Hey guys,

As far as I'm aware, most of you who do IM for a living work straight from the comfort of their own homes.

My question is, where do you work? Kitchen, bedroom, living room, office etc...

I ask this because not too long ago, I read an article that was claiming that using a single room for more then one purpose becomes detrimental in certain cases.

What I mean by this is; if you use your bedroom for sleeping (obviously) but you also use it as your work room, your brain will get mixed signals. Meaning, when you sleep, your brain will stay on and subconsciously be thinking about work. On the other hand, if you are working on your business while laying in bed for example, you will not be able to concentrate as well and you will tend to doze off because you're brain is basically telling itself that its in its rest room and its time to snooze.

From experience, I think there is some truth to this. I tend to have problems concentrating and I get very tired quickly when working on my business from my bedroom.

Does anyone else experience this?

Cheers!

Absolutely right. I always counsel that you should have a 'work' room that you use for work. It just has to be somewhere free from distractions and where, when you go there, your brain gets into 'work' mode.

I personally don't know of anyone working from their bedroom/living-room, maybe a office built on or separate yes.
It must be very difficult to be productive if you work where you live, too many distractions IMO...

Completely agree with you on that! I don't know if I have ADD or what but I need a place dedicated that I can work at.. Working from home is too easy to get distracted by every day stuff. If you can afford it build a home office dedicated to your work or get rent an office. I live closet to Indianapolis and they have this place called "SpeakEasyIndy".

From their site, "It's essentially a clubhouse for entrepreneurs, designers, and geeks. We believe that bringing these folks together in a fun, productive work environment is the surest way to accelerate the development and launch of high-growth startups in Central Indiana."

Maybe where you lived has something similar?

Guess what ?? You know one now

I work straight from my Bed sprawled out and all ( with night stand to my left with my note pads and a cup of cherry sparkling water there too)... ...just like I did all thru high school and college for projects and homework. Parents hated it and bitched about it constantly.

That is UNTIL they would see my report card.

It is a very comfortable, easy place to concentrate, with zero distractions !

The fact is I tried a formal office and desk and it has NEVER worked for me.

Moral of story : Do what works for you. Period !!

Agree. That's what I do. Someday using my kitchen top and do 30-40 min work and someday I use my dining table and do a few hours work.

I dont watch TV or work in my bedroom because the bedroom is for 2 things only, sleeping and you know what else.

I have a work desk but dont use it because the space is cramped. I prefer to work from the kitchen at the dinner table or from my couch (while drinking a coldie).

I certainly don't work in the bathroom (lol), but I can't begin to count how many times I've thought of new ideas, figured out problems, remembered something, etc. while on the toilet!

As far as work space is concerned, I used to work in my bedroom. Just as mentioned above, my sleep was affected and I had a hard time concentrating. Because I live in an apartment, and have limited space, I set up half of my large living room as my "mini-office". I still get distracted here and there (family of 4), but I have found myself more focused and productive versus working in the bedroom.

i dont know why people would say "too many distractions" from working from home - i guess if someone cant have enough self discipline to focus on work, rather than other things at home then... they need a 9-5 job..

but its true.. i had my room and workroom in the same room.. and had lots of sleep problems. As soon as i layed in bed, i started thinking... i could be writing a post right now, or new ways of marketing or anything! it drove me nuts until i developed discipline as that thinking is usually unproductive.

      .
We can't all work from home in our PJ's.
I can afford an office, always worked that way and i prefer dressing up and "going to work."
I do treat my business like any other 9-5 B&M.

Also dont understand why so many people have this aversion towards 9-5
jobs, that's how most people earn a living.

The problem are not 9-5 jobs, the problem is freedom.

People want to work where they want and when they want without having to go to work and just kill time on a clock.

I personally don't mind working 8 hours a day, but I prefer to wake up at 10AM, work a little, get some exercise, make a nice breakfast, then work a little more, later go out, come back at 2AM and be able to work for another hour then go to sleep and repeat. That's just my schedule, and how I like to do things. But that all wouldn't be possible without internet marketing which allows me to be my own boss and make my own schedule.

That's one of the reasons I started internet marketing (and also because I saw the potential for some really good money to be made ).

    Hi there Naks,

Talking about the work place for IM, I pretty much do it in my bedroom and haven't experienced any of your stated problems so far. I guess it pretty much depends on your mood of working, which is some time you can double your work while you are in mood and sometimes you can't even write a single line if you aren't in the mood.

If you are experiencing difficulty in working than I'd suggest you to change your work place to some different and fresh place. See where you feel most easy and enjoy then stick to it

    Hope it helped,
    Cheers.

Crikey, I'm so lucky. I get to share a large airy room with huge windows, a view of the beach on one side and our garden on the other, with my partner, who now has her own succesfull online work.
I'm not going to say the views are world class, or especially inspirational, but most of my best ideas come from staring at fishing boats or humming birds.
That said, I seem to do a lot of my work via my phone while sitting on ferry boats these days.

I believe there is some tie there. Thats why we write down goals and daily plans because its starts things we are not necessarily aware of. Of of a sudden you wake up in the middle of the night with an idea.

For me I have my own office dedicated to just my Internet marketing. I do this because I then can write off a portion of my house payment an a business expense when its time for me to pay my taxes. I and you should as well register as a business owner and receive the tax benefits of being self employed. Especially if you are working a 2nd job this can really benefit you.

I'm a real productivity nut. I tend from work from my front room most days, but i change it up, depending on what I am doing. Different scenarios work better for different aspects of my work. If I am writing sales copy, I like to be around people. If I am doing heave research I like complete silence. If I am lacking focus one day I will go to the library. Etc Etc.

I do believe you need to be careful of your work environment, but don't be too precious about it. Better to have a strong system that is applicable to different environments.

I'm still in university owned apartments so my work area is right below my elevated bunk bed lol. It works and it saves space so I have zero complaints.

I've grown used to reading/studying and doing all of my school work/business work all from this very spot so I literally do all my work from my bedroom (library and coffee shops are often over crowded). I might post a picture of my setup later, but I'll need to clean up a little before i do that :p

Oh, and i have two roommates. Thankfully we each do our own thing so there has been zero problems as far as getting along and doing skype sessions whilst others are trying to study.

What you've posted is true. I've been a freelancer for 3 years now and I find that where I work affects my productivity. To be very specific even the chair that I sit on affects my productivity.

If you'd like to do this fulltime, invest in your "home office". It doesn't have to be another room. It could be a different corner of the room where you have your work table and chair.

I find that when you separate where you work from where you sleep, you become more productive at work/IM.

I work in my living room, sitting on my couch in a backward robe that I call my "snuggie" (seriously those things are nothing but backwards robes) while eating junk food and flipping through junk tv. Occasionally as the urge hits I walk my happy a** from the living room to the bathroom with my laptop where I proceed to forget what I was there for and have to peel myself from the seat. I then go to the kitchen to restock on junk food and start the cycle again.

If no one else is doing the same then either they're doing the wrong thing or I'm just delusional, pick your poison.

Sleep experts will tell you that a bedroom should be used for
sleep and possibly one other activity (it's called good sleep
    hygiene).

Ideally you should work somewhere else.

Having said that when I started my business the most practical
place to work was my bedroom so that's where I got my work
    done.

You do what you have to do in business.

Whatever activity you do in a certain way creates a neural pathway and builds a specific pattern of energy field in that area. And whoever comes in the vicinity of that area is influenced by that energy pattern.

Neural pathways dictate how information travels through your nervous system. Every time you learn or do something, neural circuits are altered in your brain. These circuits are composed of a number of neurons (nerve cells) that communicate with one another through special junctions called synapses. So if you have a bad experience from certain incidence you create bad neural pathway. Every time that incidence happens you will get the same bad experience.

So bedroom is actual a rest place and energy pattern of rest is created over and over again when you sleep everyday and if you do work in bedroom you might feel lazy because that energy pattern might influence you while working. If you start working in a bedroom than it is possible that you might not get sleep 'cause than you would be creating work pattern.

If you want proof than you can always experiment. Experience is the best proof.

if you become successful then you can have entire floors or separate bedrooms for work

for example in my I have a home office space both in my walk-in basement, with video production studio, plus one of the bedrooms for another office area, with whiteboards, window view and the rest

in my main bedroom that's for sleep and time w/wife

if i were starting over again, back in a 1-bedroom like i was in 15 years ago, I'd have a separate place for work with shoji screen or other way to make the workplace somehow separate. use earplugs/headset if necessary to block noise, that's very important, esp. earplugs if in noisy city

  • This would only be detrimental if you never left your bedroom.

well...I don't be live in all dis that u need a separate room to work on..
it is just ur mind..that needs to be under control...
take example of eklavya in Mahabharata who was amongst the best archerer in those times..he did not have any any master but created an scripture of master dronachary and learned all dose great skills without any guidance but only due to its concentration..
    ..
even when I am driving if a certain thought comes into my mind I start sharing it...
cause I don't think that ur mind mind needs a place to concentrate but ur body needs it...so just relax wherever u r ....though it comes automatically irrespective of place...time....etc

Just curious, does anyone rent office space outside the home? That's my eventual goal.

Even though I'm 30, I still work at home. My moms home! She lives less than a mile away, so I leave my work computer there in her office & walk over most days. I've tried the coffe shop and libraries, but nothing beats momma's house. Everyone there works a day job, so I get the place to myself all day.

I typically work in my bedroom enough though I do technically have an office in my home. I never really gave it much thought that maybe i'm not as productive as I could be if I were in the office. I'll try this weekend and see what happens.

Its best to have a place for business and a place for other things. I find I have that problem as well. Nevertheless being able to work from anywhere in our home for example your bedroom, it eliminates the reason for the bed room.

I have had a desk in my bedroom but that didn't work out too well for me. I never got proper sleep. I now have a corner of the living room where I work. My husband works from a chair on the other side of the room. Really we should convert a bedroom into an office for us both, but we will get to that later this year, I think.

I know some folk don't have any trouble sleeping, the fortunate things! Since I always have had trouble with sleeping I have to take more care of myself.

    Best wishes,

    Ruth

Most people have a TV in the bedroom that probably interferes with sleep more than the iphone or computer. It's just too easy to flip on the TV with the remote. If you find it difficult to sleep in the same room where you have been working for the day, simply move your laptop to another room when it's time to go to sleep. That way you won't be tempted to get up and work as you would have to walk to another room to get to your computer.
