So much has been said on this topic ... A quick Google search returned me this useful article, you might want to check it out, click. (I am in no way affiliated with this website, it's just a second result on Google for "ways of getting traffic".)

    Be interesting.
    Write great content.
Find something that makes you unique and exploit it for traffic.
Learn how to call attention to yourself.
Create relationships with people with power to move traffic.

Really? Most successful Internet entrepreneurs I know built their business exactly using those strategies, not gimmicks.

I agree with your last two points...

"Learn how to call attention to yourself.
Create relationships with people with power to move traffic."

..although we probably disagree about the exact methods to accomplish this since Google is the main entity I try to create a relationship with.

I think that people get too caught up in your first 3 steps and these steps may well be beyond their talents. They then end up being broke and frustrated.

That's true. Tactics might be too limiting but high-level strategy too overwhelming. I guess for people starting out just focusing on the tactical aspect might give them the most important benefit: get things of the ground fast.

    1. Create Smashing, grab-by-the-eyeball content

    2. Write articles and submit to the article directories

    3. Bookmark all the articles on tons of social media sites

    4. Create squidoo lenses, hubpages, weebly sites, et.c with two different anchor links pointing to your website. Also, optimize the images you include in these websites. This alone can get you on front page with a competition of 5 million.

    5. Buy PPC ads

    6. Create informative videos from your articles and syindicate it all over the place (i think traffic geyser or tubemogul is effective for this).

    7. Create podcasts of your articles and submit them to podcast directories.

Get creative. There are tone of ways to advertise your blog/ site.

    Respectfully,

    oscar

  • It takes some work, but you Google blogs in your niche. Go to the top ones and leave intelligent comments (not spam) along with your URL. I've actually gotten some backlinks that way from related blogs that put me in their blogrolls.

All the above holds true, just keep spreading the word. Also, this work takes time to replicate across the web. True, long standing sites with great rankings were not built over night..well, not most of them lol

In your niche i would say blog commenting is a must. MMO bloggers like to interact with each other. Find a few that have the "top commentators" widget and start becoming a regular commenter on these. Start by looking for "dofollow" blogs, as many of these also have the TC widget. To find these blogs, try a dofollow engine.

Do this for 30 days straight. You should see some marked improvement in your traffic levels. Also be sure to pick blogs that are in your niche. Good luck!

    Mike,

Whenever you make a post - make sure you Ping it and also add it to Digg and Technocrati with appropriate tags.

Also participating in other people's blogs and linking back to yours is also a good way to get some traffic.

Another idea is you can find a high profile blogger and ask to see if they will allow you to write a 'guest article' for your blog or you do an interview of him - that way he can promote the interview to his readers with a link pointing to your interview post.

I like Twitter for getting rapid traffic. If you have a good, informative article and you send your followers to your blog via Twitter, many times your tweet will get re-tweeted and multiply your traffic exponentially.
