Is it possible to monetize this website?

Hello everyone.

I created this site a few years ago as part of a university project:

The Shard, London Bridge - Home

It's entierly focussed on the Shard building in London, a new skyscraper which is the tallest in britain and the EU.

It currently gets around 60-100 views a day with the average time spent on the website averaging around 3-4 minutes.

I've got some adsense up, but that only gives me about £10-15 a month, enough to pay for the hosting costs but not much more.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could monetise this website further, I can't of what else I could do apart from sell items related to the building, but wouldn't I be breaking copywright laws or something?

Apologies for the newbie-ness of my questions but I'd appreciate any advise

        Thank you everyone!

I read the first post and thought 'oh well never mind then' but the other replies have lifted my spirit somewhat!

I am VERY new to Internet Marketing, so even things which seem simple to you are meaningless to me, however I am a very quick learner so I'll be spending the next few weeks researching affiliate marketing/advertising etc to see how it's done.

I hope if I ask the odd question here you guys would be willing to assist...seems like a great community here and the few simple questions I've asked have been met with nothing but friendly assistance!

        Cheers again!

You can try to get some local business owner attention and if you can convince them one or two banner can be placed.

@aurettemag Hard to monetize??? What planet are you on.

I see so much potential here that I'm struggling to contain my excitement. As we all know, where there's real traffic there are always ways to make cash.

@danp142 Look around for London-based affiliate offers on sites like Affiliate Window, or Paid on Results.
Search for things like sight-seeing tour offers, London souvenirs, even consider Groupon ads and Amazon affiliate links to the new local London offers, or even books and stuff about the architect (was it Lord Rogers? I dunno).

I do know these offers exsist, as I've considered getting into the 'London niche' myself, and probably would have done by now, if I hadnt bailed out of the UK in favour of a beach in Brazil.

Basically think outside the box. Take a look at the search terms people are using to hit your pages, and then consider the offers you could make to your vistors...

    EDIT
Crikey, just checked out your link, it's way more than a page, it's a fully grown website, with a Google page rank of 2.
Get to work mate, you have so much potential and heaps of useful (-ish) info already.

I'd start by changing your header title to something like 'The Shard and Other Memorable London Landmarks' to let people know you have more content, then grow your site into a real authority on modern London buildings, or something like that

What you're sitting on here is a very easy daily income of let's say £10-£40, and much more if you're prepared to work a couple of hours a week publishing new content, blogging and getting social.

      I completely agree with PeckhamPirate.

You have tons of opportunity and all it will take is a couple of hours of work and some out of the box thinking. Another idea would be to make the changes PeckhamPirate said but also to go to local vendors with websites and offer them very cheap banner ads on the sides.

Also, you could work on your SEO from a social media stand point (if you've not done so already) and create video's of the Shard along with places around and rank them on youtube, share them on Facebook and use a service like SocialAdr to get social bookmarks.

      I hope that helps.

So it appears the best way forward would be to rent add space to local businesses, how is this usually done exactly. Do I pitch the website via an email, go see them personally etc...?

You wouldn't be breaking copyright laws if you are an authorized re-seller of items related to The Shard or if you create the products yourself.

Does the Shard have a directory of tenants online? If not, that could be a monetization opportunity...

Would you guys say that the Amazon affiliate programme would be a good place to start?

I'm only getting around 60 unique visits a day, this used to be over 100 but I haven't updates the site in a while. I think I could get it to the 200 mark if I started a blog and did some reviews.

Is that kind of traffic sufficient to make any money? (anything over $20 a month which is what I get from adsense)

Sign up for Commission Junction, you may be able to add some travel vacation offers to London. Also you can contact local businesses and see if they would like to rent ad space on that site

Thanks, just joined some affiliate programmes and posted a few adds on my site.

I plan on writing creating a blog and writing reviews. I hear the best way to get traffic is to publish these reviews/articles on the web, but where do you publish them exactly?

Monetizing this site is a piece of cake. And to whoever said it would be hard I see a spatula and a fast food uniform in your future with an attitude like that.

            1. Sell travel tour agencies add spots or sell them leads.

2, Sell ad space to sub niche travel sites that specialize in architectural tours and trips.

            3. Sell books like the 7 wonders of the architectural world (I just made that title up).

            4. Develop your own product like a book about the 7 wonders of the architectural world etc.. and sell it for 100% profit.

Those are just a couple without any thought about it at all.

    Hi,

Any website can be monetized if you share immense value through the website or an adjoining blog.

    Money follows value.

Money also follows the quality and number of business connections you make.

Build relationships with pros in your niche.

Promote them. Share their content. Help them. Doing this makes you sticky to prospering relationships, all forms of value and of course, money.

Sharp site and great look. Keep sharing value and building connections!

    Hope this helps.

best way is to advertise local shop owners,
ask them to pay a monthly fee it could be 100 or 200 pounds per shop per month,
most will jump on the offer,
don't put any adsense on this website, you better off adsense while testing and trying to reorganize the layout to maximize your roi

you can have a banner top/bottom/right column rotating the ads for all the shops owners, or use some small square box on the right and sell each space separately

    1. NEVER do a black background with white text. It's the opposite of what our eyes are accustomed to taking in.
    2. Have a slideshow right at the top. I know you have one a little bit further down, but I believe that one at the top will boost user engagement.
    3. Change the link color (PM me or Google it if you need advice on how that's done).
    4. Make sure the ads blend in with the background. The stark contrast might get them noticed, but it could adversely affect bounce rate.

    Pros:
    1. I love the quick facts thingy. Nice setup there.
    2. Good info.

    Aha.

    1. Contact real estate website in the UK and ask them if they are interested in direct advertising.
    2. Optimize it for a higher AdSense CTR.
    3. Affiliate with the Shard? Do they have some sort of paid tour someone could buy online, and could they pay you if you referred the person over to them?
    4. Sell it.

Thank you JR John, I'll try out your website suggestions and see what happens!

I'm not doing anything to drive traffic, just letting Google do it's thing. I''ve recently set up a twitter blog page so I'll spend some time on those to drive some more traffic

Oh and the shard is a very new building but is quickly becoming a major landmark for the city, I'm hoping that in a few years it will be as well known as the London Eye.

With the right content added it's extremely simple to achieve tens of thousands of views, or even hundreds of thousands of views a day via high traffic blogs, facebook and twitter, and the power of viral YouTube clips.

Forget adsense. You're talking chicken-feed there.

You can monetise this site 500-fold within a matter of weeks. There is content available that would effectively make it an authority site. Monetising it is a simple matter of offering the massive traffic you would generate from the methods I previously mentioned, products such as Kindle/ebooks to download direct from your sales page.

Of course, restructuring the site, the addition of more content, and the subsequent work involved with Facebook, YouTube video creation, etc, will all cost money.

If you're not prepared to invest in the site then you've a long road ahead of you before it will generate a healthy income. If you are prepared to invest then you should be turning over 20k+ a month, within 3 months.

I do have some money to invest, but I would prefer to a small initial investment to see what effect it would have before I take the plunge.

In regards to YouTube/blogs/Facebook - in order to drive traffic to 10's of thousands, I assume that would mean working on the website full time? That's not possible at the moment, but I will soon be leaving my day job which will give me ample time... I just don't want to waste it.

Thanks again for the responses, you are helping me and probably a lot of other newbies understand what the options are for monetizing a website

You don't have to work on the website full time, and you get one shot at making it an authority site. Holding back may mean you miss the boat if someone implements the idea and corners the market before you.

You've got the backbone in place for something which would be tremendously popular. If you don't flesh it out and take full advantage sooner rather than later, then you'll find the www is an unforgiving place, and someone will beat you to the punch.

I don't think you really understand any of the basic concepts of content, presentation, and marketing. CONTENT binds them together, and together these 3 constitute the difference between a successful site that makes good money, and another run-of-the-mill site that's neither nurtured nor making money.

As it stands, you have a distinct lack of quality content to complement what's already there. Presentation that's irrelevant because you don't have sufficient content. And marketing that's non-existent, but even if it were present you don't have anywhere near enough good content to present.

If you want some direct advice feel free to PM.

            Hi

I was intrigued by this (being in the UK) and thought I'd take a look at your site.

The one big concern I have, bearing in mind your domain name, is that of trademark. As a kind of information or 'fan site' this probably wouldn't cause you a problem, but before you start to spend a lot money on it turning it into a commercial venture, I think you should take good legal advice.

A search of the UK trademark index reveals that there are a lot of trademarks registered for the word 'shard' and obviously so...

See here: Intellectual Property Office - By number results and here: Intellectual Property Office - By number results

I'm definitely not trying to pour water on your idea but as someone who has had a number of 'run ins' regarding domains and trademarks, you just need to be careful. No point building something to get it taken off you at a later date or maybe worse...

            Good luck

I went past The Shard once. It was a spectacular building. Sadly I only had a view from a prison van.

Back on point. Do The Shard sell tickets for public viewing? If so could you not contact the ticket sellers and see if they have an affiliate program? Or ask if they can set something up so you can make money from referrals?

But as EeeTee stated, there could possibly be a trademark issue here.

My first thoughts - can you make many of those sites, one for each great building in the world

Regarding the shard site - maybe tickets, restaurant bookings (you could add live bookings code to book from your site), special events (there are lots on the shard).
