Is my % of new visitors too low?

Hello everyone,

I have a website in the Forex niche and get about 15k visitors a month, my % of new visitors compared to returning customers are really lopsided. I get about 70% return visitors and 30% new visitors.

I know having return visitors is a good thing but is still good when it is this lopsided? I feel like I need to work on getting new visitors to my site. What is your guys opinion on this?

Thanks

Umm...that's a good thing. You'll want a higher percentage of return visitors than new visitors because that's how you'll GROW. Shows that people who visit your site have a high chance of returning, and you want to switch it to have less people return? Much more profitable to have return customer/visitors than having to get someone new.

I don't want less people to return I just felt like it was odd to have so many return visitors and so few new visitors. Should I work on getting more new visitors?

Of course you should work to get new visitors. Continue to do what you're doing to maintain the return visitor % because as the old marketing maxim states: It's easier to keep a current customer than gain a new one.

Thanks not nessisarly a good thing.

If its a blog its good. (means people are interested in the content and want to read more)

If its a squeeze page its bad (people who have all ready opted in dont come back)

It is never bad to have returning visitors. If it was a website, like a squeeze page, you are right to think that it would not maintain a high rate of return visitors. This only tells you that the OP is not talking about a squeeze page or similar sales approaches using websites. However, even if you had a squeeze page with a high rate of return visitors. That is a good thing. Not a bad thing. The reason being, those who are returning are returning for a reason. There is something else offered on the website that keeps them coming back. That is another opportunity to make money from them. Having a high return rate does not diminish the amount of new visitors you get to your website, it just means you have people coming back who are obviously benefiting from coming back in some way; in which it is your job then to monetize this return traffic.

        Keep in mind,

30% new visitors and 60% returning visitors can mean:

300 new visitors and 600 returning visitors
        or
3000 new visitors and 6000 returning visitors

Just because you have a high rate of return visitors does not mean you can not have a lot of new visitors. Your return visitor rate is dependent on your new visitors. Having a high rate of return visitors means your website is doing something that keeps them coming back. This is almost always a good thing unless the traffic is coming back to harm your website; highly unlikely.

I guess my point is, you say it is not necessarily a good thing. However, your reasoning is: depending on the type of website, if it is a squeeze page, it is unlikely it would have a high rate of return. Yes you are right that it would not have a high rate of return. But then, if things like squeeze pages wouldn't have a high rate of return, they wouldn't apply to the OPs situation. The OP is in a situation where he does have a high rate of return visitors. You can't use something that doesn't apply to a situation as a reason to explain why the situation is not necessarily a good thing.

A lot of high quality material and I know what I am talking about in my niche. I have gained a large following from this and I have just started the process of monetizing it

It can cost 6 times as much to get a new visitor to convert versus a repeat visitor that's converted previously. Are you able to tell the difference between your "conversion rates of new visitors" and your "conversion rates of repeat visitors"?

Do you get a lot of traffic from social media?

Social media often sends repeat visitors.

I would take it as a very good sign ... keep doing what you're doing. You're still getting new visitors, so it's all good.

  • You can make a lot of money from returning visitors. They perceive your website as a worthy source of information.

The majority of your traffic is made up of 30% new visitors and 60% returning. What this means is, from the amount of new visitors you are receiving, a lot of them return to your website. This means the way you are driving traffic to your website is highly targeted. You are able to convert a great deal of new visitors into returning visitors.

Let's say your stats showed 40% new visitors and 50% returning visitors next month. This would mean your next month is worse than your current stats because you did not convert the same amount of new visitors into returning visitors. This means there was more new visitors coming in yet you had a lower rate of returning visitors; this can point to the type of traffic you are sending to your website (less targeted traffic) or the quality or value of what is being offered to the visitor has diminished.

So, you should try to and decrease the % of new visitors. The lower the percentage the better (if it means it is replaced with a higher percentage of returning visitors).

That is a very good thing many people in IM want there returning visitors to be far greater than there new visitors.
