What to do with capital and how to maxinimize earning potential from writing?

Hello Warrior forum, first of all let me say that I'm glad to be here. I've known about the forum for a while now and I have read some threads here before, but decided to join today.

I'm a writer and teacher. I currently live in China and I have already made great progress in accomplishing my dreams, but now I'm pushing to keep going. I've got so much more to do. I quit my horrible, dead-end, no-paying job last year and spent 8 months trying to get an online income started. I got to the point of making about $150 a month...freelance writing. In that 8 month period, I also wrote and self-published 2 eBooks on Amazon KDP. Shortly after I discovered that stuff, I left for China to be a teacher. I've also gotten some writing experience on my resume. Now I'm trying to get things started again, but hopefully to do better this time.

My goal is modest: I want to make $1000 a month online passively. I've sold about 35 eBook copies since last year. Even though it has not been much, it has encouraged me. I'm doing practically nothing with the 2 books I've written, so the fact that I'm seeing any sales is good in my eyes. I love to write and I love stories, so my far-off dream is to have my income largely come from royalties.

But while I'm building that up (working on two more eBooks currently) I want to learn how to maximize my writing earnings. I was doing freelance on sites where you make about $3 for short, 200 word articles. One could break 1K a month doing that, but I think doing that full time is probably selling oneself short. Blogging is definitely not for me! I've tried that 3 times before and I don't like it, plus the pay-off takes forever. Should I learn SEO writing? Start a website and offer services after researching the business? Should I get into copy-writing? Should I focus only on novels since that is what I love to do?

I also mentioned what to do with capital. I have approximately $20,000 that is just sitting in the banks. I think I should do something with it, make it work, but I don't know what to do. Investing it somehow. The most recent thing I looked into was buying an existing website with cash-flow and then gaining passive income that way. But it seems very risky and a site can easily cease to make money. What is the best thing I can do with my money in terms of an online business?
