How do you know that it's bad? You'r extrapolating that from a 120 click sample? And that's without even knowing:

1. What's the average price of items sold by him.
2. How he's driving traffic to the site.

Conversion rate in and by itself, without any context, means less than nothing, and it's even a dangerous value to use in discussions as it sets wrong expectations most of the time. I will gladly take my ~4% conversion rate over most Amazon Affiliates 10%+ conversion rate.

Here's just one (out of hundreds) example scenario to illustrate what I mean:

Suppose you have a site that targets very specific buying keywords. You get 100 unique visitors a day and have a whopping 20% conversion rate. Let's assume, for simplicity's sake, that each sale nets you exactly $10 in revenues. 20% conversion rate means 20 sales, which gives us $200. You now go and brag to your friends about your awesome conversion rate.

A month or two later, you post a few really good articles that attract a ton of extra traffic and attention to your website. A while later you find yourself getting 1000 unique visitors a day instead of 100 (so a 900 increase). However, most of that extra 900 is not targeted traffic, because they come to your site as a result of natural growth, not intentional targeting of specific keywords or whatever. (And if your site is good, such natural growth will almost ALWAYS happen.) Suddenly our conversion rate drops to 5%, because you no longer have that much targeted traffic so you cry yourself to sleep.

But wait a minute... 5% out of 1000 is 50 sales, which translates to $500 in revenues (assuming $10 per sale), compared to the $200 you made when your conversion rate was 20%! Holy crap, is that possible? Can conversion rate be a useless metric unless considered in the context of our website's other metrics and goals/strategies?

Social media won't generally work well for your average Amazon affiliate review site, unless you build your site with the intention of making it very "sociable" and share'able, AND/OR unless you choose a specific niche that naturally gets a lot of attention from Facebook members.

Well, yeah. I forgot to mention that this is just one way to make money with Amazon Affiliate. That is, to pick a niche with lots of products and then just write about them every day.

Pros:

• Lots of content = less likely to be flagged by Google as thin affiliate site
• You'll easily rank heaps of long tails, so you don't really have to worry about competitors outranking your main keyword since every review on your site is a main keyword, so to speak
• Very simple, you don't have to do much of keyword research or SEO. Just write and you'll see the money coming in

Cons:

• Takes effort every day (although can be outsourced, did that with positive ROI)
• You can't do this in every niche cause you'll be writing often, and who would like to write about niche that he knows nothing about?
• Not for those who don't like writing / can't follow a plan

The other way to do Amazon Affiliate is to do extensive keyword research, pick a main keyword, write some reviews and do SEO. However I've never done that since SEO and keyword research give me headache I'm just a simple guy who likes to write every day about the niche he knows. If you're like that, going the "write-every-day" route might be good choice for you, too.


But many do Amazon Affiliate with keyword research + SEO route with great success. It just wasn't never my cup of tea. So pick your poison. Both can work extremely well when you have plan and focus.

I beg to differ. Here are my earnings from this month so far based on that low "4-8% that isn't worth the time or effort": View image: asd (the numbers are of course higher than usual this month due to extra gifts people are buying for the holidays, but still the difference isn't huge)

This is from 4 websites, each between 50-100 posts. No list building.

I think people who say that Amazon isn't worth the effort simply don't have enough experience with the platform and underestimate the insane trust that Amazon carries with their visitors. For every 1 clickbank product that I sell with a 50% commission, I will sell 10 products on Amazon without even trying (by just sending the visitor to amazon and letting them do the rest).
