Opt in as a Popup? Good idea or no?

Well, what do you think About putting an opt In box in a pop up? I have one running right now that pops up after 15 seconds. Its a nice opt in box with a cool eBook offer.

so long as its a content page this would probably be pretty effective. Big no no on a splash or squeeze page though.

Ya I would definetly disable it for my future squueze page. Right now it only pops up on my posts.

I use popups for optins on my niche websites that have a lot of rich content. I get about half of my optins from the popup so it converts well.

Some things I did to avoid frustrating visitors:

        - Show the popup after a short time duration on a page, not right away - 10 seconds
        - Don't put the popup on every page of your website. I added it to the most-trafficked pages.
        - Disable the popup for visitors who return to your website within the same 24-hour period.

That's pretty much the same strategy as me. I just started it on my highest traffic website, well see how it goes.

One thing I've done is have the pop up just say: Grab Your Free XXXXXX Book Before Someone Else Get's The Last One!"

Then the opt ins on the page.

This has worked even better for me than the pop up being the opt in.

Test and track results. It's the only way you'll really know which approach is best for your prospects.

Personally, I don't like pop-ups but I can't deny that in some situations they are effective. To me they are pretty intrusive - like someone busting into your conversation without being invited.

I, instead, just make my opt-in box appear above the fold on all pages of the web site so it's not hard to find it. But I don't leave it at that - I am promoting the sign up all the time in my emails, products, reports, content, etc.

As others have said, pop-ups really get annoying when they get in your face multiple times after you've already decided to opt-in or not.

                The best to you,

                Steve

I see what your saying. I find them annoying also, so I have them set to only pop up once only on first visit to the site. I also have the same opt in box at the top of the sidebar, and I'm building a squeeze page.

I think an attractive popup for a good offer is great on a home page or main landing page other than a squeeze. Personally, I get annoyed if they keep popping up on every page. Once per visit popups are fine though.

Whatever you do, it's advisable to test different delay times and versions to get a better conversion rate.

Seems like a good idea but you will only know for sure by testing it yourself.
Try longer timings too if you have a few hundred words on the page.

I prefer the popup without the optin on it. Place an image, text, or video on popup that takes the visitor to a squeeze page or page with an optin form.
