So I have a Space Ship for $21k. How do I market this?

This isn't a joke.

Trying to promote & sell this space ship but not entirely sure how or where to display it...

It's large enough to sleep (camping style) 2-4 people. About the size of a car.

I've put this on etsy and it got a TON of traffic but no buyers so I took the page down.

Needless to say it's always a head-turner but I need some cost-effective ways to promote this thing so I can sell it. It's for a friend, I didn't build it but I know who did.

Took him 8 months of constant labor. Custom proprietary design.

How on Earth, Pluto, Venus, etc did you manage to get hold of this? Did you make it on your own? How old or new is it? What does it do? Am just shocked to see this. Where is this space ship of yours??

Have you tried eBay? Go to the markets where there are a lot of unusual and weird items for sale.

What makes it worth $21K? Just the fact that someone spent a long time building it doesn't have anything to do with its actual worth.

      Good luck,

      Does it fly?

Anyone who build a space ship has a lot of stuff to share. I would advise you to build a blog and educate people on your space ship and (you) and then try to sell it. I can't imagine a person who would buy a spaceship, but if someone would take the time to build it there is probably a person looking for it... Use your blog to find that person

Without coming across as a jerk, somebody has to ask you what makes you think a kid's playhouse for your backyard is worth $21,000?

I see that being worth more like $210 on CL. Not trying to be insultive, but you might get a better response if you lay out how this thing could possibly be worth $2,100, let alone $21,000.

Are you sure can sleep 4 persons? Just compare the size to that human body in the picture.

BTW it's not a space ship it's space ship model.

You'll only get 21k for it if it actually flies.

But I would build a website for it and have the website about it being for sale and what went into building it. Then I would drive viral traffic to the sale from EVERYWHERE...Etsy, YouTube, Ebay, Facebook, Twitter, and so on...

Set up plenty of ads on the site. Generate lots of clicks. Sell the site along with the ship on Flippa.

You might get 21k for it that way.

You can give Nationalenquirer a tip... they like stories about space ships.

    Story might read something like

Put it on ebay, but present it as if you believed it was an actual authentic spaceship, fallen satellite, experimental aircraft, whatever. Make up a story of how you discovered it, etc. Don't say anything about seeing aliens ... but let readers know that you "don't understand the controls" and wonder if it's flown remotely. Or that given its size, the "intended pilots" must be around 4 feet tall.

    Play it up.

It will be completely obvious to everyone what this actually is ... however the reader's takeaway will be: "Holy crap, this nutjob actually thinks he found a real spaceship"

As people forward it around Facebook, making fun of you, there will be millions of eyes on your auction. Who knows, you might even get picked up by Mashable.

You said it brought a ton of traffic, but no buyers so don't "push the river",so to speak. Figure out ways to use it as a traffic generator, or publicity generator; think in terms of Bill Glazer's "Outrageous Advertising".

If you don't have his book get it, and use his ideas as a jumping off point for inspiration. The best thing about your space ship is it's potential for curiosity/publicity, so use it for that. Be "The Little Green Marketing Martian" or something.

How is it car sized; are those legs somehow far in the background? You need a pic that shows it's size better.

The positive "wow" responses this is getting are welcomed, and mimic that of the many, many people who have seen this over the years

For those of you who are bitching about the price, I'll kindly point you to FAO schwartz, Nightmare armor, and any tradeshow that sells rare largescale handmade goods.

I've seen playsets and sheds (smaller than that ship) go for more than that. And they exist in duplicates.

This, however, is one of a kind.

YOU might not pay that much for it, but there's a sizable demographic of people who have the money to and gladly WOULD.

Anyways, for the other % of you who aren't lowballers... Thank you for the actual advice.

The first thing I would do is get it back on Etsy. Put a video walk through up on YouTube. Get a better photo - Daylight preferred..

Then DEVELOP the story. Your friend made it, he has had a fascination since a child, really talented guy blah blah blah. Don't sell the item, sell the story.

In essence you are selling a piece of lawn art for $21,000.

Spend the time and get your marketing materials grade A (Story, photo's, video) Post the crud out of thing and see what happens. (Pinterest, Etsy, and any/all Social media you can) YOU WANT THE BUZZ.

Write a story and photo and submit it to the local newspaper

Look at it this way, really, if you can sell this you can sell anything. If you create enough buzz to sell this, others with crazy stuff may take notice and contact you!

Good luck in your out of this world endeavor!

Fine - then all you have to do is find ONE of those people. If it's a sizeable demographic, shouldn't be too hard.

It's a curiosity - it doesn't fly - it looks small in comparison to the 1/2 person you see in the photo. Doesn't look mobile enough to be a "camper". Is there seating or beds inside?

It looks like someone's cool project - doesn't look like $21k.

Wasn't bitching ... merely being practical. That's a neat little playhouse for children. Again, down here on Earth, in the real world, many of us are wondering why you think a little playhouse for children is worth $21,000.

Not bitching, merely asking for some type of logical explanation of your insane, out of this world, price.

This, however, is one of a kind.
So what? I can line you up thousands of 'one of a kind' things that aren't worth a nickel.

YOU might not pay that much for it, but there's a sizable demographic of people who have the money to and gladly WOULD.
Apparently not, else you wouldn't be posting questions like this in a forum like this ...

No need to insult us rational questioners, now is there?

When you find that sizeable demographic willing to throw out $21,000 for a silly toy, send them my way. I have one of a kind tennis balls that I have 'customized' and made one of a kind, pnly $1,997 each ...

And this little silly playhouse for children is worth $21,000 'cause ?...?

All the posts advising you to lower the price were just as much "actual advice" as the posts with advice you enjoyed hearing. A lot of Warriors are getting a bit fed up with people who start advice seeking threads, only to argue, and even disrespect those who gave advice they didn't like.

People who suggested you lower the price aren't "bitching lowballers". They are not prospective buyers trying to beat you up on price, nor were they complaining or as you like to call it, "bitching". Rather, they were posting their honest feedback to help you out, which you might want to thank them for.

You may be right about value, but who the heck really knows if you can find one of 7 billion people willing to pay your price, until you actually do? Your "sizable demographic" who are willing and able to buy it is only a hope until you can actually locate one of them, which you'd have already done if your statement was a fact instead of a dream. You're here asking for help, apparently because you really don't know where this demographic can be found, which probably means you also don't really know if it exists.

We all wish you good luck I'm sure, but nobody here is likely to confirm your high estimate for this spaceship that sleeps 2-4, yet looks like the person standing under it would have to curl up into a fetal position just to get themselves into it. The more I think about it, the more I think you're "highballing" the price more than anyone here is "lowballing" it.

In the future, I suggest you do your part to improve the atmosphere of this generous forum by showing a little gratitude when people try to help you, whether you like or agree with their advice or not.

I think we can all appreciate the work your guy put into the model, but it isn't a top tier design.

The person willing to pay $21,000 for a backyard model is probably a NASA fanatic and wants it to look closer to an actual vehicle. What I see in the photo above is a time consuming hobby that looks "pretty cool" at best.

A $21,000 model probably has to look closer to this:

This isn't really a lawn art or play gym for the kids, have you contacted any 'alien related' stores to see if they need a kid friendly attraction? I could see some shop in roswell picking this up to seperate themselves from their competition.

How many alien shops in Roswell have a real space ship?

As a father of 3 who actually HAS bought his kids a $10k play set / tree house, I have to agree that I am not seeing $21k here. This is a $3k-$5k build at best, at least based on the photo shown here. Its also SUPER niche... There are only a handful of people in the market for over-$10k kid play gear, even fewer in the over $20k market. Then, of those, how many will be in the market for a UFO dome vs a complete jungle gym?

Honestly, I think you're being unrealistic with your pricing expectations. I could get all 3 of my kids CARS for your asking price. But that's not really the point, its about price-value perception. This could be easily built by most competent carpenters going from nothing but the picture shown here. I could do it. Most of the guys I know could do it. Why would I pay you $20k when I can hire a local guy to build it for under $5k?

Drop the price and you could sell these all day long.

The way I could see this being profitable is to be able to mass produce it someone for $100 each and sell for $250-$500.

I understand the point about one-of-a-kind, etc, but I have a very hard time believing somebody is going to see it that way. Who knows, though. Maybe I'm wrong.

I think if inside, it had some cool gadgets to make it feel like spaceship/playhouse, it could go for $1,000. But again, it's all about the profit margin. You have to be able to make them quickly and easily.

This is as unrealistic as the OP's plan. No way you could come close to buying the wood, hardware and paint for $100, and it isn't an easy project; you'd be working for a lot less than minimum wage even if you could get the materials that cheap, which you definitely can't. Almost every piece on this thing is curved, and that just isn't something you could knock out in a weekend, even with an excellent shop and skills.

Even if it were profitable with those numbers, by the time you worked out mass production, you'd probably have already saturated the tiny market anyway. And then there's delivery, which is a whole other can of (expensive) worms...

I think building some excitement around the product will be key here.
I'm not your target market but if i were to spend this amount of money then i want to get passionate about the product i was buying...like i would with a car or over priced watch, or anything in that price bracket.

The videos below are just to get your juices flowing rather than ones to actually use - but i hope you get the idea.

All is not lost. There's a sucker born every minute. The trick is to find that person. You could try the relatives of those who bought into the Brooklyn Bridge for sale pitch.

But I tell you, $21K is too stiff a price (not an FAO Schwarz item for sale; no name brand), especially if the buyer still has to cover for trucking/shipping expense.

On a serious note, you could try talking with a realtor to package it with a house/land for sale--assuming the owners will agree. As an add-on, it should appeal to prospective buyers with children. Pricing with the JV agreement, if you can pull this, is negotiable.

EDIT: I didn't notice that this thread was since 2013. If it's still in your friend's backyard, your friend has got to come back down to earth with his $21K tag.

It's not bad enough we have a half dozen or more newbies here bumping threads from 2011 and 2012 - you have to bump your OWN thread from 2013?

      Geesh.

You live with your parents, dropped out of school, and work at McDonald's. If I were you, I wouldn't be trolling.

Lol I wasn't trying to insult you.

I was making a joke about getting rich overnight.

I am sure the actual material cost for this spaceship was much less than $21,000, but your friend wants to be compensated for the blood, sweat, tears and time that he put into this project.

    I get that.

In order to do this, you need to position the spaceship as a unique, one of a kind item that excites the senses and stirs up the emotions. It absolutely has to be positioned as a rare, once-in-a-lifetime type of item that tugs at the heart strings of the prospect if you want to get anywhere near $21k.

I'd start with getting some creative and imaginative videos made for this spaceship. In addition to that, I'd get a copywriter on board to craft some compelling sales copy to draw the prospect in.

This is about desire and wanting something badly, not just needing it. If you can accomplish this through your marketing, then I think you may stand a fair chance at getting offers close to your asking price.

Without a rocket engine, you would have to do some real selling to convince me that it's worth even a tenth that price. Even then I would have to be drunk.

"FAO schwartz" ... That reminds me of the Senfield episode when Jerry and George got the low offer from NBC. George said that is not what Ted Danson gets per episode.
