Recommend an alternative to blogspot

Hi warriors,

Can anyone recommend a good website builder membership site - don't mind if I have to pay.

Something like blogspot, but non-google.

All I want is a small personal blog, where I can just log in and and put in my updates quickly. I don't want the hassle of maintaining the security on a wordpress blog which I'd have to do if I hosted it myself.

thanks a lot,
Ruka

    Hi Ruka,

    I would definitely choose Weebly.com

Here is what I like :

    1. It is one of the best website builders in the market.

    2. The interface is intuitive to use - just drag and drop system.

    3. It provides all the basics elements for website building - pictures, paragraphs, videos, buttons, maps, contact forms, auto-responder etc...

You can also add your domain to their system. There is also a Pro version in case you want to grow your business.

    Hope it will help you

What? Wordpress that comes with cPanel is far more secure than the free alternate versions (Typepad/Blogspot/Weebly/Etc)

There's plenty of plugins to make sure you're more secure as well. The only thing that comes with it is usually a small hosting fee (from which ever provider you prefer).

      No.

For one, cPanel doesn't "come with" WordPress at all.
And then all Softtaculous/etc does is install it with defaults. It has zero security.

The alternatives are likely much more secured.

However, I do prefer WordPress. It simply means you need to learn security if using it!

With the auto-installers there are advanced options now where you can choose to enable "limit login attempts" and to do automatic backups at least. But as you said you should understand how to secure your WordPress site. Simple things like changing your login from the default admin to something else less obvious and stronger passwords help.

Sadly, plugins do very little to protect sites. That "limit login attempts" type plugin (there are many) does nothing for the DoS-like traffic caused by attempts. It still causes site resources to get away from you. There mere act of adding plugins gives more vectors of attack, too.

          It's not really security.

  • Register a domain name from Godaddy (preferably a .com) and link it to a website hosting account (get website hosting from a popular host like HostGator) and then login to the cPanel and install wordpress using Fantastico.

You will be able to control your online presence with much more freedom to build and expand onto your blog as you wish using Wordpress as the platform. It is definitely more technical than using a free host with a basic blog platform (i.e. blogspot and others), but it is well worth it.

I find Weebly to be INCREDIBLY hard to customize (yes, even with the D&D builder) and completely uncooperative. But that's just my thoughts.

Stay away from GoDaddy! Choose HostGator.....or disregard this advice and choose something completely different.

Hostgator IS NOT a registrar, and has a history of losing domains.
Get a real registrar. Namecheap, for example.

John, is this personal preference based on your own bad experiences or others bad experiences?

Godaddy and Namecheap are the best options in my experience; one is more aggressive than the other (i.e. Godaddy) in domain acquisition but I've never had an issue with registering and maintaining or even picking up domains from them and I've registered hundreds with them in my time online. Their interface and their account managers are good. Just pay attention to how they handle renewals and little things like that. Educate yourself and you won't have a problem with Godaddy.

Do not register a domain name under a web hosting company. That is a bad idea. You keep all your eggs in one place and give a web hosting company the ability to control your domain and not just your web hosting service; that is cause for trouble in the future.

But do you want to put up with the hassle of your entire site potentially being wiped without warning?

Just self-host it if your own concern is "maintaining security". It's only a few extra clicks.

You can't go wrong with Wordpress in my opinion. I found Weebly less user friendly too; bordering on illogical at times.

My vote goes to WordPress. You have got to handle the security and it's nothing hard.

Also you can check out Joomla.
