Alexa - A Nightmare or Reality?

In 2008, when I first started my website, I keep hearing about Alexa ranking from my fellow webmasters. They suggested me to use Alexa toolbar, and follow certain conditions such as switching to the Upgrade Plan or have more back links for acquiring a higher ranking. It's not that I didn't believe their words, but I thought these were additional requirements when the competition gets stiff. I was wrong!

My site has been generating a decent amount of traffic (an avg. of 100k visits a month), compared to many under the same category. Not only traffic, but we publish 40-50 unique articles each month which are shared in almost every social network. Companies such as Nintendo, Ubisoft, Paradox Interactive and many other video game publishers recognize as a valid medium and send their game copies for reviewing without hesitation. Not only the publishers, but celebrities in this industry never refuse our interview requests.

But Alexa, never recognizes us as prominent. We can hardly get passed a ranking over 600,000 mark. A friend of my recently started a Wordpress site that has hardly 5% content I have in my site, has a 400,000 higher ranking than mine.

So why do you think I'm going through such tragedy? We have a custom built website. Our site is submitted in almost every search engines. Then what is it that we are missing for Alexa to neglect us this much?

Highly appreciate your input regarding this matter. Have a nice day.

Unless you're selling your site or trying to sell ad space, what does it matter? Alexa ranking doesn't pay the bills.

That's why I never cared about it at the beginning. But it arises questions by many that why we have such a low ranking. And I have no answer for that.

Simple answer - Alexa's not perfect.

It's not guaranteed to work. And, like the member above said, if you aren't planning to sell, there's very little consequence of your Alexa ranking, if any. Even if you do plan to sell, the amount of revenue/traffic you generate is far more important.

Just keep doing what you're doing.

Alexa gathers data via their toolbar and with onsite code. If you're just relying on toolbar data, niche comes into play -- the websites geared more to techies will have more Alexa toolbar users, and will rank higher.

          What kind of onsite code?

We don't use it, but it's a tracking code similar to Google Analytics -- you have to pay for it, though.

        Here's the answer...

We don't care about Alexa ranking because Alexa may be the
most irrelevant site on the internet. Only newbies and fools care
        about Alexa rankings.

Your fellow webmasters gave you bad advice...

  • Please don't count on alexa rank. they cannot differentiate bot traffic or human traffic. And what is more, only people with a toolbar will be counted as a sample.

Mostly IMer's use the Alexa toolbar, so it is not accurate. Had your website been about IM or MMO niche, your Alexa rank would have been low. Normal people, and in your case video gamers, have no idea what Alexa is, let alone have the toolbar installed

Don't worry about it to much, it's the site stats that counts, not an Alexa ranking. Alexa ranking is about as useful as tits on a bull

I would focus on Google, Bing and Yahoo ranking and forget about Alexa. I've been in IM for 15 years and never even thought about Alexa and would never add any toolbar of any kind to my browser, toolbars never improve a browser, and often are buggy.

I really wouldn't spend time worrying about this if I were you.

As long as you are getting that many visitors every month and successfully running your business, everything is fine.

  • Alexa generates the rating based on the toolbar people download which is probably 1 / 1000th of a single 1% of users on the internet so it's obscured I think it more scued towards (in favor) marketing domains.

Just focus on sales not Alexa ranking. If someone asks you about your Alexa ranking again, say "it is what it is", and show them the money you're making.

Your 600k Alexa rank seems about accurate for a site with about 3.3k day visitors; also, it doesn't matter if your friend has only 5% of the content you have, alexa is about number of visitors, not number of pages.
