Mailing Service on a Review Site

I have been monitoring some similar sites to my own that I am creating. I noticed just recently that a review site added mail chimp to their site. Before this there was no prior mailing service. However the site is reviewing major appliances that people would only buy once a decade. $500-$2000 products. Site contains no free content and is solely reviewing 1 specific niche.

In this scenario what is the purpose of building an email list? Why would I opt in for a review site that provides no free content and will just display more reviews to me?
