Anyone used odesk before?

I'm looking for a web designer/SEO expert at the moment. I'm bit skeptical about it because anyone from around the world can apply. Anyone ever been conned ?

If you have no idea about web design/SEO, you will be very easily conned.
Odesk and similar sites have good people and bad people, like every other company that hires employee. It's up to you to figure out bad apples and boot them out.
    Few suggestions for you.
Put keyword in your post and ask them to start with that keyword when they bid. Over half of them won't since they don't read project postings, they automatically reply.
Move conversations over to Skype chat, and keep record of it (the other side can delete their responses, be aware). Odesk will always be on your side if you can prove that contractor failed to deliver what they promised. Ask for everything black and white. Never paid everything before job is finished and you can verify that is done according to original agreement. Contracts rate you as you rate them, so try to be fair and cover yourself.

Iuse it to get graphic images, banners and article wrting. But like Alan said, you'd be easily get conned. Especially in SEO area.

Try doing a search on internet - 'website optimization'. And try promoting your site by yourself.

I'm both a client, the one who hires, and a contractor, the one who works, in oDesk for 3 years now.

Indeed there are good "contractors" and bad contractors. That's how they call workers in oDesk. Looking at the brighter side of life, there are thousands upon thousands of contractors who are doing this fulltime, for a living, so you'll find professionals among them.

Here are my tips to help you weed out the applicants and get the best ones:

      1. When you post a job ask the applicants to add a keyword in their response. "When you apply put the word 'apple' in your application". Put this somewhere in the middle or the last part of your job post. Majority of the applicants don't read the job post. Others are automated applications. So this will tell you who is actually reading your post.

      2. Verify their skills. If you're looking for experienced contractors, you have several ways to verify their experience:
      a. Have a look at their oDesk profile. Experienced contractors will show a lot of login hours and a good feedback to go along with it. You can't fake experience in oDesk.
      b. You can interview them. Be considerate. Some clients use the interview process to get free consultation. That's not good. Value other people's time and they will value yours. Use the interview to gauge if you like to hire this person, not to get free advice.
      c. If you have funds to spend, hire a few at the start. Create a test contract, you need to pay them of course. The one you think you can work with at the end gets the job.

      3. Experience means more pay. Negotiate on a price that you and the contractor can work with. If you pay them very low, you won't keep them for long.

      4. Take risks. Look at it this way, to find the best contractors you as a client, also have to take risks. You can't put all the risks in the contractor's side and expect to attract the good ones. Always try to create a WIN-WIN environment and you'll find the best ones.

Last but definitely the most important, once you have hired contractors, treat them like people. Some clients think their contractors are just work machines and that's fine. But perhaps this is the best advice you can get if you'd like to do outsourcing for your business for a long time. These contractors will gain experience as they work for you, if you haven't treated them well, at the first sight of opportunity they will transfer to another client bringing all their upgraded skills with them. Thus making you go through the hiring process all over again.

      Simplified you want to:
      1. Hire the best ones that you like to work with and your budget can afford.
      2. For retention, manage them well. Or better yet, train someone to do this for you.

I hope these tips can help you. Good luck.

It doesn't matter if it has been asked a hundred times before. You're assuming he hasn't used the search function already. Maybe he has and not found the answer in those threads.

Maybe someone who would answer today and who does not know about those other threads would have advice that is different and better than answered previously.

I don't see the point in opening a thread and answering "it's been asked before." If you have nothing to contribute, such as a helpful link to one of those threads, why write anything?

I'm cnsidering using this one atm:

        https://www.odesk.com/users/~010f62233987be090d

he doesn't look like he's that experienced according to his profile but I have spoke to him over skype, sounds legit but you just never know. If anyone know any good web design/seo company on there, please let me know.

        this is what he's offering:

On the other hand, as for your SEO request. If you decide to work my team and I on this project ...we will dedicate some time to writing really great content for your site. The saying goes that you should write for people first and search engines second. This basically means we will be willing to create really quality pieces that are useful and engaging for membership prospects because the search engines will recognize our efforts.

Your future members will share your site generating additional backlinks, not to mention extra traffic, and search engines will recognize your quality piece because it will flow naturally.

In terms of pricing, around $200 monthly I can guarantee :
        (1) 5 Campaigns
        (2) 300 Keywords
        (3) 50k Crawled Pages: (Internet bot that systematically browses the World Wide Web, typically for the purpose of Web indexing.)
        (4) 15 Social Accounts to promote your company's name and website

        or

In terms of pricing, around $315 monthly I can guarantee :
        (1) 5 Campaigns
        (2) 450 Keywords
        (3) 50K Crawled Pages: (which is an Internet bot that systematically browses the World Wide Web, typically for the purpose of Web indexing.)
        (4) Includes Reports
        (5) 15 Social Accounts to promote your company's name and website

he quote a price of $390 for the website.
I have a another quote from a UK companies, £750 for the web design, and £250 per month for the SEO. So confused.

I had one awesome hire, who suddenly stopped responding to me after about a year or so (I don't think he knew how to beat the Panda) and I had to let go, and a bunch of junk hires that were just a waste of money. Still, overall well worth it.

There are various platform where you can find good SEO and Web Designer experts, some of them are odesk, elance, linkedIn. But I would prefer warrior for hire section for this.

I can't help you with your services but can vouch for oDesk and Elance. Have hired and been hired on each before without fuss.

Just be sure to only deal through the platform and not in email or take payments outside their system to avoid fees etc. If you do and there is a conflict, they won;t be able to help. Plus its a breach of the ToS.

I have been using odesk for about 2 years and have had more great workers than bad.
The trick is to have a very good brief and make sure you have that they must Att 'Your Name' in the response. If they don't do that, I dont even look at their response.
All in all a great platform to get great people around the world at fantastic rates (win/win)

I am working on Odesk since last few years and built up a good profile. The best approach is to check previous client comments and rating.Should be enough to help you.

I've used Odesk for writers. I haven't had any serious problems. Just go slowly and carefully.
