games to reach more audiences in your website/contacts.
Can I put banner or text link in your site?
      Hoe much is that?
      Hopefully it's cheap

Christians buy the same things everyone else buys surely? Food, clothes, music, games, health and beauty items, toys, electronics etc.

Maybe it's different in other parts of the world but the Christians I know in the UK don't really buy 'Christian' stuff that much - maybe the occasional Christian book or DVD?

There are so many things you can sell to Christians. As mentioned earlier, go to your local Christian Bookstore and check it out for ideas. If it's anything like the one in my town, there is an amazing variety of stuff there for sale.

Also, think about the types of things you buy as a Christian. Remember that Christians like all other consumers, buy a lot of products totally unrelated to spiritual themes. I don't think you necessarily need to sell religious products to Christians, as long as it is something that they need and doesn't go against Christian principles and values.

I can tell you that the industry surrounding Jesus has nothing to do with Him. He is brought low and a price tag put on Him but in reality He is the King of Kings and each and every person who does this stuff will give an account for it. Judging from the responses given is confirmation Jesus is not honoured by His own people. The church emphasizes so much on money that Jesus is totally hard to even see. In fact I dare to say He is not even in a lot of them.
SO I ask you. Is this really the path you want to go down. If it is. Be careful. Jesus is not a commodity He is the Lord and one day He will be your judge.

Targeting people based on faith is pretty low but it is a very big business. Self help, mysticism even Christian books, music, tv etc. It isn't that Jesus is the center it is that big money is made off of playing on other people's vulnerabilities. Sure you want to be part of that?

I do get your point and I agree to just about everything you're saying, but I gotta ask you back - if a Christian is making a product, for example writing a book, should he give it away for free and be stuck with the bill for printing, publishing etc. or should the Christian readers bless the writer back by paying for the book, thanking him for sharing what God have revealed to him?

I'm sure we're on the same page here, so don't get me wrong - in an ideal world all of this should be free for everyone, and the reason we "had" to start making other Christians pay us is because we stopped believing for God to provide. Or maybe Christians have gotten so greedy that they do not give some of their wealth when God tells them to; the money sent our way do have a tendency to come from our brothers and sisters, you know.. So that when the book I talked about is written and printed and handed out for free, the author IS stuck with the bill because of disobedient Christians.

Not defending anything or anyone here, just thinking out loud. There's a LOT wrong with the churches these days. When a pastor becomes a millionare and can have several expensive cars and houses....that's just not a Christian thing to do, especially when people are starving to death in other parts of the world. The love of God in that preacher should make him look at his wealth and count it as worthless rubbish and then give some of the money to the poor and hungry. Not that he should give away everything he owns (or maybe he should), but ministry was never supposed to be a career.

I see no problem in targeting people based on anything at all, though, really, but off course it depends on what you're selling. I would for example not sell a "get rid of your anxiety" course to a person with that problem, for obvious reasons, but I wouldn't mind for one second to sell the same thing to a psychology student with an interest in the topic. Not that you can control what reason people have for purchasing it, but you get the point.

Oh well, I'll just drop the "Christian" products and sell them something else.. I took down my shirt site once before, I'll just keep it that way. Sucks though, I spent a lot of time creating some pretty good designs.. lol

Edit: Oh, and the point when I said "there's gotta be a way of making money off of it", I meant the network. I would have said the same thing if I had a huge network of rodeo clowns or MMA-fighters.. Had nothing to do with them being Christian, really.

Although I agree with some of your assertions, I feel your tone is quite judgmental and opinionated, and disagree with you when you say things like "the industry surrounding Jesus has nothing to do with Him," and "targeting people based on faith is pretty low."

Why is it "pretty low" to offer products to people of faith? Is there some biblical injunction that prohibits selling products to followers of Christ?

I definitely don't see a problem targeting Christians with religious themed products, especially those that want to buy them. As someone raised in church and the son of a preacher who has seen the inside working of this "industry surrounding Jesus," I guess I have a more positive view of this market than you do.

What better way to find comfort, guidance, and inspiration and enhance your walk with Christ than with Christian products such as music, videos, books, bible study guides, clothing, etc. I'm all for it!

I don't know if people realize this but, Christians are just regular people like you and me. They like and do most of the same things, except maybe porn and booze.

So why not try promoting the same products you would promote to a "Non" Christian.

I would bet that most people here that have large numbers of people on their lists probably have quite a few Christians on the list and those Christians might even be on their buyers list.

Remember, Christians want to lose weight, gain muscle, find a date, and make money just like you and me.

Thanks for sharing you opinion, but you don't need to be so condescending and judgmental of me. Being a preacher doesn't necessarily give you any greater insights into marketing to a particular demographic (Christians) than I have.

The WF is a marketing forum, where people ask questions about marketing. It is not a religious forum.

The OP was simply asking what kind of things he could sell to Christians, not whether it was o.k to sell to Christians. Let's focus on answering that question in this thread.

Affiliate sales from charity programs? That's...just...wrong...

Ok, ok, maybe that wasn't relevant.

WHY DO PEOPLE THINK THAT EVERYTHING WE BUY HAS TO BE BASED AROUND OUR FAITH?

We also buy deoderant, trash cans, kitchen sinks, vacation packages, and doorframes.

      Just. Like. Everyone. Else.

If you can sell them some great food products from Yumbles.com I am sure I can get you a pretty awesome affiliate commission. Where are you based though?

      Just a suggestion,

How about going the Dooms Day preparation route and sell survival kit stuff or an ebook on Surviving the "Big One"?

Have a blessed 2014! Best of luck to you!

I've seen christian dating sites and would suggest that. Most religious people want to find a partner of the same faith.

Market anything that teaches them how to make money. Most Christians have an anti-prosperity consciousness. Tell them the truth. God is not poor, why should you be?

This forum isn't really about religion, but I just wanted to drop by and tell you that's B.S.

Please don't talk about us and our "consciousness" if you have absolutely no idea about it.

As possibly one of the only members here in a niche that is "faith based" I may be able to offer some insight. As many have said already, Christians live in the same world and buy the same things as everyone else.

I didn't really start getting anywhere until I finally understood that in order to be successful with my business I'd have to learn how to do internet marketing. To market my products and services the same way every other successful internet marketer does it, using the same methods. Why? Because when it's done right the stuff works on everybody the same way. Great headlines, great copy and killer funnels affect people of all walks and religions basically the same.

So you don't necessarily have to find a "Christian" product to sell. Just find a good clean niche and drill down into it, and there will be people of all kinds of beliefs buying products and services in that niche.

That said, if you do in fact want to sell a specifically Christian-focused product or service you need take a really honest look at why. The Christian niche has a reputation for being a tough niche to be successful in, so your passion and desire to serve a particular Christian niche had better be a stronger motivator than your desire to make money, or you will certainly quit before you've made any.

If the motivation is genuine then the next step in my opinion is to do what every internet marketer has to do no matter what niche he's approaching. Drill down into sub-niches and get very specific. You can't focus on "Christians", that's way too broad. You'll just end up selling novelties and such, anything with a cross or an inspirational slogan on it.

This though, is where your own personal walk with God and what you care about most as a believer yourself comes into play. If you're a Christian yourself and you really want to sell a Christian product or service for that reason, I think the best resource for ideas is you.

What ministry or ministries do you serve in at your church? What are the challenges you encounter working in those ministries? What special skills or knowledge have you developed as a result? What about your own relationship with God? What are the things you struggle with most there? What about your relationship or marriage? These are the only kinds of things, other than dating, that Christians really seek out specifically Christian-themed or Christian-focused products. Things that help us grow in ministry, grow in love and grow in God. But that stuff, unlike t-shirts and coffee mugs, is hard to fake.

I say don't look for trinkets and novelties. More and more believers are beginning to avoid this kind of thing because they want a life that reflects what they believe without having to announce it on a t-shirt or bumper sticker.

So look for something real that comes from a real passion of your own. A real desire to not just "make money off all these Christians I know", but a calling to serve them in some capacity based on some calling, passion or ministry of your own.

If you don't have something like that then I'd say do some research on the most popular niches, drill down as far as possible and then it's internet marketing as usual.

Adhere to their core values. There are dozens of "hot products" in religious niches at any given time including recently released books by prominent figures, videos, etc.

I would say to try to market towards the younger crowd. You can go into many Christian stores and find home decor and things like that. Try to come up with something eye catching for teenagers, such as funky jewelry. I live near a gift boutique that does really well by marketing Christian based items to teenagers.

Sell Rapture Insurance? Most either believe in it or not, thus the market.

I'm in this market since 2006 and sold over $500k in the last two years purely online of my own product. Books, audio books, and software. I'm in a tiny niche.

Anyone who says there's no money in this market is ignorant. Christian retail industry alone is a $4.2 Billion (yes, that's "B").

    There's a membership niche sites like teenministries.com, sermoncentral.com, etc.

There are gurus with coaching programs, mastermind groups, etc. very much like in money making industry. Check out: Home | Church Leader Insights

This is a HUGE market and best of all they're not aware of marketing tricks that most IMer's know.

Like Product Launch, email marketing, etc.

What my advice though is research your market and see what they're looking for and give it to them.

Are you interested in marketing to Christians?

Then serve them... as Christ served the church.

There are a lot of Christians looking to make extra money, just like everyone else.

Maybe create a blog featured around your passion for marketing and Christ.

Call it the Christian Marketer and create a daily show.

Then create courses on how to make money online...

It would be combing what you learn here for your passion for Christ.

    Just a thought...
